Listener comments!

  12:03pm
dc pat:

mike noble: depends on where you live though and where you're going. If you live in Mt Pleasant and you're going to a bar in Dupont or down to the mall, it's pretty flat.
  12:03pm
dc pat:

oh, hi LizB
  12:04pm
brian:

a great start to post noon life!
  12:05pm
mike noble:

thanks for the info dc pat! maybe i'll see you on the road some day.
  12:05pm
Kenzo:

Welcome to the beta not-quite-yet-totally working comments thingy!
  12:07pm
dc pat:

right on, comrade!
  12:08pm
dc pat:

Kenzo: what's different in this version?
  12:08pm
Kenzo:

It will become gradually apparent, perhaps...
  12:09pm
dc pat:

Really?..

..

hmmm..

let's

seee....
  12:11pm
Liz B.:

Hi everyone, and welcome to today's grand experiment! Do the lab rat!
  12:11pm
Duke of Earl Grey:

A mysterious giant downwards-pointing button has been appearing for me and then vanishing. So its purpose will be revealed over time?
  12:11pm
Kenzo:

So, did/does anyone see the "Listener comments!" heading twice at the top instead of once?
  12:12pm
dc pat:

just once here. Mac/Firefox
  12:14pm
mike noble:

this mode doesn't feel particularly fancy.
  12:14pm
Kenzo:

Hi, Duke! Does it appear and immediately vanish every time a new comment appears? What browser and version and OS are you using? Feel free to email me the info if you prefer, via http://wfmu.org/email.php?id=28
  12:14pm
mike noble:

OH WAIT. i see it! fancy!
  12:14pm
dc pat:

ah, nice--I get it. You don't lose your place when reading previous comments. Nice.
  12:16pm
jdalton:

At first there was two listener comment boxes, now only one and intermittent flashes of that down arrow.
  12:16pm
brian:

all this free music archive stuff! liz.. you rule it.
  12:17pm
Kenzo:

Thanks, John. What browser/version/OS? When does the arrow flash? P.S. Yeah, this music is awesome.
  12:18pm
TK:

ahh... reminds me of home. thanks liz.
  12:18pm
dc pat:

welp, can't play anymore kids. Got to go talk to guys in suits..blah. Nice work Kenzo.
  12:19pm
Vfats:

This is neat. Are they still planning on rolling out a full message board thingy with registration and such?
  12:21pm
jdalton:

win7/ff3.6.3 - Now the arrow won't appear. I also went to basic mode and back and it looks like the usual comment box.
  12:25pm
Duke of Earl Grey:

Kenzo, PC/Firefox. Windows XP Pro, I think. Sometimes the arrow reappears v. briefly, can't figure out a pattern. Took a look briefly in Chrome, didn't see anything unusual. Guessing it's supposed to appear when I scroll up and auto-refresh will no longer pull us back down to the bottom comment? New comments are scrolling in nicely, too. I like that.

Great show Liz!
  12:25pm
Kenzo:

Oh, I'll bet the arrow stopped appearing intermittently at the same time the second Listener Comment heading went away...which was likely after the very first time you either tried to post a comment, or switched to basic mode and back again. Let me know if the flashing arrow KEEPS happening!

(What's SUPPOSED to happen is the arrow will only appear when you're scrolled back looking at old comments, and a new comment is added. And then you can use the arrow to scroll down to the bottom if you want. Arrow disappears when you're at the bottom, and things auto-scroll without an arrow as long as you remain at the bottom.)
  12:28pm
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  12:29pm
jdalton:

OK now I'm seeing the down arrow appear for a new comment when I've scrolled up to view older comments. I can then scroll down, it disappears when I get to the end. If I sit at the bottom of the comments I think it flashes and then loads the new comment.
  12:30pm
north guinea hills:

The arrow looks like pie. I like pie.
  12:30pm
Parq:

Disregard my two emails -- works for me now, too.
  12:30pm
RISKY:

LIZ!!!!! TAKE IT TO EM! BLACK PUS P P P PWWWEEEZ!?
  12:37pm
Edley:

Hi Liz: I just came back to my desk and was saying to myself..."this sunds familiar"...oh yeah, this is my band! What is this recording from? Then I realized....
  12:47pm
Kenzo:

Anyone using a Mac or Linux, or using Safari? Any issues?
  12:49pm
Kat:

yay upgrade.
  12:50pm
Eyeballjunk:

Favorite band name: Nuclear Power Pants
  12:50pm
dc pat:

firefox on Mac, no issues.
  12:50pm
Kenzo:

Vfats: Yes, user registration and new interactive playlist features are on the way. Can't say about a message board, but there will more places to write on, for sure.
  12:50pm
MacDaniel:

Nice upgrade. Using Mac OS 10.6.3, Firefox 3.6.3. Looks good, no issues!

Great show Liz!
  12:51pm

FYI Nuclear Power Pants is a Baltimore band.

Bad band names I've heard of recently: Black Cock, Bowling for Soup, Envy on the Coast, Gay Witch Abortion, Tiger! Shit! Tiger! Tiger!

Good band names I'd like to see: Molly and the Mouthbreathers, Trusty Sidekick, Postal Holiday...
  12:54pm
Duke of Earl Grey:

Kenzo: Oh, I see. It only appears if you've scrolled up AND if a new comment appears. Well, then it's working! Nifty. So there's no more auto-refresh dragging us down to bottom while viewing higher comments?
  12:56pm
?:

I once had a 1920's style novelty duo called "The Dixie Possum Stompers". We did songs like "Carve 'Dat Possum" and "I Like Bananas 'Cause The Have No Bones".It would be nice if someone with talent used that name.
  12:57pm
dc pat:

One of my fave names from way back was Come Off It Weller
  12:58pm
Trixie:

Toxic Shock Syndrome -TSS! - TSS!
  12:59pm
Kenzo:

Duke: Exactly; now you can calmly scroll back to read old comments without worrying about losing your place. Plus the new comments get added faster (and, soon, close to immediately).
  12:59pm
Liz B.:

Love all these names! TSS is awesome!
  12:59pm
Dan m:

Senator Crepes and the Ten Foot Tall Soda
  12:59pm
m:

I like the sound 'lang', so if that could be incorporated somehow.

I also love saying 'harlot' and 'trollop'
  1:01pm
dc pat:

I'll take any name AS LONG as you can get some decent search results on Google. So Harlot and Trollop are right out. So Capt. Creep and the Soda Jerks would work.
  1:02pm
Dan m:

All Dogs Go to Kevin
  1:03pm

Then there's the category of seemingly-interchangeable band names and song names, into which that Rayon Beach song falls.

I once tried to convince some friends to start a band that would be called "Josephine the Singer and the Mousefolk." One person pointed out none of us were named josephine, nor mice, nor did we intend a folk band. (We wanted to sound like our other friend's band, Black Tamborine). I said "therein will lie the irony" At that point one of the others raised his hand and said "I don't want to be in a band that does irony." That pretty much ended things. I still think its a good name.

"Automata gave a prize of a golden sundial worth £6,000 for the first person to solve the various cryptic clues to its location that were hidden within Pimania. The sundial was eventually won in 1985 by Sue Cooper and Lizi Newman, who correctly worked out that it could only be found on July 22 (because Pi is sometimes rounded to 22/7) at the chalk horse at Hindover Hill near Litlington, East Sussex."
