Listener comments!

  12:06pm
listener james from westwood:

that's one damn hip alaska station to have rerun these programs. counteracts some of the bleak mojo from that wasilla woman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Doug Schulkind:

No doubt, LJFW! Steinksi had a pal who moved up to Ala and became the program director at some station up there. Stein sent him CDs burns of his show and the rest was history.
  12:08pm
listener james from westwood:

li'l clip of tony randall from "everything you always wanted to know about sex" there. good one.
  12:10pm
ndbob:

greetings Doug, James, everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Doug Schulkind:

ndbob, great to read you!
  12:12pm
glenn:

maybe it was steinski that sent sarah over the edge. didja ever think about that, ljfw? huh? didja?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Doug Schulkind:

Then Steinski is not only a badass, he is a patriot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Doug Schulkind:

When I was just a little tike taking drum lessons, I studied from a Sam Ulano lesson book!
  12:23pm
ndbob:

wow Doug - my times of musical lessons were short and painful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Doug Schulkind:

I believe Mr. Ulano was rather short, too.
  12:26pm
dc pat:

I took drum lessons but figured everything else out on my own. Figured out guitar by watching Pete Townshend's fingers.
  12:29pm
still b/p:

Elderly woman gave me piano lessons from standard books when I was eight...although a Beatles collection eventually was included! Hated to practice, but would sound out various one-finger tunes of the moment on my own -- the Green Beret song, Rat Patrol theme, etc.
  12:29pm
glenn:

i think all musicians, no matter what they play, should take drum lessons.
  12:30pm
dc pat:

totally agree glenn! don't know how many guitar players I played with that had no rhythm at all.
  12:31pm
trsh:

I think I lucked out with a pile of music through public elementary school.
  12:31pm
dc pat:

streaming Bryce at the same time. Sounds killer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Bryce:

Me too! (OK, this isn't Bryce.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Doug Schulkind:

My daughter has viola teacher who comes to the house weekly. I would have given my right arm to have had a music teacher like him. Maybe both arms.
  12:35pm
listener james from westwood:

that would have made for some interesting bow technique.
  12:36pm
dc pat:

that was Mozart's instrument, viola. his dad made him cut it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Urine:

Discharge? Discharge!
  12:38pm
listener james from westwood:

that "ba-bumblebee" has "loop" written all over it.

Saturday: typed a shitload today.
Sunday: typed a shitload today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Doug Schulkind:

Too bad Rev. Shields didn't live into the age of Twitter (he died in 2007).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Doug Schulkind:

Door jamb temperature? DOOR JAMB TEMPERATURE? That is fucking deep.
  12:43pm

wonder if his stuff is archived anywhere.
  12:45pm
listener james from westwood:

i know david isay's still kicking; he's one of the folks behind npr's storycorps. still inviting folks to share their lives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Doug Schulkind:

I say Isay is a radio hero.
  12:47pm
glenn:

i have probably hung five thousand doors in my life, and i guarantee you that the words door jamb temperature have never once passed my lips. not in that order, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Doug Schulkind:

Jesus, Glenn, 5,000 doors? That's a lotta doors.
  12:50pm
glenn:

you bet. i started my apprenticeship at 19, i'm 51 now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

I put up a screen door last year. Where's my medal?
  12:52pm
Van in DC:

Huh. Made the end anyway.
  12:53pm
glenn:

the average 3 bedroom house probably has 25 doors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Doug Schulkind:

And the average 25-bedroom house has....

C'mon you math nuts!
  12:56pm
ndbob:

209? .. equal to the number of years it would take me to put up a door
  12:56pm
glenn:

by the way, if anybody has any carpentry / construction / renovation questions, i am more than happy to answer them.
  12:57pm
glenn:

don't worry ndbob, it is way more difficult than people think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Doug Schulkind:

Nice Glenn!
  12:59pm
dc pat:

I designed, built, and installed a screen door specifically so it would close with a loud thwack just like the one on my parent's garage when I was growing up. Shining moment of my life.
  12:59pm
dc pat:

Nurse With Wound + Laura Nyro and Labelle = ???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm

dc pat, I've missed you!

Whenever I get tools in my hand there will be errors, cussing and blood.
  1:01pm
dc pat:

measure twice, cut 12 times...
  1:01pm
glenn:

i built a cottage for a VERY wealthy woman some years ago. she wanted that same screen door thunk that she remembered from her childhood. it went beyond obsession, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Doug Schulkind:

Errors, Cussing and Blood. Sounds like a Coen Brothers movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Doug Schulkind:

Errors, Cussing and Blood. Sounds like a Coen Brothers movie.
  1:03pm
dc pat:

glenn: another example of how important sound is to us. a thwack to me is like the orange to Proust.
  1:03pm
ndbob:

thanks for running this Doug!
  1:03pm
glenn:

the secret is, measure as little as possible. hold things where they are to go, and mark them to size.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Doug Schulkind:

Always my pleasure, ndbob. Thanks for hanging with it/me.
  1:05pm
dc pat:

good advice there. I always have trouble making things square. mostly because things like the door frame aren't square in the first place.
  1:06pm
trsh:

Great pair of shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Doug Schulkind:

You can still email Steinski any time. He's a wunnerful feller.
  1:07pm
glenn:

pythagorean theorum is your friend.
  1:07pm
listener james from westwood:

these shows are a national treasure. thanks, doug and steinski, wherever you are!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Doug Schulkind:

My feelings EXACTLY, Listener James.
  7:08pm
Parq:

On the archives (as usual). More than a little surpirsed to see that no one during the broadcast answered Steinski's implicit question about Jack Sheldon. He was one of the key voices of Schoolhouse Rock, lead singer on "Conjunction Junction", "The Ballad of Mister Morton" and many more. Thanks for running this, Doug.
