Live performance and chat with Beyond the Pale (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Toronto may not seem to be a Klezmer breeding ground but Beyond The Pale pulls it off beautifully. Melding musical influences from a Jewish mandolin virtuoso, a Dutch-Canadian clarinetist to Serbians proficient on violin and accordion, it's more Jewish-Balkan twang than Klezmer. The ensemble includes Eric Stein (mandolin), Bret Higgins (bass), Martin van de Ven (clarinet), Milos Popovic (accordion), and Alexander Gajic (violin). Beyond The Pale dropped by to record a set for Irene and WFMU on a recent swing through NYC.

This is incredible!
  3:09pm
V K:

good afternoon, Irene.

glad to have u back this week.
  3:18pm
Listener James from Westwood:

Always remember fondly the late great FMU DJ Raymond Franks when I hear "Comme a la Radio." His show, and this tune — his intro music — are two of my earliest FMU memories.
  3:22pm
bryan:

off to a great start, as usual!
  3:24pm
GP:

Yeah, I could play like that, but I don't want to show off.

<damn> : )
  3:29pm
Hugh:

Hello Irene!
It' great to hear you on the airwaves again! Aren't the high Rockies beautiful this time of year? (are 'airwaves' too last century?)
  3:37pm
nrk:

kinda strange to pick Django, a Belgian, to commemorate the French

and if you troubles to pronounce french, just listen bit better to the song
  3:50pm
Irene:

Well, I think of Django as being an honorary Frenchman, playing with Stephane Grappelli and the Hot Club of France. As for pronunciation, it's just a mental block. I'm getting a little better (I hope).
  3:59pm
Carmichael:

Hi Irene, hi everyone.
  4:02pm
stingy d:

hey carmichael, there's a scott walker dvd that just came out. i bought and watched it yestaday. not great. but its worth a look for sure. and scott walker is great as if we didn't know already.
  4:07pm
Carmichael:

No kidding? Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out. I was just playing the Walker Brothers yesterday during our BBQ.
  4:18pm
Irene:

Hey Hugh! If you (or any listener) are curious to see pictures of what I did in Aspen, go to my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/irene_trudel/
It was gorgeous, to say the least. By tomorrow I hope to post my pics of WFMU's broadcast from Midsummer Night Swing last Friday night.
  4:24pm
Joy:

What's that old French song you played around 3:25? It sounded like a very old recording. I loved it.
  4:32pm
Irene:

Most likely it was Edith Piaf singing "Mon Couer Est Au Coin D'une Rue. "
