Talkin Megaupload w/ Casey Rae-Hunter (Future of Music Coalition)

Universal Music couldn't have been too happy when some of their top artists appeared in a strange music video endorsing so-called "rogue" filesharing website Megaupload. Now, led by controversial outspoken Megaporn founder Kim 'Dotcom', Megaupload is suing Universal, claiming they abused the DMCA to censor the video on YouTube. Meanwhile, some of the artists who appear in the video -- including Will.i.am and P Diddy -- are saying they didn't give permission for the endorsement. What the heck is going on? Casey Rae-Hunter from the Future of Music Coalition calls in to help us understand this ridiculous situation.

Listener comments!

  9:03am earwax:

Perfect segue from Megan's show
  9:03am Cheri Pi:

G'Morning Jason & all listeners!
  9:04am Cheri Pi:

Did you and Megan plan that segue??
  9:05am glenn:

especially if you were reading the comments.
  9:07am Aaron in Jcity:

nice set this morning J
  9:07am Dead Corporate Eyes:

I missed the segue, and can only assume it was as awesome as it's made out to be. Good morning!
  9:07am pierre:

Hello Bonjour Jason,
Bonjour and Hello listeners.

If Meghan next theme is "cheap" this show would still fits perfectly. ^^
  9:07am mill creek:

I'm sorry I have to go out in 10 minutes...it's a fab vibe
  9:09am jason:

hey everybody! ah, a transition from a talk themed Underwater Theme Park into the show that is ALWAYS talk themed! Welcome!
  9:11am mill creek:

I like a band that has no title and no album
  9:13am mill creek:

I also like bands that suddenly have them
  9:14am jason:

hey, we're not automatons here
  9:15am anne:

hey hey Jason! how goes it?
  9:16am bw:

Good afternoon Jason! From dreary Lyon
  9:16am Dave B:

woo hoo!
  9:16am postmanpaul:

Merry Christmas Jason, Officionados and City Slackers xxx
  9:17am glenn:

so this baby seal walks into a club...... (sort of).http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/baby-seal-breaks-into-a-house-and-sleeps-on-the-co
  9:19am Dave B:

@glenn - "walks into a club" - ha ha!

  9:26am BSI:

waah! Another Bognor Regis reference in a track title!
  9:27am Dead Corporate Eyes:

my nyquil nights are spilling over into the mornings...me need awake
  9:28am postmanpaul:

Bognor Regis is an ugly cheesy Seaside town approx 20 miles west of Brighton which is not ugly and cheesy.
  9:29am hamburger:

  9:29am BSI:

PMP: correct, but it's got one of the top three coolest place-names on earth!
  9:30am glenn:

is dildo, newfoundland on that list?
  9:31am Tom G:

i hadn';t heard this megaupload yet!

hey hey DJ
  9:35am Cheri Pi:

Shoot! I go to the microwave and miss the terrible song!! What was it like?
  9:37am postmanpaul:

That's just plain ridiculous glen. I was not aware that Bognor's name fame existed outside of the UK, BSI.
  9:38am glenn:

it made lulu sound good.
  9:38am postmanpaul:

Indifferent crap, CP
  9:39am glenn:

canada has some great place names. many in the west, for some reason. my favourite is head-smashed-in-buffalo-jump.
  9:40am Parq:

"Hacker-poseur" sounds like a town in the midwest. "I live in Chicago, but I hail from good old Hackerposer Indiana!"
  9:40am BSI:

@PMP: saw it on a map when visiting some friends in South London. Once that name is seen, it cannot be unseen.
  9:42am Dave B:

@Cheri Pi -

About 2/3 down the page...
  9:42am Cheri Pi:

Thanks Glenn-I get the idea. Somewhat surprised Lulu wasn't asked to be part of it...just to piss of the "tallicas.
  9:45am earwax:

  9:45am Cheri Pi:

Dave B-I can't download anything at work-I'll have to check it out in the archives. Unless.....JASON PLAYS IT AGAIN!!
  9:46am Andrea on the M62:

Hi all, what is the interude music you/Jason speaks over? Where is it from? It was in my dream the other night
  9:47am bw:

I'm going to make that song my ringtone
  9:47am Cecile:

Jason, liked your article on Megaupload.
I don't want to, but I sometimes have to visit those sites when an out of print thing I'm looking for isn't anywhere else to be found.
  9:49am Dave B:

@Andrea - I asked Jason that very question some years back. If memory serves me right, its a Faust riff, who's name escapes me at the moment
  9:50am Arthur Sultan:

Very special place, Bognor Regis....
  9:51am jason:

Dave, you're right! Andrea, it's a loop of Faust "Just a Second (Starts Like That)" off Faust IV
  9:52am jason:

thanks Cecile! It really seems like Megaupload cleaned up their act to prepare for the 3million dollar viral video campaign...

we should do one of those for WFMU, right? Who would be in WFMU's Mega Video?
  9:53am Cecile:

Patton Oswalt, Syl Johnson, Kristin Schaal, Eugene Mirman, Genesis P-Orridge, and maybe Tonetta!
  9:54am bw:

wow that's a video!
  9:54am glenn:

r. stevie moore, amanda, wing.
  9:54am Dave B:

That would KILL!
  9:54am Cecile:

ooooh. Tonetta would be great.
  9:55am Cecile:

Also that dude from the Mob could narrate it. I told Diane he could sell fire to the Human Torch.
  9:55am Cheri Pi:

Tonetta, Big Freedia, Loutallica
  9:55am glenn:

and yo la tengo, of course.
  9:55am Cheri Pi:

  9:55am Cecile:

More: Tesco Vee, Thurston Moore, Yoko Ono, Michael Yonkers, Paul Metzger, the Smithereens, dude from Neubaten.
  9:56am Dave B:

  9:56am Cecile:

this needs to happen, I think.
  9:57am Cecile:

Scharpling could direct it. He would have enough material for two years of shows.
  9:58am Cheri Pi:

Daniel Johnson, Barrence, Varg, the Lame Drivers
  9:58am Dave B:

Get LuLu Reed to narrate, then auto-tune the hell out of it.
  9:59am Dave B:

Trademark G from Evolution Control Committee...
  9:59am Cheri Pi:

Cecile and I will get the legal team back together.
  9:59am glenn:

and bsi.
  9:59am Cecile:

with a special guest appearance by Schwartze Piet!
  10:00am Dave B:

  10:00am Cheri Pi:

If we don't do this as a video, it would make a hell of a "we are the world"
  10:02am still b/p:

With tasteful compositing/special effects to include cameos by Moondog and Sun Ra in fresh clips.
  10:02am BSI:

@Glenn... HAH! I'll just be the creepy guy in the rabbit suit in the background, menacing invisible fireflies...
  10:02am Cecile:

and Captain Beefheart.
  10:03am fishmonkeystew:

Sonic Youth, U.S. Girls. And Kenny G, of course!
  10:04am BSI:

..........and Olive.
  10:04am glenn:

the world needs more creepy guys in rabbit suits.
  10:04am Cecile:

they could do it for fundraiser.
  10:04am Cheri Pi:

GG Allin- I'm a big fan of postmortem cameos & live/dead duets.
Also...Blag Dahlia, Nina Hagen, Lee Scratch Perry.
  10:06am glenn:

florence foster jenkins.
  10:06am Cheri Pi:

  10:07am glenn:

  10:07am fishmonkeystew:

Lux Interior!

Caetano veloso
  10:12am Cheri Pi:

Edward Joseph Mahoney
  10:13am BSI:

  10:14am PKNY:

This Univeria Zekt is nice, thanks for playing!
  10:16am Cheri Pi:

Univeria Zekt =top notch
  10:17am glenn:

  10:53am Dead Corporate Eyes:

this is catching my ear, and dragging the left side of my brain through paradise
  10:53am Cheri Pi:

HEY Jason-It's the 220th anniversary of the Bill of Rights! What's your favorite amendment? Mine is the 1st (freedom of speech)-like this board.
  10:54am Cecile:

me, too, Cheri.

Hey, am I the only person excited that both Anthony Hamilton and Rammstein have new albums out?
  10:55am ?:

whoa, definitely freedom of speech!

Long Live The Free Speech Comments Board!

What do you mean excited about Rammstein?
  10:56am jason:

that was me!
  10:57am Carmichael:

Hi Jason, good morning musical Argonauts.
  10:59am Cecile:

Both Anthony Hamilton, and Rammstein (not together) have new albums out after a long wait. I'm excited to hear them both. Am I the only one?
  11:03am Cheri Pi:

We should definitely give the $3 mill to Jingle Dogs
  11:04am Parq:

Sadly, we are coming closer to a literal fulfilment of the Clash line, "You have the right to free speech -- provided, or course, you're not dumb enough to actually try it."
  11:05am Parq:

And whlle we're at it, let's get Joe Strummer to endorse the FMA -- for that kind of money, bringing back the dead should be feasable.
  11:06am Cecile:

They are two guys who actually formed tiny nations. It's pretty funny.
  11:10am Cheri Pi:

The Bill: http://todaysdocument.tumblr.com/post/14263162555/congressarchives-as-you-can-imagine-we-make-a
  11:10am earwax:

Bill of Rights - void where inconvenient
  11:17am jason:

hehe great idea Parq
  11:21am Dead Corporate Eyes:

this doesn't sound like any of the Puerto Ricans I know
  11:43am BSI:

This doesn't sound like any of the wiild things I know.
  11:45am Cheri Pi:

That sounded like the sound track that plays in my head 24/7
  11:59am Dead Corporate Eyes:

thanks Jason, see you next time!
  11:59am glenn:

i always feel like i need to apologize for not liking the jam.
  11:59am Parq:

God, there's still nobody like the Jam.
  12:00pm Parq:

(sorry, Glenn)
  12:00pm glenn:

hey, whaddya gonna do?
  12:01pm TS:

Great show!
