Options October 13, 2009: dedicated to Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack: a big part of why you listen to my show.

[photo: Jim McIntyre with his Mom at WBCN] Three years ago I did my first WFMU show as part of the regular weekly schedule. I dedicated that show to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, who was also known as Jimmy Mack. Jim's passion for music - and radio, for that matter - was overpowering. He started working at Boston's WBCN, one of the top rock stations in the country, while still in high school and eventually became a key part of their Music department. He was as generous with his opinions on new bands he loved (Cheap Trick! The Dictators! The Motors! Ultravox! The Stranglers!) as he was with extra promo records that BCN had received, and I was a grateful and fortunate recipient of both.

By the age of 20, Jimmy was the Music Director at WBCN. Six years later, he was gone - the first AIDS victim who'd gone to my high school (but sadly not the last). But his influence during those formative high school years has stayed with me to this day, and the bands he introduced me to remain among my all-time favorites.

As I wrote three years ago, there have been countless times that I've wished Jim was still here so I could tell him about a great new record I'd heard, or he could tell me about his new favorites. I'm thankful that I can go on the radio every week and share my favorites with you - and if you like what you hear, take a moment to say "thanks" to Jimmy Mack for shaping my musical taste for a lifetime.

Not entirely coincidentally, this Sunday, Oct 18, is the 23rd (I think) 22nd annual Jimmy Mack March To Defeat AIDS, organized by the Martin Luther King Action Project at my old high school, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional HS in Sudbury Mass. (See more info here and here.)

I hope you'll consider making a donation to support this cause; checks (made out to MLKAP: Jimmy Mack March) can be mailed to:

Listener comments!

  Tue. 10/13/09 11:07pm G:

nice change from two hours of that plinky fender rhodes bed music...
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:09pm dave:

oh man oh man. i can NOT hear 'loretta' without just singing along at the top of my lungs.

  Tue. 10/13/09 11:12pm Laurie:

Evan, this is a very nice tribute to your friend.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:17pm Amanda:

Yes, a really sweet gesture. Judging from these first few songs, I'd have paid close attention to Jim's opinions too.

(And happy WFMU-nniversary, EFD!)
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:19pm efd:

hi everyone, nice to see you all - thanks for the comments! Glad you're enjoying this set.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:19pm Jessica:

What Laurie said. I'm going to see if I can't pull together some kind of gesture donation, just 'cause I can think of far too many high schools for which yours sets such a sterling example. In times as trying as these, locally, that sort of hope gets my investment.
This is not the first show started off with 'Elo Kiddies,. in my experience. But that experience is just mine: I hit "play", on iTunes, marvelled at that awesome start, then went "hm" as the reset of the set was Cheap Triick on shuffle.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:20pm bjrn:

yeah! just heard the prong cover of this song today!
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:25pm efd:

stay tuned for a Stranglers story that I've probably told before, and am going to tell again.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:26pm Spoony:

Pastiche! This was on Terre's Black Cherries comp last year. I fell in love with it instantly.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:28pm Mike Sin:

I like this gesture for your fallen friend -- Nice job, bro.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:28pm efd:

it's funny, Spoony, I almost put that on *my* premium CD too!
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:28pm seang:

listening in from Boston, love elo kiddies, thanks for the tunes!
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:30pm Andy Zax:

Pastiche single: unreal! And now John Foxx Ultravox? You're on fire! (Got any Doctors of Madness?)
Tue. 10/13/09 11:32pm Pete in LA:

did I miss the strangles' story?
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:33pm Spoony:

Don't think that your comps aren't The Haymaker.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:40pm osvi:

Wassup EFD? Nice to see you still hold down this slot. Cool. The perfect grooves for this rainy ass day in the NorCal...
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:41pm Mad Dog:

Long shot, but as you talk L. Cohen's "Memories" keeps jumping into my head.. could it jump into the set somewhere? (I'd play it here but I lack a copy of Death of a Ladies Man at the moment..)
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:42pm Butthead:

Totally cool track, Beav, hehehehe
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:43pm Jessica:

It's impossible not to sing along to this, tho.
It helps if [you're 11, and] skating at the latenight rink one suburb up the highway where everyone thinks you're exotic. And you're high on oregano.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:44pm Jessica:

I l o v e that portrait of Jim McIntyre with his mom. She looks like simply the best.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:50pm efd:

thanks Jessica, I'm glad I found that pic.

Mad Dog, I appreciate the comment and the sentiment behind it, but not really feeling Mr. Cohen just now.
  Tue. 10/13/09 11:57pm Dromedary:

Hump Time!
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:00am G:

Gimel's from the Hebrew alphabet. Maybe the others too...
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:00am AZ:

"gimel" = 3rd letter of the Hebrew alphabet
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:03am OMG!:

Our personal information??? Do we have to give measurements?
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:04am dave:

yeah, the album tracks are named in order of the hebrew alphabet, from the looks of it, one track for each letter.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:16am Pete:

Listener Pete here. I saw the Fresh & Onlys in Chicago a few weeks ago and they told me they will have a 2-CD record out on In The Red in January. They have over 90 songs to record! Pretty Amazing!
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:20am john:

Hey Evan! Great opening set (which I missed entirely)! Go Angels!
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:21am efd:

thanks for the Hebrew alphabet help, guys! Pete, thanks for the Fresh & Onlys info - did you hear their live set earlier today?

John - Go Angels indeed.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:24am A:

I believe that's pronounced NO Angels. Or else Angels Go! Home!
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:26am dave:

bad judgement? there's no bad version of 'window pane', and i'll stomp anyone who says otherwise. and noel gallagher will help.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:27am dustin:

i need a couch
Wed. 10/14/09 12:27am Michael from the Left Coast:

I just got here--what was the gimel reference?
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:28am dustin:

sorry had to throw that out there as I stare at my empty living room. I just sold my couch on craigslist.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:29am A:

Michael: Apparently we're code-sourcing the next Dan Brown here. No, actually it's the Soul Junk album, which features Hebrew letters as part of its song titles.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:31am A:

Whoops. Code=crowd. And A=sleep.
Wed. 10/14/09 12:31am Michael from the Left Coast:

I thought there was some reference perhaps to the old Jewish expression "Since the year gimel" which is slang for since the dawn of time.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:34am efd:

hey, anyone who's reading this who's also on Twitter: please tweet @mrdavehill and tell him I'm playing Valley Lodge!
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:34am A:

Well, I'm pretty sure the original lyrics for Midnight at the O featured "put your gimel to bed," which leads in a wholly different direction.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:39am Joshua K:

Ok I tweetered but it might be too late?
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:40am john:

Puts rather a different cast on the Ramones' Gimel Gimel Shock Treatment, too.
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:44am Joshua K:

Mr Dave Hill twiterated and said hes listening
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:46am rockin robin:

tweet tweedley deet, tweet tweet
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:49am efd:

oy, the alphabet puns!

Josh, thanks for tweeting!
  Wed. 10/14/09 12:58am bennyb:

Slick rick in the house!
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:11am Sybil:

Greeting all,

Wonderful sets tonight efd (mos def!),

I've been replacing blown fuses here. (Not your fault: I was using a space heater and popping corn at the same time. Which is apparently a no-no for my apartment's 1920s wiring...)
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:19am efd:

Thanks Sybil, good to hear from you! I've blown fuses trying to run two space heaters at once, but popping corn is a new one!
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:24am Laurie:

Was this song written by the Duggar patriarch?
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:38am efd:

Laurie, I know you were talking about the name song but I don't get it.
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:38am W:

Where are these guys from? (echobelly)
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:38am Joe B:

wow, I was thinking I need to pick up this song ... then I looked at the playlist, and realized I already have this Echobelly CD - twice! I think I have a problem.
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:39am W:

I detected an accent.
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:41am efd:

W, pretty sure they're from the UK but beyond that I'm not sure.

Joe, maybe you can pick up a third copy at the record fair!
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:44am Joe B:

It's on my list!
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:48am wow:

I call intervention!
  Wed. 10/14/09 1:53am Joshua K:

I miss Hova on the air.
  Wed. 10/14/09 2:00am Joe:

World class show tonight! World class I says!
  Wed. 10/14/09 2:01am Joshua K:

Catch ya laters EFD. Good show.
  Wed. 10/14/09 8:42am grape:

Thanks for playing Bang - great track
  Tue. 10/20/09 6:34pm Jon McIntyre:

Jimmy Mack's younger brother here. Thanks, Evan, for the tribute and the memories. I also received a few of those promotional LPs which 'BCN had no need for!

It's good to get a little taste of what my brother was up to way back then. Thanks.
  Mon. 10/18/10 5:30pm Kathleen Moore:

It's great to see your tribute, Evan. It seems so unfair that Jim's not around to dive into contemporary culture with the Internet and social media to aid him. He would have LOVED this age of manic information swapping.
  Wed. 10/21/15 9:08pm Steven Gallanter:

I met Jim through Seth Deitch and Warren Senders in 1977 and got to know him when I hitchhiked up to Boston during the Summer of Sam, My smallness ended our friendship but i have never forgotten Jim.
