Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Happy Valentine's Day, BT and all!

  3:13pm Ron Paul:

All speed limits eliminated on day one.
  3:16pm kenny:

Slay the beast!
  3:16pm BSI:

I demand a full show of tunes involving palindromes. I will not be denied.
  3:17pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

that's a theme that would probably stump even Megan!
  3:18pm bill:

BSI, you're soaking in it
  3:18pm efd:

Three hours of artists named Otto...
  3:19pm jmr3:

i think brian's running late, but he's almost there
  3:19pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

that's more Bryce's territory
  3:19pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

White Load is probably the best band name ever
  3:20pm still b/p:

Couldn't even play CDs -- each would have to be a DVD.
  3:21pm SteveL:

They don't sound like nice boys.
  3:21pm bill:

You could just put on Satan Oscillate My Metallic Sonatas and go out for lunch
  3:22pm paula pc:

BT i was needing the Rock and you are bringing it
  3:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, Wayne's World III b/w Godfather IV!

The show "The Critic" with Jon Lovitz always reviewed terrible movies that were the next sequel after the most recent real movie!
  3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

This sounds like a Doors pastiche by way of those WWF novelty records in the 80s...
  3:27pm bill:

Alien V - Miley Cyrus tricks alien into jumping into a volcano on the Spring Break planet
  3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@paula On Tuesday afternoons, BT never leaves you wanting.
  3:28pm Mark in VT:

I am wearing the BT nasty t-shirt. Anyone else?
  3:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@bill: OMG that is EXACTLY the kind of parodies they featured! You've got the feel, buddy!
  3:29pm paula pc:

@ Matt f S -- YES EXACTLY
  3:31pm bill:

MfS: awright! (terrorist fist jab)
  3:33pm Matt from Springfield:

(insurgent knuckle thrush back)
  3:34pm Matt from Springfield:

"thrust", sorry.
  3:36pm Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of Valentine's Day and sets with the same song, check out (later) this morning's Dark Night of the Soul with Julie. She played 18, ONE-EIGHT, different versions of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"--16 in the same set! Magnificent! Truly epic!
  3:37pm High Five:

  3:37pm still b/p:

Totie Totie Totie!
  3:37pm PubMed Health:

@MfS Good call. Thrush appears as whitish, velvety sores in the mouth and on the tongue. Underneath the whitish material, there is red tissue that may bleed easily. Happy Valentines Day!
  3:38pm Tom G:

Grong Grong! Great record. Hey BT.
3:38pm Dated High Five with Mullet:

  3:38pm Mike East:

I have a group of kids playing loud pop punk in the nearest studio. help me!
  3:39pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

  3:40pm bill:

Mike: please look in on them and make sure they have adequate ear protection
  3:40pm Matt from Springfield:

@PubMed: Wow, you're right! Never heard of thrush used as sores, I was just thinking of the birds. Mouth sores would be decidedly unromantic.

Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day to you as well!
  3:41pm Totie Fields:

Why is everybody laughing? My life sucks!
  3:41pm BSI:

Mike: There's a reason the good lord gave us the Molitov Cocktail and a good pair of running shoes.
  3:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Rescue Mike! Play the most hardcore and/or vocally disturbing punk you have on hand! Mike can blast them to shreds! (Or, turn them on to good stuff--a win-win either way!)
  3:42pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

Matt, think of it from herpes point of view--mouth sores are the IDEAL way to spend VD.
  3:43pm Mike East:

I think its too late to save their ears - clearly they're hard of hearing if they think that garbage sounds good.
  3:43pm jmr3:

@ pubmed - and here I was thinking I was the ony medical librarian listening right now
3:43pm failed Valentine's Day ad campaign:

@DCE: "VD, is for everybody..."
  3:44pm Mark in VT:

Mike East-

Is it what I often call Mountain Dew punk? If so just buy them some energy drinks and tell their moms they were being loud.
  3:44pm bill:

0u+5+anding set BT!
  3:44pm Van in DC:

Somehow, for some reason, I think that love will tear us apart.
  3:45pm V-Day:

Remember, the VD you take = the V-day you make.
  3:45pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

eh, they're just kids, anyway. they could be doing suburban gangsta rap mixed with metallic guitars...eeeeeshhh..
  3:48pm still b/p:

That's a movie that's out right now, innit? Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close & Irredeemably Limited?
  3:48pm Mark in VT:

what about the William Shatner version of radar love?
  3:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@Van: I've been hearing that myself lately, I think it's true :)
  3:50pm Matt from Springfield:

@b/p: Good title for a WFMU premium!
  3:52pm Mike East:

@Mark in VT - I've never heard that - but yeah, I think it could be considered Mt. Dew punk. Thanks for the distraction, BT.
  3:55pm BSI:

Spooky. I woke up with a Sparks earworm this morning (amateur hour) -- haven't heard anything by them in ages... GET OUT OF MY HEAD!
  3:58pm Cage:

Any Noise fans here? Check this out ...Former WFMU DJ/Engineer, Dan Andreana's group, DaDa Frolic ... http://orangepunch.com/df-trailer
They have a gig at The Stone next Tuesday night.
  4:01pm Mark in VT:

Who is Jimmy Campbell? Kids today. Yes it is.
  4:04pm bill:

Mark, I don't think those were kids of today
  4:06pm detsorg sekalf:

Translation: "I am a musician"
  4:09pm Matt from Springfield:

  4:11pm R I S K Y:

  4:11pm grosted flakes:

  4:12pm grosted flakes:

  4:12pm Mark in VT:

a local goat farm here near me is getting ready to kid. That is what they call it when it is time for baby goats. Kidding.
  4:12pm bill:

MfS: Do you happen to be in show biz?
  4:13pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

so, Mark, I can't tell if you're serious.
  4:13pm Matt from Springfield:

Aaron Dilloway, always awesome stuff!
  4:15pm still b/p:

IS that Osmonds Crazy Horses folded in there, eh?
  4:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@bill: No, I'm a geographer working more the technical side. I just have a very broad range of interests in the arts and sciences, and I remember all sorts of stuff.
  4:18pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

no kidding on VH, huh.
  4:18pm chris:

Some things never change, it seems...
  4:19pm glenn:

van halen, how do i hate thee.
  4:19pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

count the ways, glenn!
  4:20pm JT:

i like pre-1984 VH, and i liked that.
  4:21pm bill:

MfS: stuff, like German?
  4:24pm Mark in VT:

Used to play a Van Halen drinking game years ago. every time David Lee Roth yelled out a "waaaoooooo!!" you would take a drink. Which meant that you would just about constantly be taking a sip.
  4:24pm bill:

DLR does remind me of Totie Fields
  4:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@bill: Nein! Ich bin einen Deutschsprecher. Ich habe Deutsch für vier Jahren im Gymnasium gelernt. Ich weisse noch ein bisschen...
  4:26pm jt:

First time I ever got properly drunk I was listening to Van Halen and hardcore.
  4:26pm Matt from Springfield:

@bill: At least I still know enough to be a volunteer "consultant" on the comment boards!
  4:27pm jljl:

Damn, Ich wüsche dass mein Deutsch so gut war, or something like that.
  4:29pm bill:

It’s a half past four and I’m shiftin gear
  4:29pm jmr3:

yeah, me too Matt
  4:31pm Mark in VT:

I vividly remember being picked up at the mall by my dad when I was about 12 years old. I just bought the just out Van Halen 1984 cassette. I got into the truck and ripped open the cellophane and could not wait to pop it in and play it. My dad said hmmm.
  4:31pm Matt from Springfield:

@jmr3: Sehr gut! Zusammen, sind wir die WFMU-Deutsch-Polizei! ;)
  4:31pm Mike East:

This day is flying...unfortunately I'm still here for another 7 hours. Atleast the Mt. Dew punks will be out of here in a half hour.
  4:31pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

hey guys, talk American!
  4:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Good afternoon, American customer. Would you like to try our pork rinds value meal?
  4:33pm bill:

MfS: Was ist los mit der Strandpromenade Reich reference?
  4:36pm Matt from Springfield:

@bill: Well it's just a translation of "Boardwalk Empire" (based on that fragment of 20s-ish German singing in one of those pieces). I bet in Germany they just call it "Boardwalk Empire" like we do.
  4:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, Alex Chilton's voice sounds between the Box Tops and Big Star! He was chronologically between them as well.
  4:41pm Mark in VT:

How do you say a David Lee Roth "waaaaoooow!!!" in German?
  4:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mark: Well I was into "1984" at one time as well. It's an intro into classic rock, and those with good tastes soon move beyond it.

Oh yeah, to answer your question: "Vaaouuuuuu!!!"
  4:43pm bill:

  4:43pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

these are both good answers.
  4:46pm hubba:

Who are the White Stains? This sounds good.
Avatar 4:47pm BT:

www.youtube.com... courtesy of my pal JW
  4:47pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'm guessing it's somehow related to the White Load earlier...
  4:48pm Matt from Springfield:

Brian's played White Stains before, they're great. (It's not a name you easily forget...)
  4:49pm hubba:

Thanks for the link BT!
  4:50pm Mark in VT:

Funny how we now think of Van Halen as "classic rock" when at the time I remember die hard rockers talking about Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and the like being "true" metal and such. It is really weird to be thinking back on this when Van Halen was a new what would be considered today as a pop band.
Avatar 4:50pm BT:

  4:57pm Mark in VT:

I remember as a young 11/12 y/o some who I looked up to as "stoners" probably late teens or early twenties really criticizing Metallica. I remember I bought the Kill Em All tape and these guys saying it was shit.
  4:59pm glenn:

classic rock = oldies radio.
  5:00pm ?:

@Matt: Hast du gehört die Nachrichten über die Joy Division/New Order Bänder?
  5:01pm bill:

Mark, what were they into, I'm guessing Skynyrd
  5:02pm Caryn:

That's what happens when you concentrate on getting your German right... you forget your frigging name.
  5:02pm Matt from Springfield:

@?: Nein, was ist mit Joy Division/New Order passieren?
  5:02pm Caryn:

@Matt: http://www.nme.com/news/joy-division/62037
  5:04pm Caryn:

I particularly like the guns and the £1.1 in gold and jewelry found with the masters. Makes it all seem cooler somehow... (Even if the valuables were left there from a bank.)
  5:04pm bill:

There's stridulation on the Flash stream
  5:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow! Nice find, thanks Jamie Oliver!

And make sure you check out all the versions of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on Julie's show today!
  5:05pm Mark in VT:

I guess I am feeling old now. Because I remember when Metallica just came out, U2 was still a religious christian band, you could use the Atarii joy stick rubber piece that came off to threaten sodomy on an annoying friend, and Reagan was both the worst and best president for some reason.
  5:06pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Legend of the Hidden Master Tapes! Hordes of treasure: guns, gold, and glum! :)
  5:07pm Joe:

Wow Mark in VT that is the best short form discription of that time period I have ever read. Spot On.
  5:10pm Caryn:

@Matt: I just like the implication that someone thought the masters were so valuable, they should be kept in a bank vault. Better than the "Wicker Man" reels that were infamously used as road building material...
@Mark: oh, those were the days. Atari remains the only gaming system that I've consistently kicked other people's butts on. These newfangled games aren't for me.
  5:16pm Mark in VT:

I remember going to a friend's house back in the day. Back in the day! that is what oldsters say! We went to play Atari and one of the sticks was just the white plastic part without the rubber part that goes over it. The mom was yelling to the boy to get his room clean. We saw the rubber piece next to his bed and it was glazed over like it was greased up like vasoline. Don't know if he was doing THAT with it to this day.
  5:17pm Matt from Springfield:

"Desdemona"!! Love this one! Golden Artyfact!
  5:17pm bill:

Mark, thanks for sharing
  5:20pm hubba:

I'm so stoked on that new Dan Melchor... can't wait for the garage enthusiasts to go, "WTF?"
5:20pm The rubber part that goes over it:

Oh he was. THAT.
Avatar 5:22pm BT:

I think they've been saying that for a while....
  5:26pm hubba:

true dat... the Catbirds and Cardinals album was a nice segue...
  5:28pm hubba:

Although, I did not hear the Assembalge Blues album
  5:28pm Matt from Springfield:

"I'm Bleeding Now - whoa oh oh - more than words can say, I'm bleeding n---" (collapses)
  5:31pm Mark in VT:

Back in the day. I remember when the Beastie Boys came out and there were "skater punks" that would steal VW symbols from cars. I remember seeing some serious bloody fights involving classic stoners and these. Then it was evolving the heavy metal head shit.
  5:31pm Joe:

Mark I have come to the conclusion that you know your old when put the word The in front of the strangest things. Such as the The Pandora or The Google or The You Tube The Facebook.
  5:32pm Mark in VT:

  5:34pm bill:

  5:36pm Caryn:

  5:38pm glenn:

  5:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Yeah!! Liquify our brains!!!
  5:45pm hubba:

Show was a life saver today, thanks BT, and all good folk, take it easy.
  5:50pm bill:

This reminds me, The Darkness is making a comeback. Yay!
  5:55pm northguineahills:

Nice set as always!
  5:55pm jeff-m:
