Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from March 27, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

paula pc:

such a nice start...
  3:08pm
Cecile:

Brian, you are for such a treat next Tuesday.
  3:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Unintelligible at any speed alright. I only wish there was more "cowboyness" to that last one...

This one meanwhile sounds like a 90s childhood of video games and commercials.
  3:17pm
adam:

I didn't hear anything naughty
  3:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ken of Newport Rich-tucky?
Mr. Mister and the Bangles!! OMG, clear my schedule!

The "Spirit in the Sky" ref must be Doctor and the Medics '86 version. I once saw that video on TV--damn that was strange.
  3:19pm
paula pc:

Brian, you don't sound like THIS type of AOR DJ, for what it's worth...
  3:19pm
still b/p:

More reverb!
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

Some mainstream rock station in '86 I assume.
Ticket call-ins where they broadcast the callers are hilarious!

BT, want this. Where find?
  3:22pm
lu:

agreed
  3:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Was it Jam Productions who did those high-pitched, very processed radio call letter jingles? In my childhood most radio stations still had those jingles.
  3:24pm
Slackel:

Lovin' it!!! This is why I listen to WFMU!
  3:25pm

I think we should attend the next WFMUZZTFC GA, when is that? :)

Hey BT, Cheri, G, paula pc, b/p, lu and other familiar and unfamiliar commenters!
  3:32pm
Cheri Pi:

Weird day, there was a shooting near our workplace, a woman took 3 bullets walking intothe local hospital. other than that; saw Jucifer last night, they were loud.
  3:32pm

Mount Carmel hasn't looked very hard, that's all.
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri: Man, what doesn't happen in Cinci? Lots of screwed up stuff seems to happen there.
  3:37pm
Cheri Pi:

They were amazing-Amber Valentine was totally channeling her inner Runhild Gammelsæter.

  3:43pm
slugluv1313:

WOW!!!!! LOVE/HATE that "Real Women" song -- such wonderfully/horribly sexist lyrics hahahaha!

Cheri Pi, that is terrible! at least the woman was going into a hospital! glad you are okay

Brian, THANK YOU for OMEGA! never heard of 'em -- being HUNGARIAN, i kinda see it as my *responsibility* to know about such things -- only Hungarian band i recall hearing anything about back then (early to mid-1970s) was Locomotive GT (i think they even showed up on one of those "late night" TV concert shows -- like "In Concert" or "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert"???)
  3:43pm
lu:

serving Löwenbräu!
  3:44pm
Cheri Pi:

I really want this new Flying Nun comp.
  3:45pm
Cecile:

me, too!
  3:46pm
Carmichael:

@lu: Well, first get on a plane and fly to Sacramento. Then drive to Midtown. Then walk in and order.
  3:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

I need to get that Flying Nun comp too! I have "In Love With These Times" which covers around 1986-88, "Pink Flying Saucers Over The Southern Alps" for 1989-91, so now I need the early early stuff!
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

King Usniewicz & His Usniewicztones -- man, he TOTALLY rules with that name! I bow in his general direction!
Avatar 3:48pm
BT:

Its a pretty solid 2LP comp.
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

King "oo-snezz" it sounded like he said..
  3:49pm
Carmichael:

This has a certain awful quality that I enjoy.
  3:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: I agree, it's probably this wonderfully awful garage sound that early punk channeled.
  3:51pm
G:

Usniewicztones, a Joe B fave last year. Hard to search for b/c it doesn't always get spelled the same on all playlists, wonder why.
  3:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: There's more Usniewicztones? I gotta check 'em out!!

  4:07pm
JDELZ:

Thanks lu. Looks like the release is NAAM, not Ga'an. Typo on the playlist? I didn't catch the beginning of the show.
  4:07pm
Cheri Pi:

Cecile-did the singer's voice get impossibly more raspy with age?
  4:08pm
Cheri Pi:

I hate this song.
  4:08pm
still b/p:

Local oldies DJ/shop owner donated 3000 records to thrift shop. If there's much of that load still there, I don't know if I have the requisite mojo-gogo for a paw-through session..
  4:08pm
lu:

HA!
  4:09pm
Cecile:

there were 2 singers, and both of them were appropriately raspy. Not more raspy - they had taken 20 years or so off. They were ridiculously tight. And the drummer has a tiny drum kit - like Phil Rudd's from AC/DC...
  4:11pm
Cheri Pi:

On my show we'll be mucking out stables for Mancini lps, fighting over copies of Bongo Madness and rinsing ourselves off in pig troughs; all the while pitting kin against kin.
  4:12pm
Cheri Pi:

Wow that sounds amazing-I hope I get to see them on this tour.

Matt from Springfield:

"For every sand castle, there is the same size hole in the ground. (Sedition Ensemble, 1981, Numbered Blues)." Pretty progressive, pretty long ago.
This was evidently cited in a paper called "Boyz N The Hood: A Colonial Analysis"...
  4:20pm
Cecile:

Glenn, I have that Meters record in one of the stills, ha, I paid $3 for it.
  4:23pm

it's a great documentary. alan zweig is truly obsessed.

dang, missed Pat Metheny. I've got a pic of his studio setup set as my computer wall paper at home. It's pretty sick.
  4:28pm

Brian, the first four albums came out on Aberrant in Australia. Suction was the first to come out here on Rough Trade America. Then RT reissued the first three. Then feedtime put out Billy on AmRep in '96.
