Hi Julie
That photograph, is it Brighton, England?
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:19am Julie:

Camden Town, north london.
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:20am other david:

Morning Julie & listeners :)

Particularly liked that Arc Gotic track

Hope all the London playlist frequenters are alright
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:20am Julie:

@OD you and me both. Welcome guys, it was awfully quiet for a bit there!
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:21am Marmalade Kitty:

Good morning julie!
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:21am T-Zero:

Heh, no stalker tonight.
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:22am Julie:

hi Kitty! Hi T-zero.
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:23am T-Zero:

  Tue. 8/9/11 3:29am fred:

Good morning Julie!
I'm late, I somehow managed to go back to sleep listening to Professor Dum Dum (I must be tired)
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:30am Julie:

good morning Fred! Have some tea
Tue. 8/9/11 3:31am fred von helsing:

London's burning...
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:32am fred:

Julie, you read my mind, I just started some
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:34am other david:

Hm, Dum Dum's soothing dulcet tones helped wake me this morning :P

(fred you must have been exhausted!)
  Tue. 8/9/11 3:35am fred:

Baby jesus talk has driven me to stupor before, must be something in the wine
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:09am other david:

*decides to write academic paper on goth music & its link to desiring coffee*
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:10am Julie:

@OD Groovy
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:14am T-Zero:

This was when? 25/26 July?
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:16am Sam:

Coffee and cigarettes in the dark rain, that's my area of doctoral research
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:16am Julie:

June 26th
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:18am T-Zero:

Thanks, Julie. I meant, June.
Tue. 8/9/11 4:19am Matt from Springfield:

Still made part of the InkSuc set! This was what I had been waiting for!

Did you record all these sets on the same night?
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:20am Julie:

@Matt yup! Was quite a bill..and a loooong hot day
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:21am other david:

Sam that sounds right up my street :P

Julie - nerd question, what did you record the set with?
Tue. 8/9/11 4:23am Matt from Springfield:

And, as before, ALL lights are out here except the monitor!
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:24am Julie:

@OD Wav recorder, I think it's made by Sony (it's the station's) right into the sound board
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:24am other david:

Lose Yourself at the Nymphaeum, strongest song in the set so far methinks, excellent stuff :)
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:24am Julie:

They had some wonderful visuals on the screen next to them as well, which of course I cannot emulate here.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:25am Julie:

@OD oh yeah that's a great song. It was in my head for days after I saw them. I told Candia (singer) it was a hit
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:26am T-Zero:

Well, sorry, but will have to catch the rest on the archive. Conflict schedule at the moment with a program that's not archived. ;(
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:26am Julie:

the engineer also recorded individual tracks on whatever his set up was, so it's all sort of a combo of both
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:26am Julie:

haha goodnight T-zero thanks for stopping in!
Tue. 8/9/11 4:28am Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of which, what kind of headgear is the singer wearing? Some kind of wreath or laurel?
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:29am Julie:

Yes some kind of leafy crown.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:30am T-Zero:

@Julie: Yeah. I'll follow the messages but want to hear this broadcast of the 2010 Jazz Baltica Festival
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:31am Julie:

@T if you hear anything spectacular feel free to comment about it here and we shall apply it to the show ;)
Tue. 8/9/11 4:32am Matt from Springfield:

@T-Zero: Are you listening to a NZ station? Perfect segue from earlier--if you are, what's the time there now? In the summer I found EDT is 16 hours behind.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:33am T-Zero:

@Julie: It's Barbara Buchholz playing thermin; Guy Sternberg electronics and Michael Wollny on piano. There are 5 but not sure who the other two are.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:35am T-Zero:

@Matt from Springfield: Yeah. lol I'm listening to sound lounge. It's 8:30 NZ time, program started at 7 and goes 'til midnight.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:35am other david:

Jagermeister, a word that should be banned between 6AM & 6PM

*munches breakfast*
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:36am Julie:

Candia is obsessed. There were Jager signs all over the venue she was like, "I'm going to be wearing that!"
Tue. 8/9/11 4:37am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Just like you said to Clay, Jäger is the closest thing to goth food you could think of (not counting "hemlock salad"!!)
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:38am other david:

Bonus points if you got pictures of her actually wearing one of them :P
Tue. 8/9/11 4:39am Matt from Springfield:

@OD: It's still night here, but lately I've gone to bed early and gotten up early to catch these sets. Being in the middle of the workweek--I'm never drunk during this show!
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:39am Julie:

  Tue. 8/9/11 4:40am other david:

Clove cigarettes and Jäger, staples of a balanced goth diet
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:40am Julie:

feel free to have a couple pints during the interview portion of our show
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:40am T-Zero:

Clove cigarettes are banned here where I am.
Tue. 8/9/11 4:42am Matt from Springfield:

I smoke those! Yeah, cloves and Jäger for goths.
Reading Bret Easton Ellis books that take place during the 80s, I call a "Bret Ellis dessert" to be a clove cigarette, and a kir royale!
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:42am T-Zero:

(Wonders what weird kind of mash-up sound would result if I try to listen to both of these programs simultaneously) This schedule conflict sucks.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:43am Julie:

We forgive you, but you must do your homework and listen to the archive.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:44am T-Zero:

@Julie: Thanks ;) I'm kind of fascinated by thermin playing.
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:46am T-Zero:

theremin I mean
Tue. 8/9/11 4:46am Matt from Springfield:

Christopher Lee--ULTIMATE bad guy, with all the Hammer Horrors, James Bond, Saruman, over 400 film credits! Nearly 90 and still around!
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:48am other david:

@Matt, hmm I can see the Purple Turtle serving the BE Dessert on future goth nights :D

Folks in the band sound really nice - and remarkably sober
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:49am Julie:

Well I was kind of keeping them from drinking their beer
  Tue. 8/9/11 4:55am other david:

And yet they remained civil :)
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:02am T-Zero:

@Julie, not sure this would fit on your program. Better suited for Dan Bodah maybe.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:06am Matt from Springfield:

Wooooo! Thanks for recording all these sets!
Have to fill up with these songs on the FMA.
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:08am other david:

Yep, huge thanks for recording the sets and sharing them with us. Sounds like a bit of an ordeal to get it done, but it was well worth it :)
Tue. 8/9/11 5:09am Matt from Springfield:

I see I missed "Low Budget"--later 70s Kinks, but still a great one! Look Blue Go Purple, I love them! Kiwi rock. And those Gothic Comps, they really have tons of those!
Tue. 8/9/11 5:10am Matt from Springfield:

Ahem. "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and I hope we passed the audition!" (laughing, fade out)
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:10am Julie:

It was a lovely perk to my vacation!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:11am T-Zero:

Okay then Back here now. Figures both sets in each program would end at the same time.
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:12am Marmalade Kitty:

Camdens the electric ballroom windows were smashed in last night during the disorder
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:13am Julie:

@MK Such a mess
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:16am Marmalade Kitty:

It is shocking how it has spread from city to city. London, Bristol, Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool all suffered last night
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:16am Julie:

oh man...Manchester okay?
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:18am other david:

brave covering a cure classic, nice version though
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:18am T-Zero:

@Marmalade Kitty: Seems rather pointless as well. Not being there it's hard to say. But from what I've been reading it seems to have little do with that spawned the original protest.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:18am Matt from Springfield:

I was unaware until this short but telling headline on Wiki's front page: "Public disorder in London continues into its third day".
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:20am Marmalade Kitty:

I have not seen or heard reference to Manchester in the news. I was up all night listening to reports
Tue. 8/9/11 5:22am Matt from Springfield:

Well-Tempered Clavier!! Prelude in C is a beautiful dream, the distillation of my Baroque sensibilities. Along with PGB, thanks for returning Classical (and harpsichords!) to WFMU!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:22am T-Zero:

@Marmalade Kitty: Well stay safe!
Tue. 8/9/11 5:23am Matt from Springfield:

@MK: When times are tough, riots really get out of hand. I hope you're safe where you are!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:24am other david:

Well-Tempered Clavier <3

Excellent version too

Rosalyn Turecks recording is my go to
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:24am T-Zero:

Hmmm. Maybe theremin play *would* fit, Julie. lol You did just play clavier.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:26am Matt from Springfield:

That Human Flesh was cool--like a spoken-word piece from UbuWeb mixed with electronic music.
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:26am Julie:

@T nothing is offlimits here!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:27am Julie:

I played musical saw one time!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:27am T-Zero:

heh, that *is* close lol They can sound about the same.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:29am Matt from Springfield:

Gentle Waves, Solace for Pain indeed! Isobel Campbell was in Belle & Sebastian, that explains this kind of Twee sound, but I wish they played more of her non-B&S stuff like this. She's quite good.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:30am Matt from Springfield:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now entering the Neo-Baroque portion of the show. Sit comfortably, and enjoy the Major chords and fine instrument arrangements!"
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:31am other david:

Ah this set is ridiculously good, I'm smiling here - ridiculously wide range of styles brilliantly put together :)
Tue. 8/9/11 5:31am Matt from Springfield:

I am a fan of The Left Banke--underrated and underplayed, so much more than just "Walk Away Renee".
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:33am other david:

Oh dear oh dear, regarding riots:

"Beggars Banquet, Domino and a host of other indie labels have become the latest victims of the riots ravaging London after the distribution warehouse where much of their stock was held was burned to the ground this morning."

Tue. 8/9/11 5:34am Matt from Springfield:

@OD: It's great today! I woke up to InkSuc, and this variety is getting me ready for the day ahead! I'm not a morning person, but somehow I like getting up early as long as it's still "late night"!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:34am Marmalade Kitty:

Thanks. Unfortunately It seems those who live in residential areas near shops and the high road/streets have been hardest hit, those with flats and apartments above shops and stores in particular, smashed looted and set on fire. Lots of homeless folk now.. awful
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:35am other david:

@Matt - exact same here, I like the stillness :)
Tue. 8/9/11 5:36am Matt from Springfield:

@MK: That's especially tragic, considering how many would have to leave their homes with rent subsidies cut, now there are going to be thousands more without homes...
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:39am woj:

hi julie! tuning in to catch the tail end of the show. will check out the IS set once the archive is up.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:39am Matt from Springfield:

@OD: I like what you said earlier about academic journal--I occasionally say I would like an academic journal for my analysis of outsider and "incorrect" music heard here. With a vibrant blog, I think WFMU Academic Journal should be the next step forward!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:40am Julie:

hiya woj!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:40am T-Zero:

Heard that on Evan's show a couple days ago. Really like that track. (Butterfly)
Tue. 8/9/11 5:42am Matt from Springfield:

Current and former DJs, volunteers and contributers could be in the peer-review pool. To consider your whole article, you could submit a one page abstract, and ANYTHING else you've written (to weed out frivolous suggestions and those who don't write well). Then 3 or so people could review your complete article!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:43am Julie:

this is heavy I will have to come back and read this later
Tue. 8/9/11 5:46am Matt from Springfield:

Yes! It is "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession"!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:51am other david:

Matt, such a thing must be curated by one with relevant qualifications... Professor Dum Dum, step up to the mark sir!

Right folks, I gotta pop out and run some errands. As ever - lovely talking to you all, thanks for a great show Julie

Take care all, catch you later
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:53am fred:

@Matt: almost spilled my coffee at that journal idea. To make it realistic, you should have a prize for the most cited paper
Tue. 8/9/11 5:54am Matt from Springfield:

Catch you later other david! Have a good day!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:54am T-Zero:

@Julie: Heh, that wasn't a complaint about (Butterfly). However, as much as I like The Left Banke, they're heavy WFMU play is getting to be a bit much.
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:54am Julie:

Thanks Other David! Thanks everyone for listening!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:55am Julie:

@T yep you're right, but I hadn't really explored the album yet!
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:57am Marmalade Kitty:

Great show Julie!!!!
Tue. 8/9/11 5:57am Matt from Springfield:

@fred: Yeah, the Blog posts here are fantastic and so extensive, some of them probably could be expanded into journal pieces. While such a journal would cover unusual, FMU-types of art, the articles themselves must be well sourced. An actual forum for reviewing serious ideas! (Kenny G's a professor, I wonder if he would take the helm...)
  Tue. 8/9/11 5:58am T-Zero:

@Julie: It's okay. And I must have written and deleted comments about the Left Banke... you don't know how many times. I don't care much for complaining about what's played. But I've heard them every time I've tuned in for what seems like a week now, albeit usually a different track. But why I like WFMU is it's variety of groups.
Tue. 8/9/11 5:59am Matt from Springfield:

Great show Julie!
I'll "see" you all later, and as always, have a great Tuesday!
  Tue. 8/9/11 6:00am Marmalade Kitty:

  Tue. 8/9/11 6:00am T-Zero:

@ Julie: And I promise to listen to your interview on the archive :)
  Tue. 8/9/11 2:51pm Van:

Nice show Julie - thanks as always! Really enjoyed Inkubus Sukkubus from Camden. Being a classical music lover, loved the Lewis track :) Loved quite a lot here today actually. I had to go track down Rasputina on Spotify to listen to that entire song lol...hey did you know they have a cover of Wish You Were Here? It's pretty nice actually. Thank you oh great magical WFMU archive! And hey, I got my WFMU T-shirt in the mail yesterday! :)
