Listener comments!

  12:02pm
Carmichael:

Oh Maria, what an incredible start!!
  12:03pm
Eric:

Such Showmanship!! A Regular Sammy Davis!
  12:07pm
swami:

First album I ever bought, used for .50 cents. I was 10 and I liked the cover. Hated the music.
  12:07pm
Cecile:

mmm hmmmm
  12:07pm
zoot:

Strange coincidence. I was discussing albinism with a student this morning, and I brought up the Winter Brothers. It's like white on rice.
  12:08pm
Carmichael:

This song is the perfect illustration of the phrase "over the top".
  12:09pm
maria:

yeh-- I used to own this album, loved it in my tens, then thought it sucked, sold it. and well now I appreciate its merits once again, in a whole new way.
  12:12pm
berlusconi's nose:

ugh! please make it go away!
  12:13pm
holland oats:

this is the worst thing i've ever, ever heard
  12:13pm
Carmichael:

I believe Rick Derringer and Dan Hartman also appear on this here album.
  12:14pm
holland oats:

this is what cocaine does to people
  12:14pm
Roger Cramer:

I don't think I've heard this since the 70's. No one questioned the insanity of recording and releasing something like this back then. Thanks for playing it!
  12:15pm
maria:

yes it is Ricke Derringer on Geeeetarrrr
and where else could you hear the worst thing you ever heard???
It is good for the constitution
  12:17pm
berlusconi's nose:

but, i bet tom jefferson wouldn't like it either
  12:18pm
Carmichael:

Oh wow, get out of my head Maria!
  12:21pm
berlusconi's nose:

well...time to change channels
  12:21pm
gerardo:

hola, maría!, saludos desde chile!
(focus!)
  12:22pm
Cecile:

hey gerardo!
  12:23pm
Carmichael:

That's Hocus Pocus.
  12:24pm
TC Chuck:

Focus, The source material for Metallica's "Blitzkrieg"!
  12:24pm
Cecile:

I thought Blitzkrieg was a song by Holocaust, a NWOBHM band?
  12:25pm
gerardo:

cecile, honey!
long time no read!
  12:26pm
gerardo:

are you goin' to adopt ken again this year, cecile?
  12:29pm
doug in dc:

Is NWOBHM the longest rock acronym ever?
  12:29pm
Carmichael:

Little Richard dreams of being 1/10th as good as Esquirita. Rockin' the Joint was one of the best rock'n'roll songs ever.
  12:32pm
Cecile:

Eskew Reeder!

Gerardo, I already did!
  12:32pm
TC Chuck:

Nice catch Cecile. Metallica's Version is the only one that I heard before.
  12:34pm
BSI:

F/i! Wheeeee!
  12:36pm
BSI:

and the riff kicks in!
TRIPLE WHEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
  12:37pm
Carmichael:

Boy, this sounds like Hawkwind. Maria, you're pretty heavy today. And that's a good thing.
  12:38pm
gerardo:

wow, cecile - what was this adoption experience like?
  12:40pm
Cecile:

Just about a 1/4 second of white-hot searing pain. in my mind as I clicked on my PayPal button and then it was over.
  12:49pm
Carmichael:

Boy, when's the last time you heard of her? Was she in Jesus Christ Superstar way back when?
  12:51pm
gerardo:

lol, cecile - the things we do for 'fmu
  12:52pm
gerardo:

(actually, i'm in the midst of something of that sorts, so to speak)
  12:53pm
Matt:

Genesis is such a great record!!!! Thanks for playing!
  12:53pm
annie:

carm, looks like she is still singing.. she is all over rhapsody.. and she still looks great..
  12:56pm
annie:

look at this beautiful woman!!
http://www.yvonneelliman.com/
  12:59pm
Carmichael:

I like the casual dressing room snapshot of Jesus relaxing.
  1:09pm
Glenn L:

Mr. Blue Sky! Yay!
  1:10pm
gerardo:

you're right, annie. yvonne looks gorgeous!
  1:11pm
Cecile:

ELO should have written a Broadway musical. I would have gone.
  1:12pm
Carmichael:

She was my pre-teen crush. What Catholic kid wouldn't want to go out with Mary Magdelene??
  1:14pm
gerardo:

is it my idea or 'xanadu''s soundtrack was a sort of exploration into that possibility, c?
  1:16pm
Cecile:

It was actually mounted as a musical on Broadway reccently. I think it was their excursion, but Out of the Blue was so much better. And probably could have inspired so many ideas that would have been head and shoulders above Xanadu, which I saw in the theatre when it came out because we lived above it and had nothing to do.
  1:17pm
annie:

gerardo, for 59, that's damn good!! myself, i just look like my mother.. arrghh!!
  1:19pm
dale:

sweet shoe maria...i saw xanadu (the film) finally. my wife raved about it but i just felt sorry for gene kelly.
  1:20pm
Cecile:

It was a lousy movie. But not as bad as the President's Family. That was horrible.

me too, dale!
  1:20pm
dale:

that's sweet 'show', unless your're sullivan
  1:22pm
dale:

it's like when you saw people like astaire on CHiPS or macmillan and wife. i guess any acting job is a job when you're that age.
  1:22pm
dale:

it's like when you saw people like astaire on CHiPS or macmillan and wife. i guess any acting job is a job when you're that age.
  1:23pm
north guinea hills:

wow, i enjoy acid even when it's done by fatboy slim.
  1:25pm
gerardo:

c: it seems that something happened on the way to the film, as usual in these music/film industry endeavors. and yes, it was lousy - sorry for gene kelly, too

annie: yvonne's 59?! what's her diet?! - do you look like your mother or do you feel like her?

dale: i presume gene kelly was forced to do it. is there any data around?
  1:27pm
dale:

elder abuse.
  1:29pm
Cecile:

me too, ngh.
  1:30pm
Alex:

I love it when I turn on WFMU and you're playing something off an obscure old vinyl album I haven't listened to in decades (let alone years)
The cover on Incidents Out of Context is a great one with the band members "eating" electronic cables and chips with chopsticks. Best other example of this serendipity was hearing "Holland Tunnel Dive" a few times on WFMU a couple of years ago.
  1:31pm
gerardo:

dale and c: yeah, from the producer to gene. was that his last movie, btw?
  1:32pm
MD:

The FMU Mantra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:33pm
Carmichael:

You have now covered the entire history of music in one set.
  1:34pm
bennett4senate:

yeah, good stereo in the headphones on the YO YO
  1:34pm
Cecile:

the only swinging Donny was ever doing was on a swingset.
  1:34pm
dale:

imdb shows kelly was also in a gem called 'viva knievel'.
  1:36pm
muhrvis:

Greetings from Eugene, OR.

Loved the gamelan/just intonation thing.
  1:37pm
gerardo:

oh my, dale. that's real abuse
c, did the osmonds have their own cartoon series, just like the J5's?
  1:38pm
Carmichael:

Their collective life was a cartoon series.
  1:38pm
dale:

(pogoing)
  1:38pm
Cecile:

Yes they did. I think the J5 ran a season longer.
  1:40pm
?:

omd yay!
  1:40pm
dale:

theses sets make me wanna hear the long version of (love is like) oxygen. gotta root around through the rekkids.
  1:42pm
Cecile:

Intro to Osmonds cartoon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKN_yjoDTCY
  1:42pm
gerardo:

carm: you're right, but a real cartoon series came to my memory. that's why i asked

c: so that was the difference. i remmber watching the J5 series longer

dale: that sweet's song is still played in some chilean radios :S
  1:42pm
annie:

ahhhh gerardo, sweetness!! i only look like her... feel like 25!!
  1:49pm
bennett4senate:

  1:50pm
bennett4senate:

  1:53pm
Nat:

Solaris!
  1:54pm
m9:

Esplendor Geometrico early 80s Spanish Industrial
  1:58pm
gerardo:

that's the important thing, annie!!
last week i listened to yoko ono's interview, and she sounded in very high spirits - someone at the playlist commented something about her energy. i also wish to reach her age with that 'flow'

m9: 100% agreed on esplendor geométrico!
  2:01pm
annie:

yes, what vigor still contained within her.!!
  2:09pm
rick:

Hi Maria,
Great show, is that Solaris piece from the soundtrack to the original Tarkovsky film? If so, Is that soundtrack even available on CD?

If not, is it from the Soderbergh remake?
  2:10pm
gerardo:

yes, still active and sounding cool, annie. an example to follow.
maría: don't worry. apologies accepted, and your effort is noticeable
  2:12pm
maria:

Huh? gerardo I dont compute. what did I (not) apologize for?

Rick that Solaris was on a vinyl soundtrack LP
  2:13pm
MD:

"OH JAMES!!!!!"
  2:15pm
gerardo:

just remembered i have a CD version of thunderball around!
  2:16pm
Marisol:

c' est Serge Gainsbourg !
  2:20pm
Marisol:

GFR, por fa' dígame por qué SG siempre suena igual!
  2:21pm
Marisol:

I have this one on a cd too.
  2:22pm
Jeff from St,Paul:

Remember on Scharplings first ever 'Best Show' where he smashes a Serge Gainsbourg CD, and says it will never be played on his show.
  2:23pm
gerardo:

SG tenía super clara su voz, parece, así que le sacó ene partido.

it seems SG knew exactly how to use his voice, marisol
  2:25pm
gerardo:

what were his comments on that, jeff?

iron butterfly?!, can't believe it!
  2:25pm
Marisol:

That Historie of Melody Nelson is such a hot album indeed
  2:26pm
Marisol:

Iron Butterfly... this is the first time I heard any of this. I could have easily confuse it with some Plunderphonic piece
  2:28pm
your father:

stop touching the record player when I'm listening to my Iron Butterfly! i had a hard day at work
  2:29pm
Jeff from St,Paul:

Marisol, I think he just hates it.It was his first show and he was establishing what he would not be playing on his show and was smashing various CDs. He also smashed a disc by The Old 97s.
  2:30pm
Chris:

Accidentaly I just discovered this Tara Cross goes really well the instrumental to Verves Bitter Sweet Symphony.
  2:31pm
Jeff from St. Paul:

Whoops, that was supposed to be directed to gerardo.
  2:32pm
gerardo:

t's ok, jeff
  2:33pm
Nat:

ELO and now ELP! Sweeeeet
  2:33pm
BSI:

okay, jeez. Haven't heard the ELP live album since 7th grade. brr.
  2:33pm
gerardo:

read it, jeff - love that teen attitude: "let's start by saying what i will not do"
  2:34pm
Parq:

Miss Maria, you're knocking me out here. All the bands I loved in high school, even though I've since learned that these were incorrect tastes. Edgar Winter, ELP -- is Jethro Tull on deck?
  2:35pm
BobB:

I can feel "Olias of Sunhillow" lurking in the shadows.
  2:35pm
gerardo:

bob darin, a favorite in my parents's jukebox
  2:35pm
Carmichael:

I saw the ELP Live Tour. Was a big complex wobbly night of incredible greatness.
  2:41pm
Looms:

First time i enjoy the star war theme; maybe because it sounded here like christmas. Nice show Irene, thanks!
  2:42pm
Marisol:

"Dinosaur Makeout Party " LOL!
  2:43pm
gerardo:

i thought it was wookie party!
  2:43pm
Parq:

What kind of makeout music would they play at a dinosaur makeout party? Blue Flintstone Cult? Deep Speculative Color?
  2:44pm
Bad Ronald:

Keith Moon and Dave Edmunds were in Stardust too!
  2:44pm
Cecile:

David Essex had a pretty big career outside the states.
  2:45pm
Cecile:

And there was a movie before Stardust, a prequel, called "That'll Be The Day." Never saw it, though.
  2:47pm
elvie:

but but, where do you get the Dinosaur Makeout Party?! I must have it!
  2:48pm
Bad Ronald:

You tube clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hQDzV9kkGo
  2:48pm
gerardo:

that's a rite of passage of C20: loss of innocence via buying a one-track-good-only record, maria
  2:49pm
elvie:

thanks, maria!
  2:52pm
Jeff from St. Paul:

A Ween favorite of mine is the Jimmy Buffet take-off "Bananas and Blow"
  2:54pm
Carmichael:

Pushing Little Daisies and Watching them Come Up. My favorite Ween song.
  2:59pm
Marisol:

Sublime
  2:59pm
Carmichael:

Sorry Scharpling. THIS is the best show on WFMU. Way to go, Maria!
