MASSIVE THANKS for your support during our recent fundraising Marathon!

Rob and National Geographic World Music's Tom Pryor report back on the world-musicky goings on at SXSW Music 2010, sampling selections by showcasing artists and sharing their impressions.

Among the many events Rob and Tom will revisit are Dengue Fever's climactic set at the WFMU / Aquarius showcase at Encore (as heard live on WFMU), the annual world / international showcase presented by public radio show "The World" at Momo's, the Remezcla alt.latin showcase at Antone's's featuring (among others) Colombian up and comers Choc Quib Town and Bomba Estereo, and Mexico's legendary indie rock pioneers Maldita Vecindad; and lots more. Plus Austin chow memories (from migas and jalapeno kielbasa to kimchi tacos and birria - Jaliscan meat soup).

Plus, your host and guest's thoughts about how world music fared at SXSW Music 2010 - and how world musicky artists and fans can find unlikely opportunities at this massive but overwhelmingly rock and roll-oriented festival / conference / youth culture bacchanal.

Music bed for concert info / show close.
Our only non-SXSW track of the show - the fine sophomore cd by the NY-based NE-Brazil inspired band.
Nat Geo World Music has been putting out some nice things with lots more on the way (like both of the other Nat Geo tracks we played on this show). It's making a strong play to be a viable new world music label despite the travails of the music industry. Thanks to this week's guest Tom Pryor from Nat Geo for passing the music our way; I'll be playing lots more in the weeks to come.

What a great song!
  6:58pm brock:

love the de-tuned-sounding percussion... awsome song
  7:38pm remembrance:

Thursday, I heard of Charlie Gillett's passing and thought of Rob and Transpacific because this is where I was first introduced to Charlie when, in 2004, Rob did one of his radio ping pong episodes with Charlie. Even though Charlie is gone, I can go back and listen to that show. Thanks, Rob, thanks WFMU.
  8:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I fell asleep during the SXSW show. Maybe most of it will appear in the archives at some point. You may have said that a few minutes ago, but I wasn't paying attention.
  8:14pm Your DJ:

Yes Ken, at least some will be posted I'm sure, just not yet.
  8:18pm dave:

that carsick cars thing is great!
  11:32pm slugluv1313:

hi Rob! (and Tom too!) unfortunately missed the show while you were on the air, will definitely listen to the archives!
