Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. In that spirit, I invite you to turn of the air conditioning, throw open the windows, and get ready to sweat! I'm busting out the 7" AND 12" vinyl and spinning your favorite classic jams, along with some little-heard gems that will make you move your feet to the beat in the heat. Guaranteed at least one "I haven't heard this in 30 years" or "why haven't I heard this before?!" moment for every listener! The string sections and hi-hats are at the ready - let's groove tonight!

*Some songs may strike you as more hip-hop, or some other genre, as opposed to strictly "disco." I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" as a catch-all for fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s.

Did she EVER do anything else? I think I actually have the LP somewhere
  Wed. 8/10/11 9:56pm G:

@Julie: Do the Hustle was an important moment in popularizing it widely. You couldn't escape that song in the summer of 75.
  Wed. 8/10/11 9:57pm Julie:

and BASS man there's so much BASS @G yeah I was thinking 75ish was about right, although the word discotheque goes back farther. And when did it actually become hetero & mainstream?
  Wed. 8/10/11 9:57pm cubicle carl:

Oh my. This is freaking me out. I feel like I'm riding around in the car with my mommy with the radio on.
Wed. 8/10/11 9:58pm Randy in NC:

@efd: I was just thinking one show isn't going to be enough lol You defintely will need to do another.

Request: 2 Puerto Ricans, a Blackman, and a Dominican
  Wed. 8/10/11 9:59pm annoid:

anyone know how to shut down the WFMU app on a Droid? Usually it's the lower right button on apps, but that's not doin' nuttin' - I just had to go into applications and do a Force Stop. There's gotta be another way.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:00pm Justsheano:

Oh man, how many crappy cookouts on the side of the Belt Parkway near Canarsie Pier had this as a soundtrack?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:00pm Julie:

when she was 12, Alicia had her own radio show!
Wed. 8/10/11 10:00pm Randy in NC:

Probably want steer clear of Celebration...

OK, I'll stop
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:00pm Julie:

@Annoid what I usually do is just put it on pause and it goes away
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:01pm timotato:

Love the bass & rhythm of "Forgrt Me Not"
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:01pm annoid:

Great show, by the way! I was out walking around and the WFMU app on my phone decided to spontaneously launch. Suddenly, my pocket started playing "Ring My Bell." Quite surreal.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:02pm G:

Between Hustle and Saturday Night Fever (1975-77) disco went from speciality club music (early 70s) to a dominant mainstream genre. Pre 75, it was a speciality in clubs among blacks, latinos, and gays, partly a rebellion against then-dominent male-hetero rock with its anti-dance anti-pop leanings....
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:02pm annoid:

Thanks Julie!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:02pm Julie:

ah so what's some of that specialty club music pre 1975?
Wed. 8/10/11 10:03pm Randy in NC:

@timotato - This stuff is from back in the day when people actually played their instruments rather than assembling everything on a lap top from samples.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:04pm Joe B:

disco was already big business pre Saturday Night fever. that's how/why that movie got made
Wed. 8/10/11 10:05pm Randy in NC:

Does anyone remember Huckapoo shirts?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:05pm efd:

Hi Madi, nice to see you! Nice to see all of you, of course! Thanks for boogieing along G, annoid, timotato, Justsheano (request coming up!), T-Zero, cubicle carl, and anyone I missed (Sorry!)
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:05pm Julie:

@JoeB exactly..the movie kind of signalled the end of its being "cool"
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:05pm G:

wikipedia: "In what is considered a forerunner to disco style clubs, in February 1970, the New York City DJ David Mancuso opened The Loft, a members-only private dance club set in his own home. Allmusic claims some have argued that Isaac Hayes and Barry White were playing what would be called disco music as early as 1971. According to the music guide there is disagreement as to what the first disco song was. Claims have been made for Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (1972), Jerry Butler's "One Night Affair" (1972), the Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat" (1974), George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby" (1974), and "Kung Fu Fighting" (1974) by Biddu and Carl Douglas. The first article about disco was written in September 1973 by Vince Aletti for Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1974 New York City's WPIX-FM premiered the first disco radio show.""
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:06pm Julie:

Will there be some KC & The Sunshine Band?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:06pm Julie:

When I think of disco I think of Johnny Fever's massive hatred of it, and his five minutes as host of a disco tv show :D
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:06pm efd:

There will!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:07pm efd:

yikes, I'm already starting to feel overcommitted with 2 hours left!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:08pm Julie:

You can do it Evan! In the 70s, that's what cocaine was for! More disco!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:08pm T-Zero:

@eft; Heh. Not to say I told you so, but I said so. lol Disco defintely gets a bad rap
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:09pm T-Zero:

efd ... damn typos
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:10pm efd:

I am feeling rather newt-like. :) Yep, T-Zero, you're correct on all counts.

JUSTSHEANO, your request is next on WFMU!

I saw Airplane this week, nice disco scene in that....oooooh love the echo EFD you are my idol
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:17pm cubicle carl:

@Randy in NC - the designs on those were absurd. I had one that was a picture of mountain climbers ascending some sort of iceberg looking thing.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:17pm annoid:

Bless you EFD! Keep bringin' the happy over here in the corporate computer slog bog....
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:18pm efd:

zoot allors, I DO have that Rosebud 12" Did you hear me play it a few years ago? Anyway, I'lll see if I can get that on for you.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:18pm Justsheano:

Thanks, Evan! I am so happy! I first learned that song when I was in day camp in the second grade... and it sticks with me to this day
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:18pm Julie:

I love how so many of these are 7". Did the 12" single exist before disco?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:19pm efd:

Awesome, my pleasure Justsheano!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:19pm Canadian Dude:

  Wed. 8/10/11 10:20pm Amanda:

Awww, I have this 12"! I grabbed it off the street once when someone was throwing out a whole bunch of stuff. Also in the haul was... wait for it... Double Dutch Bus.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:20pm G:

wikipedia: "The 12-inch single gramophone record came into existence with the advent of disco music in the 1970s. The first 12" (30 cm) single was actually a 10" (25 cm) acetate used by a mix engineer (Jose Rodriquez) in need of a Friday night test copy for famed disco mixer Tom Moulton. "
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:20pm T-Zero:

@efd: You have any disco rough on hand? (ie, Alan Bega Juke Box Babe, Material, Mathematiques Modernes, Elli & Jaccno)?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:20pm Julie:

AMANDA!!!! are you dancin'?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:21pm Bohannon:

Wardell Piper _ Super Sweet ... so forgotten.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:21pm Julie:

Um how can the first 12" single be a "10?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:22pm efd:

Bohannon, I've played that before! But I don't have it with me tonight. :(
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:22pm Amanda:

Yes! If by dancing you mean sitting on the couch with my notebook!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:22pm efd:

T-Zero, that's a sub-genre I'm not familiar with! I think it'll just be smooth disco tonight.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:23pm Auld:

I think there was a brief window of 4-track tapes before the 8-track came into being.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:23pm efd:

well, Material I know but I don't think of them as disco-y.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:23pm Julie:

@Amanda yes I am couch-dancing as well!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:23pm lagirlfrench:

'Le freak c'est chic' on the playlist? Or the Italian Pino d'Angio 'ma quale que idea'? :)
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:23pm G:

Because shifts operate by steps. That's my experience with processes, anyway. Does that sound right to you? For more detail, check the rest of the "12 inch single" article in wikipedia. Only small bites can go here.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:24pm Julie:

Is there German disco? I want German disco!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:24pm lagirlfrench:

I want French disco!!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:24pm efd:

Oh, there's plenty of good German disco! But not tonight.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:25pm cheri:

hey what's shaking evan??? i ddc am grooving to this awsome disco show!!!! hiya julie!!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:26pm Julie:

late though it is, this Janet sure has a disco beat
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:27pm T-Zero:

@efd: re Material ... Upriver and Secret Life would probably qualify as disco rough. Wouldn't a lot of the German disco fall into disco rough? (This is the problem with style classification, it's not logically consistent.)
Wed. 8/10/11 10:27pm Denny Terrio Jr.:

Who's the guy who instigated the record burning at Wrigley Field?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:28pm Kat:

@Denny Steve Dahl.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:28pm Julie:

there were so many disco novelty songs..disco Lucy among them
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:28pm G:

"July 12, 1979 became known as "the day disco died" because of an anti-disco demonstration that was held in Chicago. Rock station DJs Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, along with Michael Veeck, son of Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck, staged Disco Demolition Night, a promotional event with an anti-disco theme, between games at a White Sox doubleheader for disgruntled rock fans."
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:29pm Julie:

Going to google disco rough...funny I thought you said NICO..disco Nico now that'd be something
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:29pm cubicle carl:

Is that a light saber in your pocket...
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:30pm T-Zero:

heh, I thought he said Nico also and was going huh?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:30pm cheri:

evan & julie what's a disco show without the bee gees???
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:32pm Ace:

I Was Made For Lovin' You Baby ............... KISS
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:34pm glenn:

i'm not sure if it's considered disco, but it's definitely dance music, anyway, i hereby request......... gina x.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:34pm G:

wow, more than half over, time flies etc....
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:34pm Gil Gerard:

I look at this as exposure therapy
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:34pm efd:

cheri, this might actually be the week where I fulfill one of your requests.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:35pm efd:

Also, if this Sister Power song isn't the biggest rip-off of "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston I don't know what is...
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:35pm G:

circle the calendar!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:36pm Gil Gerard:

yes, they totally ripped off the beat
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:36pm cheri:

thank you evan!!!
Wed. 8/10/11 10:36pm Harry Casey Type:

GQ - Disco Nights loved that one GREAT show Evan, per usual.
M - Pop Musik was a huge one back then.
Wed. 8/10/11 10:38pm Randy in NC:

@efd you are right for sure!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:38pm T-Zero:

@Julie: I doubt you'll find much on disco rought as an "official" sub-genre. These days it get's lumped/dumped into being called Dance Punk, Synth-Pop these days... which is "fair" I guess.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:39pm Noah:

Evan - Can you fill in for me tonight? Just keep playin the disco while I stay home and tear the floor up!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:39pm Julie:

That "ahhhhhhhhhhh baby!" is definitely one of the top disco moments
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:40pm Julie:

well then what IS "disco rough," besides perhaps some sort of gay code
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:40pm G:

Evan's decided if he keeps the talkovers minimal, he can squeeze in three or four more tracks before the witching hour...
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:40pm Gibson Bro:

It's all about that four-on-the-floor at what ... 120 BPM? Would you consider Fly Robin Fly by Silver Convention (German, incidentally) as the first disco hit?
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:40pm efd:

Noah, what do I tell your guests? They've been tweeting all day about coming out here!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:40pm Julie:

@Noah get some disco and join in! Keep the party going!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:41pm cheri:

heey julie what's up??
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:41pm Weems:

Normally I know 4% of the songs on the EFD show, tonight the number is more like 84%!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:41pm G:

There is a disc titled Disco Rough from 82, so that term did have some currency back in the day...
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:41pm cubicle carl:

Disco ninety one one.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:41pm Julie:

what's up? I'm listening to the Evan Funk Davies Disco Dance Party that's what's up!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:43pm Stevel:

Did NOT expect Dr. John. Very happy.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:43pm T-Zero:

Not sure it would be any kind of "gay code".

@G: Yeah. Celluloid Records put out an album compilation with that title. Listening to it would probably provide a better understanding of disco rough than me trying to pigeion hole it.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:43pm cheri:

i'm digging it too julie,,,
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:45pm Joe B:

there were many disco hits before Silver convention.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:45pm T-Zero:

@efd: Thanks much much much for the show.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:45pm cheri:

evan,,julie i really love disco!!!!
Wed. 8/10/11 10:46pm Randy in NC:

The synth on this Dr John sounds like Kraftwerk
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:46pm Pidge:

Terrific show Evan. Reminds me of my old days at 96FEVER in Clearwater, Fl. 1979
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:47pm efd:

"Rock The Boat" by Hues Corporation (which Randy mentioned/requested earlier) is often cited as the first charting disco single, but I don't think there's universal agreement on which song was truly the first "disco" song.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:48pm T-Zero:

I'm really liking this dr john
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:49pm Kat:

Thanks, EFD, I was going to ask for the producer credit on the Dr. John track! That explains a lot. Aside from the corny lyrics, that was pretty awesome.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:49pm Silver Convention:

"Fly, Robin, Fly" (1975) is the Billboard chart-topping non-instrumental song with the fewest number of unique words in the vocals, six.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:51pm efd:

Pidge, "96FEVER" sounds like it would have been right up my alley!

Yeah, that Dr. John song is pretty sweet. Plus, he sounds like Frankie Smith! :)
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:53pm efd:

Patrick, if you're still out there: Your request is next on WFMU!
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:53pm T-Zero:

@efd: Would it be fair to say disco rough is a type of early disco electronic house? I don't know how to explain it to Julie.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:55pm efd:

I hadn't heard that phrase until you brought it up earlier, so you're on your own with that one! :)
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:55pm T-Zero:

But see, this is the problem with genre classification because I don't think Alan Vega would really fit in disco house. Beh! (Waves a white flag)
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:55pm Gil Gerard:

I am having Viet Nam like flashbacks, except instead of rice paddies running red with blood I see the Solid Gold Dancers and bad Chroma-key.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:55pm cheri:

julie this is a true fact,,, i used to be called "disco diva cheri" but not anymore,,, is"nt that right evan??
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:57pm Gil Gerard:

this I like, though. and Rubberband Man.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:58pm T-Zero:

@efd: Oh! When you mentioned Material, I thought maybe... Guess it must have been more am "inside among my friends" term back in the day ... Thought it was more known. (Oh well...)
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:59pm KR:

Grooveline was another great Heatwave tune, and Always and Forever. Rod Temperton ... wrote huge hits for Mike Jackson.
  Wed. 8/10/11 10:59pm efd:

cheri, I don't know of anyone who called you that besides you.

T-Zero, yeah, I know the band Material but hadn't heard that term used before to describe them.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:01pm Memory Lapse:

Who did Don't Disturb This Groove? Too stubborn to Google
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:03pm G:

The System, 1987
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:03pm cheri:

thnx very much evan..
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:04pm Stigwood:

Best Disco song possibly ever. Perfectly captures the time and vibe. Incredible.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:04pm Julie:

Bee Gees are a bossy bunch aren't they? Don't tell me what I should be doing, you Manx bastards
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:05pm Noah:

I have my Coffee Break shirt on JUST for your show Evan, Frankie "Hollywood" Crocker is on it....
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:06pm Joe B:

wow, thought Groove Line was a lock for this show!
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:07pm efd:

Joe, I thought so too! Switched it up at the last minute!
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:08pm Rudiger:

Keep the tunes comin. Makes me wish Jammin 105 didn't groove off into the sunset.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:08pm WranglerDGuy:

efd did you just say "Big Star" as in "Sitting in the back of a car" Big Star???
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:08pm Stevel:

OK Julie. You made me post this parody link. (Manx bastards indeed!) Ever hear the Hee Bee Gee Bees? (It has its moments.)
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:09pm Danne D:

I always wondered what cheri sounded like.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:10pm cheri:

i'm forever in your debt ,,evan.hiya danne!
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:10pm efd:

WDGuy, no no no - big starS! (I was trying to cover up for the fact that I couldn't remember who it was off the top of my head!)
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:10pm Who Knew:

She sounds a lot like Texas Scott, matter of fact.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:10pm Gil Gerard:

Back when this was all happening, there were actual reports on the network evening news about an affliction called "disco thumb" - which people suffered due to excessive finger snapping while at the discotheque.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:10pm Julie:

Do you think we can replace the dead Bee Gee with one of those?
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:11pm Julie:

@Gil a resurgence of "beat thumb?"
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:12pm Disco Thumb:

O, snap!
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:12pm Danne D:

Hiya cheri! Figured you'd be on the board tonight.

Loved the Yes/Thriller mash-up earlier, EFD.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:13pm WranglerDGuy:

Ooops. That's what happens when one listens while reading Sci-fi.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:13pm Danne D:

*ponders that somewhere in a parrallel universe there's a person name cake asking for this very song*
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:13pm tomB:

The return of Disco Duck in Murphy's Law! &I always maintained that the original Disco Duck was musically a notch above many others that summer of '76.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:14pm cheri:

ooh evan you are the greatest
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:14pm annoid:

Wow, you are really dredging up some memories here. I didin't even know the artist's name was Cheri or that she was singing "Murphy's Law"
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:14pm Julie:

Does Rick Dees still have a radio show?
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:14pm KC:

Do ya wanna go ... partay
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:16pm cheri:

evan & julie ,,i do believe in disco
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:17pm T-Zero:

@efd: That's okay. I'd never heard the term "smooth disco" before either. lol And this set I'd have called electrofunk ;) Genre/style classification is such a morass with crossovers, groups constantly being recategorized/relabled etc, all that matters is if you like it you like and if you don't, you don't. (Not "you" personally of course, just in general.)
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:18pm WIKI:

As of May 4, 2011, Dees is hosting the morning show at R&B oldies station (and sister station of KIIS-FM) KHHT, "Hot 92.3" in Los Angeles.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:18pm Gil Gerard:

"I AM... some dancer!"
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:19pm Julie:

does the thriller mashup count?
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:19pm T-Zero:

Sorry. Trying to describe it still for Julie, and became a bit obsessive. I'll drop the subject.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:20pm Disco Thumb:

No actual Jackson voices were harmed, or used, in the making of that mashup.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:21pm Gary Indiana:

La Toya's "Imagination" must be cued up.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:21pm Julie:

Okay now I want a disco thumb illustration, thumb dressed in disco suit
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:21pm Julie:

I don't believe La Toya is a real jackson. I think they grew her in a lab or something? we didn't hear of her till much later
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:22pm Mark Farner:

Rebbie! Inchworm
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:23pm efd:

  Wed. 8/10/11 11:48pm The Bartender.:

Last call. Last call.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:48pm G:

Don't let it go another four years! If it's quasi-annual you actually have a few make-up installments, since the last one was in 07!
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:48pm Danne D:

*visualize EFD barricade himself in the studio with Noah furiously banging on the door while EFD continues to spin*
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:49pm Julie:

Ask Noah..maybe till his guests get there!
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:49pm Eric:

This track is mixed very nicely.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:49pm Danne D:

@The Bartender - of course we know what disco classic usually plays at last call
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:49pm T-Zero:

This (let the music play) always makes me think of the Boy George cover of The Crying Game even though this came out long before.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:49pm Gil Gerard:

I could do a couple lines and probably keep going for another half hour. But then I 'd have to do another couple lines.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:50pm osvi:

Ah, the days of recording old skool mixes on Pop's cassettes...
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:50pm efd:

  Wed. 8/10/11 11:50pm T-Zero:

  Wed. 8/10/11 11:57pm T-Zero:

  Wed. 8/10/11 11:57pm Share:

Fantastic. One for the books, Evan.
Wed. 8/10/11 11:58pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Wow--I missed a rare occasion to hear Cheri on the radio (I knew her in the 80's--she was the daughter of Geraldine Hunt who sang Heartbeat)
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:58pm Kat:

This song (Centipede) has always creeped me out.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:58pm Gil Gerard:

@efd - watch out for those "hot" centipedes out there.
  Wed. 8/10/11 11:58pm Julie:

  Thu. 8/11/11 12:00am Phil:
