Portland's lustily theatrical band / troupe / spectacle Vagabond Opera are the Pacific Northwest's charismatic champions of old-country Bohemian cabaret. But not totally old-school - they do it their own way, citing influences from Astor Piazolla to Zappa. Or as they put it, "Paris hot Jazz, gut bucket swing, tangos, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, klezmer and vigorous originals meet a world of riverboat gambling queens, Turkish belly dancers, and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich."

Vagabond Opera descends upon WFMU just ahead of NY gigs - Kingsborough Community College bandshell in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn July 31 at 8 pm, and Little Field, 622 Degraw St Brooklyn on a bill with Copal very late (2 am) also on July 31, plus Joe's Pub at 9:30 on Aug 1 - to serenade us (sans fire-eater - safety first) live in the studio.
