Listener comments!

  12:09am
coalhard:

this show is like going to a head shop--except the black light posters are projected right into the mind
  12:11am
cheri:

happy valentines day joe,,joe if you brought the cake cd tonight could you please play it?? ty and i got satisfaction..
  12:13am
listener james from westwood:

can the devo cover be far behind?
  12:14am
dave:

((We Can Haz Some (I Can't Get No)) Satisfaction
  12:19am
Parq:

Have you thought about suing?
  12:22am
coalhard:

a man in japan has the best lava lamp ever--after volcano on shinmoedake peak erupted through wall
  12:24am
noah:

oh and then there's that movie with Justine Bateman called Satisfaction. I dare you to dig that one out.
  12:35am
coalhard:

hosni mubarak can't get no satisfaction either--hehe
  12:41am
coalhard:

it is 7:41 am in egypt--a whole new audience just opened up
  12:42am
cheri:

ok joe i think we get it ,,you can't no satisfaction ,,i'm sorry,,
  12:43am
Parq:

This was all just a set-up to play the Diller, I'm guessing.
  12:46am
coalhard:

ah democracy--we love you!
  12:46am
mark:

Where's Dangerfield's version?
  12:46am
Rory:

Holyshit! so many versions of this song. Keep it up.
  12:49am
Chris:

This isn't a playlist, it's a death march! Wonderfully...unique theme tonight, Joe!
  12:50am
Rory:

Someone tell Mick Jagger that WFMU is playing his song over and over again lol.
  12:52am
Parq:

Rory - and Mick gets 36¢ per play!
  12:53am
coalhard:

mick is proabably with charlie sheen right now getting a blood transfusion
  12:55am
coalhard:

actually mick is a straight guy--good head on sholdiers
  12:56am
Rory:

Maybe this will get him to make a pledge lol
  12:56am
Victoria:

Brilliant!! Keep it up.
  12:58am
Rory:

Are you kidding coalhard. The Rolling Stones have been battling drug addiction since the sixties.
  12:59am
coalhard:

now keith is a different story--even charlie hides under bed when he comes around
  1:00am
dave:

Not Mick, Rory. Little-known fact: he was one of the first straightedge punks. If you look closely in the Altamont footage in "Gimme Shelter", you can see the "X" on his hand.
  1:03am
Parq:

Rock on, Joe.
http://tinyurl.com/pogsatsfd
  1:06am
Rory:

I saw the rolling stones live in 2006. Mic Jagger looks like he could still rock for like another 15 years! He does look waaay better than Keith.
  1:08am
coalhard:

but only one of them will live into old age--well older age
  1:10am
dave:

one thing you get from these versions is just how much TAMER all of them sound than the original. say what you want about the rolling stones, they could bring pissed-off in bucketloads.
  1:12am
Victoria:

Nah, the Strangeloves and Manfred Mann versions stand up the original.
  1:14am
dave:

the strangeloves cover gets closest of the ones i've heard so far, but i don't think it or the manfred mann one really has the bite of the original.
  1:15am
dave:

(and the strangeloves and paul revere ones only seem to approach the original 'cause they're pretty straight covers, i think)
  1:15am
coalhard:

i hope all these songs don't cause an imbalence in the solar system--my chair is moving a bit
  1:17am
Victoria:

The riff is just so damn insidious.
  1:18am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes Joe, you finally got a theme show going!
  1:19am
mike:

This is the only riff, with my very basic guitar skills, that I can play...
  1:20am
Matt from Springfield:

Like Listener James above I'm waiting for the Devo version--really great in "Casino"!
  1:21am
Matt from Springfield:

From "Golden Throats", Phyllis Diller's cover/stand-up routine!
  1:23am
coalhard:

i'm afraid a black hole will form and swallow us between two giant lips
  1:25am
dave:

wow, never heard the blue cheer version. it's good.
  1:25am
fleep:

Actually, a moderate amount of satisfaction was probably within the grasp of all these people.
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Who's next? Tom Jones! Or Rolf Harris, maybe?!
@dave: Blue Cheer should get more airplay in general, they were smokin'!
  1:26am
Rory:

I wonder if the stooges did a cover of this?
  1:28am
Matt from Springfield:

@fleep: That is true, if they just stopped, took a breather and looked at what's REALLY important. Then they could sing "(I'm not currently getting any) Satisfaction, (but with the right mindset I'm sure I can achieve satisfaction with what I currently have)"
  1:28am
Victoria:

Yeah, the Blue Cheer version was awesome!
  1:31am
dave:

"(As a well-paid professional musician, I have the financial and social liberty to feign a lack of) Satisfaction"
  1:36am
dave:

also, this träd gras och stenar thing is awesome.
  1:38am
coalhard:

re-invent--is the key word dave--hang in there!!!
  1:38am
Rory:

Keith Richards was no Jimi Hendrix but, he could up with some really good riffs.
  1:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Has anyone heard the original demo tape Keith made of the Satisfaction-riff so he could remember it? The story goes he dreamt it while on tour in a hotel room, woke up, recorded it on a reel-to-reel, and promptly fell back asleep, with snoring on the tape!
  1:41am
Victoria:

Yea, reinvent coalhard...you got it.
  1:41am
dave:

oh, i love the reinventions. i didn't mean i thought the covers were worse 'cause they mostly didn't have the bite of the original. i just think one of the great things about the rolling stones is the threatening undercurrent of a lot of their best stuff.
  1:42am
coalhard:

where in the hell is bill nye the science guy when you need him
  1:42am
Victoria:

dream riff
  1:44am
Matt from Springfield:

Wooooo! Go Träd Gras och Stenar! (flicks lighter)
  1:46am
dave:

seems like the original bassist from träd gräss och stenar died recently, so that was a nice little memorial, too.
  1:47am
coalhard:

room on comments is going to run out way before show is over--i'm going to curb thoughts--but everyone please continue!!!
  1:49am
fleep:

I always bring along a little plastic bag in case I have to curb my thoughts.
  1:52am
coalhard:

love ya fleep--funny!!
  1:54am
Matt from Springfield:

I think I've heard that Jonathan King version before--early 70s UK glam is a hobby of mine.
  1:55am
fleep:

Cowbell!!!
  1:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@CH: They say we've already hit "peak comments", comments from here on out will be increasingly more expensive and lower quality.
  1:57am
dave:

on the bright side, the arrival of Peak Comments means society will be motivated to pursue more efficient and healthier means of radio-program commentary.
  2:00am
dave:

the mic breaks could not be more perfect.
  2:01am
fleep:

I can't get no music commentary
  2:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Television! "Who needs TV when I got--Television."
  2:02am
Matt from Springfield:

@dave: Yes indeed!
But so unenthusiastic, no commenting on the playlist, Joe makes it seem like he's doing this because he lost a bet or something!
  2:04am
Victoria:

Okay we're up to 1978, can't wait to see what's next!
  2:04am
Confused Listener:

I thought all WFMU shows are done because of lost bets...
  2:05am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes! DEVO! I robot dance in my Satisfaction!
  2:06am
lauren berry:

joe mcgasko! i missed you last week!
  2:07am
Sea Weasel 457:

DEVO! Best version!
  2:07am
Matt from Springfield:

Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby...
  2:08am
lauren berry:

i'm gonna try to be there during marathon times but it coincides with midterms :(
  2:14am
Matt from Springfield:

The Residents: an art collective known for avant-garde "deconstructions of Western popular music"--call it what you will, this is incredibly "ahead" metal for '76! That's the spirit!
  2:14am
Victoria:

Always liked the Devo version better than the Residents version. Wonder if they knew about each other's versions at the time.
  2:16am
coalhard:

being branded a looser is no way to go through life @lauren--be here!!
  2:20am
Brian in UK:

Good morning Joe from dull UK, if it is you. Just read 'Life'? Caused me to buy the record of 'Talk is Cheap' after reading it. It's got some good grooves, surprising! Makes the new pup bark at the record player!!
  2:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Really different version with 80s R&B Lax!
  2:32am
dave:

i'm trying to figure out if there's some general statement you can make about the covers that leave the "(I Can't Get No)" out of the title, but I got nothing.
  2:40am
fleep:

I honestly believe Bjork cannot attain satisfaction.
  2:41am
Still Waiting:

What, no Cat Power?
  2:42am
Still Waiting:

Thanks.
  2:59am
Matt from Springfield:

Great show Joe! Now all you have to do is all the OTHER theme shows we've talked about! I enjoy something out of the ordinary (like this) occasionally, but I hope you'll do a Single File next week!
  3:00am
fleep:

A feat, a stunt, a bet, a dare, a statement, an odyssey, whatever this was, thanks Joe.
  3:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone here as well!
