Morning Ben, i'm just an outcast, don't know how long i'm gonna last
  9:07am
bw:

hold on Sean!
  9:09am
bw:

It's a vrey exciting show today - at 11 am I have two guests - the photographer Ed Burtynsky and the journalist Peter Maass - both spent the last decade traveling the world in search of understanding OIL
  9:15am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

Oil is more than just a social lubricant, it is an enigma wrapped up in a paradox.
  9:20am
Bad Ronald:

Hello!

BW - you need one of these for your cycling:

  9:24am
bw:

  9:24am
bw:

  9:27am
dc pat:

I use to get furious at SUVers every other minute while riding my bike until one day, after yelling at a dumb ass driver, a passing cop looked at me and said "It ain't worth it....it ain't worth it..." and he was right...dammit.
  9:36am
antonio:

I love that airplane picture, Tucson was a beautiful town, I'm homesick now. :( But this is a great show!
  9:38am
fishmonkeystew:

Good morning Ben, fellow listeners, and the world! I'm back to the grind stone after a two week jaunt to the UK, and WFMU is the only thing that gives me solace.
  9:41am
annie:

  9:43am
Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:

These photos really are quite good, but you didn't need me to tell you that.
  9:47am
bw:

morning Annie! surely you got something to ask about oil? no?
  9:49am
Tuscon:

everyone loves the plane graveyard
  9:52am
dc pat:

probably going to miss the interviews...I think the only reason there are "meetings" is because it's the only way managers have to show they are actually doing something...
  9:54am
bw:

dc pat - did you see the show?
http://www.corcoran.org/burtynsky/index.php
  9:57am
dc pat:

bw: nope, haven't been yet. I got 2 young monkeys at home and it's hard to do grown up things anymore...
  9:58am
dc pat:

man, I'm trying to like this Evangelista stuff but I think Bozulich isn't reaching her full potential here...
  10:01am
seang:

craving the smooth baritone of Robert Forster
  10:08am
Chris:

that bob dylan christmas cd is pretty hot, someone must have taken it home.
  10:08am
annie:

well...... oil, huh?? hhmmm.. it astounds me the shortsighted thinking of our illustrious leaders to only plan ten years in advance any issues about energy use .... where the hell are the small municipalities that step out of the control of the power companies and establish their own source? omg.. don't get me going.. sorry, back to our regular programming.
  10:10am
two great films::

Koyaniskaatsi and winged migration. it's all i'm sayin'
  10:17am
bw:

ken says if the bob dylan cd is gone - he will buy another one
  10:19am
annie:

guess i'll have to sneak in and steal the second one...
  10:24am
Parq:

Liked the slogan that came up on the home page just now. I want it on a tee-shirt: Incongruous Segues Are a Basic Human Right.
  10:25am
LizGig:

Should we really be giving this Dylan thing space? And, hey, I thought Yanks waited 'til after Thanksgiving to play Christmas, uh, music.
  10:25am
Chris:

oh man, you found it...
  10:25am
nasok:

oh man is this dylan album going to be the new horrible music in joke?
  10:26am
krebstar:

that was torturous
  10:27am
Jerz:

shit, I missed it! i wanted to hear that
  10:29am
the warden:

please give air to phil spector's jailhouse x-mas album if your going to make the dylan fans have panic attacks... wall of sound echo effects achieved by recording out in the prison yard
  10:29am
jeanne:

no u didn't
  10:29am
pauldepipersson:

that was dylan, wow, funny. love the images youve posted. whats the connection between them?
  10:30am
Chris:

how much iol was used in the production of that dylan cd?
  10:30am
LizGig:

Jerz, you don't. You really don't.
  10:32am
still b/p:

Santa DJs, all I want for Christmas is..

Dylan Christmas remix!
  10:35am
harvey:

  10:47am
Carmichael:

Good morning BW and people of poularity.

That Dylan song is ironically titled, no?
  10:55am
north guinea hills:

Are they now reissuing all of selda's past work?
  11:00am
pauldepipersson:

schwarma music for the berliniamsburg hipster
  11:01am
olgu:

hi north guinea hills,
selda bought the rights to all her songs in the 80s, and she's been re-issuing her 70s releases on her own label (major plak) for some time. the series is called 'turkulerimiz' which means 'our (folk) songs' and i believe she has 4 more of them coming up.
  11:04am
north guinea hills:

grazie olgu!
  11:10am
annie:

running errands, see you all later..
  11:13am
dc pat:

man, that pic of the motorcycle town there is scary. I'll bet there isn't one non-white people within 50 miles of that place
  11:14am
dc pat:

person
  11:16am
pauldepipersson:

for their sake hopefully not. it s white trash un-ironic mullet central-
  11:18am
listener bruce:

I grew up as a science nerd, and it was obvious that our suburban car culture, modern agriculture and many of our technlogical wonders are dependent on cheap oil.
But you can't mention that our wonderful advanced health care technology is dependent on cheap oil in the same way.
  11:36am
dc pat:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
  11:40am
pauldepipersson:

thx for posting those images. that highway 5 los angeles image blows my mind. What a beautiully tragic insane sight. I would love to fly over it and then go live in a cave in the west of ireland.
  11:42am
LizGig:

Well, Pauldepipersson, you are welcome to join us in recession! At least the rent on your cave should be reasonable.
  11:44am
Listener James from Westwood:

A fine, riveting, and scary interview, and will grab both books as soon as I can request 'em @ the library. Thanks, Benjamen, for hosting these two guests!!

Listener Bruce: A considerable amount of medical equipment is made from plastic, and much of it is only used once. Oil scarcity would raise the price of everything from IV bags and syringes to heart valves and joint implants.
  11:44am
dc pat:

oh YEAH! Congos, The!!!
  11:45am
Dean C. Rowan:

Not sure that's 5, which travels north of downtown from East LA, near Dodger Stadium. At this point, where 110 intersects, this stretch of pavement is 10. Nothing like flying into LA on a clear day. Christmas a few years ago was stunning.
  11:45am
dc pat:

there's just nothing like Cedric falsetto.
  11:46am
north guinea hills:

nothing better then lee scratch perry produced congos. anything by the congos not produced by him, not so much....
  11:46am
jk:

hey Benjamin, what was that little cumbia/hip hop thing that you just played? it wasn't the los brito track I'm pretty sure
  11:47am
dc pat:

10-4 on that ngh.
  11:48am
pauldepipersson:

lizgig. dont worry ive been in recession a long time now, and nothing in ireland can be rented cheap even a hole in a wall would prob cost you 100 a week, never mind a cave in kinegad.
  11:49am
bw:

jk - yes it was alika y nueva alianza - will fix
  11:51am
jk:

cool, thanks. great show this morning, really enjoyed the interview. I've always loved his photography
  11:51am
LizGig:

Where are you Paul? I'm in Tipperary.
  11:52am
pauldepipersson:

dean c rowan. you wouldnt happen to have any photos of flying in to LA on a clear day. I love flying over urban megalopolis hellholes. it gives me a big thrill. recently flew over johannesbourg, very interesting and fuked up.
  11:53am
dc pat:

Paul, LizGig: is Ireland going to beat France this weekend?

Abner Jay is so great.
  11:54am
pauldepipersson:

Hi Lizgig. Im from waterford, live in berlin, germany but am visiting my folks for a week. rain, cold, recession, depression. nice to have another irish person tuning in.
  11:56am
pauldepipersson:

dc pat: best result we can hope for is a 0 -0 draw because i we score a goal we will(as we always do) leave a goal in then france have the away goal advantage. i think we could qualiy, maybe if we got the 0-0 then performed a great 1-1 in paris but its so hard to say. we could also get hammered
  11:57am
Dean C. Rowan:

paul: Alas, no. Only memories. I lived in LA for four decades before moving north to Berkeley, but I visit the old digs often. It took me most of those forty years to realize LA is in fact not a hellhole. A mess, yes, but nothing like hell.
  11:58am
dc pat:

right and then a shoot out. yeah, that's what I was thinking. If there's one thing the current squad is good at right now it's draws.
  12:00pm
nasok:

best song of the week!
  12:01pm
pauldepipersson:

no im genuinely interested in urban architecture and city planning or lack of. ive always been a city dreamer hence living outside of ireland as soon as i could as it has no cities. I hope to visit LA next year. Berkeley is really nice. lived in san fran in '97. currently in Berlin, an interesting exciting city but landmass wise, tiny in comparison to LA. thx BW or the great show
  3:44pm
John:

Thanx for playin my disc A Bun Dance
