A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

annie:

i've been watching the chicago doppler pretty carefully, have to drive up to syracuse today to pick someone up at the airport.. she has a layover in chicago...
  9:23am
SmokinJ:

annie, it's 3 degrees here 'down the road' from Chi-town :)
  9:23am
annie:

ten here in ny.. waay too early, the streams have already frozen.. and ponds too
  9:24am
SmokinJ:

As long as my bike starts ;)
  9:25am
annie:

hehe.. :D
you getting flurries or heavy snow? it shows precip coming in from the west around joliet/hammond
  9:27am
SmokinJ:

No, we missed the big one and got only an inch or so. They got about 12" west and south of here..
  9:28am
annie:

almost wish it could be postponed..
  9:28am
dc pat:

about 1/4" in DC, 21 degrees, bike riding is excellent.

R I S K Y:

'MORNIN TROUBLE!
  9:37am
dc pat:

no such thing as "too much snow." Last winter KICKED ASS!! I'M HOLLERING NOW!!!
  9:38am
SmokinJ:

I'd rather have snow than cold..
  9:40am
Robert:

What's "the brown thing"? Too much snow is yucky for how it feels, not primarily for how it looks. unless I'm missing something. But I agree that a dusting of snow is pretty.
  9:41am
SmokinJ:

About 27"... Just a 'dusting' :)
  9:41am
John:

I had a dream last night that you forgot your show was on Tuesday. Yes I have dreams of listing to WFMU. Love the show from Fort Lauderdale FLA
  9:44am
still b/p:

No snow on the ground, but I feared morning tales of...BLACK ICE. (Dunh-dunh-dunnnn!) None sighted or skidded, though; no bike laydowns or bone hits.
  9:44am
dc pat:

I dunno, standing around in the street having cocktails with neighbors while a blizzard puts a halt to normal life is my kind of thing I guess...
  9:46am
SmokinJ:

People are nicer when it's like that ya' know?
  9:48am
dc pat:

yeah, but I'm lucky to have great neighbors too.
  9:49am
trouble:

good morning fort lauderdale! robert the brown snow is what happens very quickly to gorgeous white snow in an urban area such as nYC, dirt, mud from the cars etc...
  9:49am
dc pat:

still: I was riding PRIT-TY slooowww this morning...
  9:49am
tim:

still b/p - are you a year round bike commuter?
  9:50am
SmokinJ:

I hear ya'...
  9:53am
Andy in Iowa City:

Morning Trouble! Haven't checked-in in a while... thanks as always for the great tunes.
  9:54am
still b/p:

Nah. Don't mind cold, but bike sleeps for the season once snow, ice, slush and salt have pretty much taken over the pavement. Very short trip, so an easy walk.
  9:54am
trouble:

good morning andy in iowa city!
  9:55am
annie:

long ago, when i had no brain i used to ride my bike all year up here in oneonta. snow was really no issue unless it became slushy.
  9:55am
Josh RVA:

My hound dog slipped and fell on ice this morning- first time I've ever seen her go down like that
  9:56am
dc pat:

exactly annie, you can just ride on top of it unless it's too deep.
  9:59am
annie:

i stayed on the streets and became very alert for cars. walking is no issue really, unless it's more then a half-mile now. would love to find an old schwinn ..coaster brakes.
  10:00am
Robert:

The snow gets dirty no matter how much there is, so I don't see how too much of it promotes the brown thing.
  10:01am
tim:

I started riding my bike all year round when I moved to Central Illinois. It's flat and ususally snow/ice melts within a day or two. Today I didn't ride because it's about 4 degrees and didn't want to start any bronchial issues. Of course, most of my co-workers act like I'm skydiving without a parachute because I ride in "bad" weather.
  10:01am
Robert:

I have an old 1 speed with coaster brakes -- plus a hand brake for the front wheel.
  10:03am
M.A.D.:

Guntin' Mornin'
Trouble, I'm hankering for a little dub old style.
Do you have any Black Uhuru, Sugar Minott, or Burning Spear?
Gracias.
  10:04am
tim:

Yeah, riding in winter tears the hell out of the deraileurs and brake pads. I've learned to keep my winter beater in one gear and take it slow and low.
  10:04am
Adrian in London:

Back! Looking smooth and rarin' to go? We had seven flakes of snow here in south London this morning; I almost went home, just in case.
  10:04am
dc pat:

The only thing that stops me getting on a bike is too much snow and/or ice everywhere. I use to not care about the ice either until I went down 3 times one day.
  10:05am
still b/p:

Big snow's fine, but bigger roadside banks last longer and hold more of the gravel, grunge and litter that's concentrated and revealed -- more browning up while melting down.
  10:06am
still b/p:

...just a thought on the cosmetic question.
  10:06am
dc pat:

true, I loved the blizzards last year but the bike lines were shit for weeks afterward.
  10:08am
ffrr:

Bflo @ 11°F & 6" this morning. They closed part of the thruway, unlike a week1/2 ago when people were stuck in their cars for 14 hrs.
  10:08am
Robert:

Still b/p's explanation of brown vs. snow volume makes sense, thanks.
  10:10am
Robert:

Put another way, if there's not enough snow to be worthwhile shoveling -- as is true with the dusting we got last night here in NYC -- then nobody's going to be piling dirt on top of it.
  10:11am
Igno Raymus:

so much for global warming. experts now shout global colding or a process known as global encolding. jesus even ireland has been snowing for a month which is a freak scene
  10:11am
still b/p:

Hazard-wise, the debris berms and extra sandy margins at road edges after final snowmelt in early spring are where all manner of puncture devils lurk.
  10:13am
Kristy in TX:

I've come here just to link to a photo of my charismatic chihuahua: http://www.ofwhimsyphotography.com/imagefiles/20101114-KTSL-WEB-4803.jpg
  10:14am
M.A.D.:

I know the pain.

I have a very CHARISMATIC Poochie, and all mortals want to touch her. Phoebe, my doggie, is like the Maharishi of my block. So, unlike others, I have taken a very non-possessive stance. All are welcome to touch the hem of my utterly adorable pet (for $5 a feel). Good way to supplement your income.
  10:15am
Adrian in London:

Kristy: I like the way your dog's collar matches your hat!
  10:15am
still b/p:

Now THAT'S a blizzard dog! That's a dog for Shackleton.
  10:16am
Jennique:

I have an incredibly charismatic dog and truly enjoy the attention she gets. Most times people on the street don't even acknowledge that I am there on the other end of the leash. It's all good, I don't mind. I am considering putting her on the ballot and having her run for mayor of Brooklyn. She's met (and licked) most of the boro already. See photo:

good morning everyone, I crawled out from under the quilts to say"Thank you Trouble, merci beaucoup!"
  11:59am

It's a decent modern mob film, but for gangster stuff you gotta go with the classic stuff. Little Caesar, etc. ...
  11:59am
Carmichael:

Sorry Trouble, I had a laugh when I read what you just wrote. What does one have to do with the other?
