The music that Sexteto Tabalá plays was declared "an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO in 2005: a century-old blend of cumbia and Cuban son with influences from the Americas, Africa and Europe. We're honored to have the group in our studio on the eve of its Lincoln Center Out of Doors / CTMD Heritage Sunday free concert (on Sunday August 7th at 1 pm along with two great local Colombian groups).

Sexteto Tabalá is also performing at Farafina, 1813 Amsterdam Avenue on Sunday night August 7 at 9 pm: http://www.farafinacafeharlem.com/

Listener comments!

  6:13pm Shanee:

Your show is a great start to my evening. I'm enjoying the music very much.
  6:16pm Your DJ:

Thanks Shanee!
  6:21pm other david:

Ditto Shanee, this track is particularly superb :)
  6:22pm Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Rob and all the listeners.
  6:31pm Your DJ:

Thanks Other David and greetings Richard and everyone!
  6:37pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hanggai sounds amazing.
  6:38pm Shanee:

I saw them at Bonnaroo this year and yes, they were amazing!
  6:44pm Your DJ:

Hanggai you mean - yeah, I heard they really got people going at Bonnaroo! I saw them at Drom in NY and they were great there too. It's interesting 'cause they toured the US once before but it was as a four-piece acoustic unit, more traditional, but this time they did their full throttle Mongolian folk rock extravaganza!
  6:50pm Shanee:

I saw Huun Huur Tu a couple of years ago and was expecting Hanggai to be similar, but these guys were something else! Not to say that Huun Huur Tu wasn't great.
  6:59pm Your DJ:

Shanee and others - if you're interested in a Tuvan folk rock hybrid that is in some ways farther out than Hanggai, check out Yat-Kha! (I know many of you know them already.) Albert Kuvezin, leader of Yat-Kha was originally in Huun Huur Tu but wanted to do less traditional stuff.
  8:40pm Torbjørn:

Cool to to hear these Norwegian tunes via New Jersey, loving this set. Greetings from Norway !
  8:56pm coelacanth:
