Casey Rae-Hunter (Future of Music Coalition) & Sherwin Siy (Public Knowledge)  talkin' Copyright Alert System & Center of Copyright Information   Options
[10 AM] On July 7th, America's major Internet Service Providers, music, and film industries announced an agreement to cooperate on anti-piracy measures. They will establish an Orwellian "Center for Copyright Information" to monitor Peer-to-Peer networks, and to send out Copyright Alerts. The six alert levels start out as educational warnings, but may escalate to "mitigation measures" including the disruption of Internet access.

Casey Rae-Hunter is Deputy Director at the Future of Music Coalition, a nonprofit working to ensure a diverse musical culture where artists flourish, are compensated fairly for their work, and where fans can find the music they want. Casey issued this statement on behalf of the FMC.

Sherwin Siy is Deputy Legal Director and Kahle/Austin Promise Fellow at Public Knowledge, a public interest group working to defend your rights in the emerging digital culture. Public Knowledge issued a joint statement with the Center for Democracy and Technology on the Copyright Alert System, and Sherwin posted his thoughts here

Listener comments!

  9:05am Dead Corporate Eyes:

wha? things look weird!
  9:06am Parq:

Thanks for the alert, Jason. Too many people in my peer group just don't get the importance of this issue.
  9:14am jason:

Welcome! Parq glad you're on the alert. DCE, is purple weird?
  9:17am Dead Corporate Eyes:

like the weirdest! good morning!
  9:17am BSI:

Q: Is purple weird?
A: God, I hope so...
  9:19am hamburger / london:

Barney v Grimace
  9:21am pierre:

Bonjour Jason,
glad to check in on this "j'ai vu l'eau vive" track :)

happy Bastille day everyone !
  9:21am maestroso:

Wow. Messa Au Monastère. Awesome.
  9:24am pierre:

hey Mr Sigal, is the "Copyright Alert System" like HADOPI law we have in france?
  9:25am Parq:

Pierre, happy anniversary of the day your ancestors started cutting off rich people's heads.
  9:29am Dead Corporate Eyes:

Parq, we need some of that action here! Violence is never the answer...sometimes.
  9:29am pierre:

well not just rich people, more people from Aristocracy, but yeah thanks :)
(and my personal ancestors come also from egypt so i kind of like pharaohs as well)
  9:34am BSI:

Hey, a little death never hurt anyone.
  9:38am pierre:

i tried to search the lyrics of that song > difficult.
  9:40am Elvis Costello:

I've waited all my life for just a little death...
  9:54am Robert:

Gorgeous instrumental that.
  9:55am Cecile:

Can those industries do that? Can't that be brought into court or something?
  9:55am john:

  10:01am BodegaMan:

great show so far!
  10:07am Parq:

'Cile, for decades now, both Democrats and Repubs have made it a priority to fill the state and federal benches with openly pro-business (i.e., pro -plutocracy) judges, so it's very unlikely that a court would overturn this, even if it were a matter of law, and it's probably not.
  10:10am Cecile:

I'm not anti-business, some laws are useful, but lack of freedom for consumers is bad for business in the long run.
  10:14am Dave B:

True - freedom is one thing, but theft is different.
  10:15am Dave B:

curious if this "blacklist" will be made public? If so, I'll just avoid it....
  10:15am Cecile:

Exactly. I want the artists paid. I don't want to fund some exec's kid's private school - unless he or she is really doing their job.
  10:16am Cecile:

King Sun, the rapper, was burned by piracy. He said more bootlegs sold of his music than legit releases.
  10:23am Cecile:

Many, many things are also Internet-only. Or you get a price break or other incentive for using the 'net.
  10:24am Dave B:

If the industry was smart... YEARS ago they could have owned P2P, using it as a method to "release" low quality teaser/tasters

Instead, they are reactionary and now trying to catch up to lots of missed opportunities.

How does this all fly in the face of the U.N. declaring intrernet access as a human right?
  10:33am Cecile:

it seems like corporations regularly chase off the idealistic and entrepreneurial employees who would think of things like that. they don't fit the mold.
  10:37am pierre:

agreed Cecile, i'm not angry about this behaviour, just tired…
  10:39am Dave B:

It's all about "monetization"

I work at one of those corps, that's all I ever hear about.

Personally, I prefer the phrase "kicking water uphill"

that's more what its like.
  10:39am Cecile:

I love it, Dave. I'm going to use that phrase.
  10:40am Cecile:

My phrase is "swimming through wet cement."
  10:42am Dave B:

thats a good one too Cecile!

Hey Pierre - hows the garden!
  10:42am Handsome Harry:

Love it. Great tune.
  10:45am Parq:

I'm angry aobut it, actually. I've known a few people in the mainstream music biz, and for years I've been listenting as they smugly explained that the entire body of thought of which FMU is an avatar simply doesn't exist. The fact that they could make more money if they saw the light is their problem.
  10:46am pierre:

the garden (on my balcony, let us be clear) is looking nicer than ever, thanks !
(now i've got basil, rosemary, two lemon tree, one mango tree, three Cyperus alternifolius, a mentha, one coriander)
  10:48am pierre:

@ Parq : how come somebody say that the idea behind wfmu doesn't exist, as wfmu is the best proof that this idea exist ?
  10:56am Cecile:

Yay! Wipers.
  10:56am Parq:

Pierre, I can't even begin to tell you how myopic these guys are, and how hidebound by conventional wisdom. Dave B, am I right or what?
  10:57am eyenoise:

ROMEO . So classic.
  10:59am Dave B:

Parq, you are right. The old regieme/old guard/old way of doing things is just that.

(problem is, so am I!)
  11:00am Cecile:

it's hard because I have great ideas at 50, and no get up and go...
  11:04am Cecile:

One happy thing is that I own original pressings of all the Wipers records in the box set. Nobody liked the Wipers where I was at, so I was able to get them cheap used. I think I paid $10 for the three of them.
  11:06am Carmichael:

Good morning Jason and musical Argonauts.
  11:08am Cecile:

Carm, I thought Carmageddon was about you! LOL!
  11:09am Dave B:

@Carmichael - with a passing glance I thought that said Arrogants...
  11:12am BSI:

the Chrome is brilliant as freak.
  11:13am Carmichael:

Carmegeddon?? Is that a reality show?
  11:17am Cecile:

No, it's one of the highways being closed for the weekend in LA.
  11:19am #K:

  11:23am Carmichael:

Wow Cecile, you're up on your CA highways! I never heard of it. But I did finally get some news on your State government shutdown. Bummer. We passed a law here last year that politicians don't get paid if a budget isn't passed on time. Miracle: budget was passed 10 days before the deadline.
  11:26am Cecile:

I kind of hate it. I think the people who will get the gov back on track will be the liquor distributors and bars - no licensing is taking place!
  11:26am Dave B:

besides today being Bastille Day it is also

Pandemonium Day - http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/July/pandemoniumday.htm

National Nude Day

Take your pick
  11:27am Cecile:

national nude pandemonium day?
  11:30am J J:

Is it also camel toe day? I ask because it seems a lot of people are celebrating this week.
  11:31am Cecile:

JJ every day is C T day. I think Ministry wrote a song about it.
  11:31am Dave B:

better camel toe, than moose knuckle
  11:31am san culottes:

Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, Nudité.
  11:36am Parq:

Cecile, National French Nude Pandemonium Day.
  11:37am Parq:

"French Nude Pandemonium" would be a good name for an album.
  11:37am still b/p:

National Nude Pandemonium Day could become Randymonium Day.
There's a traditional Nude Hiking Day on summer solstice, and favorite image -- from the heroine's account; not personally witnessed, unfortunately -- was from an AMC hut crew member. She hiked to another hut for a prank theft, as they often do, and returned hiking nude with just her...booty: a 6 ft. plush snake.
  11:39am Parq:

Nude hiking? Big deal. Show me nude bushwacking, and then I'll be impressed.
  11:40am Cecile:

nude biking just sounds painful to me.
  11:42am jeff:

life is hard enough with clothes on
  11:43am J J:

Those bike seats must get awfully slippery.
  11:43am Dave B:

a nude body is a peaceful body

no place to hide any weapons
  11:44am J-Mar:

Nashville in tha house!
  11:45am Parq:

JJ, on the other hand, I''ll bet female nude bikers have a really nice time. Okay, I'm going to hell for that.
  11:46am Dave B:

From my hometown folk hero/eccentric - Public Nudity For Peace

  11:46am still b/p:

Joe Gould: "In the winter, I'm a Buddhist; in the summer, I'm a nudist!"

"nude bushwacking" has dual meanings that would be demonstrated in the practice itself as the subject and environment interact.
  11:48am Cecile:

You would think, Parq. But probably not.
  11:52am pierre:

i like nudity, wfmudity
  11:54am J J:

hoola hoops and pogo sticks. those could be fun/funny group nude activities.
  11:59am Carmichael:

Naked break-dancing.
  11:59am ru:

you would think that...with little to no understanding of femail anatomy
