Dead Corporate Eyes:

blue screen of death and a phone call already waiting for me before I got my coat off. Gonna be a GREAT DAY!!!
  9:28am
Danne D:

If someone in the phone room is reading this, take a picture of the blank slate of construction paper upon which the phones are - it's always fun to see the evolution of that over the week :)
  9:31am
Danne D:

Nothing got more commentary than when I was Vegas last summer than my Woof-Moo shirt :) No less than Penn Jillette commented on it (though of course he probably knows from the station)
  9:33am
tomasz.:

aaahhhhhh this song's amazing

  9:45am
Liz B.:

Thanks for all the nice words and pledges!
  9:46am
Danne D:

Have you seen that some of the comments boards (including this one) can be adopted this year? :) All it takes is a prepaid pledge of $180 and the speed to beat all the other would be adopters (adoptions are first-come first-serve). Think of all the comments board cred you'll be able to show off each week :)

Liz's comments board adoption page is here and will tell you what to do:

Danne D:

Congrats annie, that's great news :)

Vicki :D dc pat :) All the cool kids are on this board.

There's always such great prizes - trying to pace my prize account pledge will be a challenge as always
  9:52am
zax:

I'm gonna miss your marathon slot, V. - gonna be teaching in Jerusalem. Think I'm saving my 20$ for Fabio :)... But everyone should pledge all the time!
  9:52am
Vicki - DO or DIY on WFMU:

Glen Otis Brown? I knew him too :) Played at the launch of Creative Commons in SF
  9:52am
dc pat:

play Tour de France again, I missed half of it, THANKS A LOT WORK!
  9:54am
annie:

please explain the adoption thing... do i have to pay all in a chunk, cash on the barrel-head?
  9:55am
Vicki - DO or DIY on WFMU:

Zax - I'll be co-hosting twice - with Ken and with Bryce, in Week 2, next week - hope you can catch one of them, if not you can pledge several smaller pledges in the marathon too... and still get the same amount of marathon swag, etc...
  9:57am
BW:

Vicki! Glenn is a close fren he is here in NYC now
  9:57am
Danne D:

Hi Annie, yeah for the adoption thing it would be a prepaid pledge in a chunk. $180 for most fixture-type fixtures and comments boards. $365 for most DJs (but you do that a prize account if you like the drawings).

Here's the link to the main adoption page with the info:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/wfmu/sets/72157603873576097/
  10:00am
Cecile:

annie, awesome! Are you in the phone room?
  10:01am
Vicki - DO or DIY on WFMU:

BW - I last saw him in SF in about 2003, when the CC was first launched. I was involved as a result of knowing Rick Prelinger and the Internet Archive. And indeed the Free Music Archive is a perfect example of how to not only make music/media available in a way that keeps everyone happy, but also there is great scope for good curation (unlike much of the internet which is so random) and expanding this sort of thing back out again into live events/gigs at venues... it's just the beginning for WFMU and the FMA.
  10:02am
pierre:

the (very nice) Tim Biskup t shirt is available for at least 50$ is that right?
  10:04am
annie:

cecile, wish i was..wish i was..... i was wanting to adopt the wf-mu logo and name it mike-shirley.. i ain't go that kinda dough at the ready..
  10:04am
Richard from Venezuela:

Happy Marathon. Good morning all.
  10:04am
Lonious Monk:

You already have one Pierre!
  10:06am
Skirkie:

I've made adoption requests last week that have so far gone un-answered.
  10:07am
Danne D:

that's okay annie :) I hope you win lots of prizes with your pledges.

I agree with Skirkie that an adoption update is well needed.
  10:07am
Marles Chingus:

I love that Omar Khorshid album!
  10:07am
?:

yeah but i can (will) start collecting them, the only problem is that my size is not always available.
  10:08am
annie:

it'll be in 10-15 dollar increments..
  10:08am
pierre:

^
? above is pierre
  10:08am
yair Yona:

That album is brilliant. sublime frequencies is a brilliant label
  10:10am
Run Sa:

@Marles, I adore your name
  10:11am
Lonious Monk:

@ Runs Sa & Marles : i do too
  10:11am
Parlie Charker:

me too
  10:12am
Danne D:

Starting at $180, you can pay your pledge in monthly installments so that is a good option for folks :) (i.e. $15/mo). So you do, say, 12 $15 pledges during the marathon to try and win prizes and then can pay your pledge off monthly. Certainly a good way to play it as well.
  10:12am
Holeman Cawkins:

Me too!
  10:13am
Mive Daisies:

How's up y'all
  10:15am
Danne D:

All pledges big and small are good as when they are brought together they make great radio :) If you can give, please do and give what you are able to :)
  10:15am
Bix Beiderbecke:

And me t-- ....oh, wait a minute.

jaypee:

RE: Charlie Sheen. Trick question, he's still awake.
  10:20am
Danne D:

I was gonna be that person but "Operation Powerball" did not succeed on Saturday :(

Ken might change his middle name for a million dollar pledge I bet :)

On to "Operation Megamillions" on Tuesday! :)
  10:20am
Cecile:

jaypee, from three days ago.
  10:21am
Cecile:

Guy Fieri should give you some money, cause "you're the real deal".
  10:24am
dc pat:

if anyone hasn't tried the iphone app, do it. It turns your phone into an am radio that receives WFMU anywhere.
  10:24am
Marmalade Kitty:

Because the music they constantly play..
On the leeds side-streets you slip down
On the provincial towns that you jog 'round
Feed The Dj, Feed The Dj, Feed The Dj..
Feed The Dj...Feed the Dj... lala la♫
  10:25am
Ronny Sollins:

Can't we get some of those people like Jim Jarmusch, Lou Reed or Matt Groening to drop some money? Since they are "avowed fans" and they probably have some spare money and all that.
  10:26am
BW:

Matt Groening

that's all I am saying - but now he has to beat Charlie Sheen to the punch
  10:28am
dc pat:

Charlie already drank all the punch..
  10:31am
Cecile:

I can't believe how much mental energy I am dedicating to this guy, but his crackup is practically operatic.
  10:32am
Cecile:

Him and John Galliano! Who knew the funky little fashion troll was a closet Nazi?
  10:36am
BW:

ok folks lets AMP it up! take LIZ Berg over the top - we are counting on YOU
  10:39am
Dilettante:

you help me / I help you. FAIR DEAL
  10:44am

  10:46am
Vicki - DO or DIY on WFMU:

many thanks, Liz :)
  10:46am
Dilettante:

Liz: can send you 2 copies of KRAUS lp as reward for pledge? You do not have to show this message.
  10:47am
Brifford Clown:

By the way, the WFMUthon is my favourite season of the year!
  10:47am
annie:

charlie sheen irony: he declined narrating my son's politically-charged movie because he wanted to keep the series going.. ... life's funny..
  10:51am
glenn:

not to put too fine a point on things, but charlie sheen is an asshole.
  10:55am
Gary Busey:

Thanks to ol' Charlie, I'm lookin' pretty good right now.
  10:55am
Carmichael:

Wednesday is payday, for FMU & me.
  10:58am
pierre:

i love KXP !
(they made a great album)
  10:58am
Cheri Pi:

I love K-X-P too!
  11:00am
Lonious Monk:

OEDA?
  11:01am
pierre:

yep, it will definitively be on the next one one Lonious
  11:02am
Cecile:

pierre, we're planning a trip to Montreal this year. I'm not at that point yet, but can I practice my French on you on the comments board when I actually know enough words to converse?
  11:02am
R I S K Y:

PLEDGE YOU FREAKS!!!!!!
  11:03am
Lonious Monk:

(i would love to help too Cécile :)
  11:05am
BW:

2500 dollars to go people to make Liz Berg's goal! We can do it with your help!
  11:05am
pierre:

of course you can, (as you see, i'm often on the comment board) but i'm not sure i'll be the best teacher. Mais sinon c'est quand tu veux.

@ Lonious : what a womanizer you make.
  11:09am
Cecile:

LOL! Right now my Frency is limited to "bonjour" and "au revoir".
  11:10am
?:

Liz,

My whole family is still rocking to your premium cd from last year--especially the Thai (?) hip-hop track. My 5 year old daughter goes nuts for that one. Don't worry, I will get my pledge on sometime soon for this year.
  11:11am
Cecile:

I can't even spell French right.
  11:12am
Anonymous:

Yo La Tengo! :) They were great on their "Freewheelin'" tour. Too bad I won't be able to listen to them playing the requests this year.
  11:12am
BW:

we won't make the LB goal without your help people
right now it is W F M YOU!!!!!
  11:13am
Lonious Monk:

not Pierre, this is serious!
@Liz : love this album Saigon Rock (i guess it's sublime frequencies? their work is so amazing)
@cecile : be careful Pierre doesn't ask for pledge too
@Pierre : rrh
  11:13am
glenn:

most people in montreal speak english anyway. making the effort to speak french is always appreciated, but don't worry too much about it. if you get a french english dictionary, make sure it's for canada though.
  11:14am
Cecile:

Glenn, I know, that's how it went last time we were there, but I want to do a little better this time. Like, having a ten word conversation or something.
  11:14am
Lonious Monk:

merci Glenn ther"s no point in teaching anymore now
  11:14am
pierre:

That's a good start !
the spelling is not so important for the conversation. If you want to know specific sentences, it'll be a pleasure to translate. And then, with all the french songs played on fmu, you'll be able to hear some and practice

@glenn : you are right, people in montreal use a lot of words that we don't.
  11:15am
Richard from Venezuela:

WFMU the best radio in the world.
  11:15am
les yeux fermes:

("frency" is closer to "franacais" than "french")

My favorite Canadian french phrase is "sirop d' poteau." Telephone pole syrup, aka Mrs Butterworths! I love it.
  11:17am
Lonious Monk:

did you mean http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budos ?
  11:18am
pierre:

sirop d' poteau sounds canadian something to do with maple syrup, i guess
  11:19am
Anonymous:

Argh, where is this music from?
I have heard it so many times, but since I didn't grow up in the US, I don't know where it's from, I assume it's from some game show?
  11:19am
Danne D:

I remember calling directory assistance in Quebec once (was calling for the number to get tickets to the Habs) and I foolishly asked for an English-speaking operator. The operator huffily said "You'll have to do with us!!!" Oops.
  11:20am
Danne D:

Anonymous it's from the game show "The Price Is Right". It's usually played on commercial break rolls.

Richard from Venezuela:

Yes it is benjamin. The best radio station in the whole wide world.
  11:21am
glenn:

if you're into architecture / amazing old houses, i can't recommend strongly enough going to the chateau dufresne, at the corner of rue sherbrooke and rue pie ix.
  11:21am
pierre:

some people there are really into the defense of french language against english influence.

Just a question : when you buy items from the website, the money still goes to the station (i mean not during the marathon)?
  11:22am
<eyes closed>:

Aaaiiiggghhhh!!
  11:28am
glenn:

unfortunately (or not) english is pretty much the universal language of business, and sometimes it seems like the quebecois just don't get that. as a result, they do suffer economically.
  11:29am
Danne D:

to pierre - yes - crapola central benefits the station :)
  11:30am
still b/p:

Love the sound of that Debo. They were scheduled to be in Cambridge the other day in a line-up and show that musta been GREAT! But damn, I wasn't free or aware.
  11:30am
Lonious Monk:

someone's been censored, no?
  11:35am
abigfan:

yes. my post was deleted. no speaking truth to power here
  11:35am
Cheri Pi:

I have thisLuk Thung! of which you speak, Pledge people! This is a great deal it is worth far more than $15!!!
  11:36am
Liz B.:

I didn't have time to respond. WFMU does not pay for our staff to fly out to Barcelona. The Primavera Sound fest pays our way. I would rather not spread a rumor that isn't true.
  11:36am
pierre:

to Danne : awesome.
to glenn : yes english is important. at the same time i like diversities of expressions, languages, and words. but you are right, if its harmful, it is something to research
  11:37am
BW:

yeah "big fan" you can't speak "truth" when you are an ignoramus!
  11:38am
Lonious Monk:

ouch.rumours suck.worst stuff.
  11:39am
glenn:

i think a big fan owes a big apology and a big pledge to make up for being a big doofus.
  11:39am
BW:

There is no "fat" at this station, the staff and volunteers here work VERY hard - true inspiration
  11:41am
Lonious Monk:

(growing's awesome!)
  11:41am
pierre:

Growing's awesome !
  11:42am
Lonious Monk:

@ Pierre : what? again?
  11:43am
pierre:

again what ?
  11:44am
doug in dc:

Today's lesson learned: don't confuse Kenny Millions and Kid Millions in an event invite.
  11:46am
Lonious Monk:

i've got too much coffee in my blood.
Liz seems too! :)
  11:46am
Parq:

Even assuming that FMU is paying for anybody's travel to Spain during the Primavera -- and they're not -- no one who's listented to the Primavera broadcasts could honestly think that FMU staffers on the scene are on vacation. The work it takes to get all that great music to us -- and last year's was just tremendous -- is incalculable. And *that's* the truth.
  11:47am
Richard from Venezuela:

abigfan is a stupid troll. Ignore him/her.
  11:48am
pierre:

that is what i wanted to say Parq, but my english is not as good as you, so thanks. I was thinking, anyway i don't think listeners will ever think that.
  11:49am
Dilettante:

AS SONIC PROTEST IS! great music you would not be able ....
  11:49am
Danne D:

It's amazing how little $ the station is able to run on. To pay a mortgage on a building, the electricity, other bills, postage, and minimal staffing, etc - to do that on just over $100k per month is really remarkable.

If you are looking for an example of love in this world, it's the dedication, hard work, and yes, money that people contribute to WFMU.
  11:50am
pierre:

wfmu has to come in paris for "La Villette Sonique", i'm ready to pay for the trip !
  11:50am

Awesome SONIC PROTEST is one of the best festival in France! Go for it soon!
  11:51am

We friends of the Endtables will be having a listening party in Louisville during their show at SXSW. Thank you WFMU for taking them there and sending it back to us! And also being a kickass radio station.

Similar public stations in this area (in terms of size) operate on budgets about 5 times FMU's budget. A big public station in the area operates on (by my back of envelope figuring) about 40-50 times FMU's budget.

This is not a poke at those other stations - it's just illustrative of how far FMU stretches their fundraising dollars.

Regardless of whether staffers' expenses are reimbursed for a given project, their entertainment is paid for -- because their entertainment is ours.
It's like a lot of things like this. Unless you're raising money for poor people for necessities, fund raisers are basically for the entertainment of the fund raisers and others. For example, a kiddie football team.
