I carry a TV-B-Gone (see "Empowerment at the click of a button" at the top of the page) much of the time, and using it has taught me a lot about TV and its hold over people. I recommend it highly.

Woodstcck Al ate the brown acid, i guess
  4:58pm
G:

Dude *is* the brown acid.
  4:58pm
Uncle Remus:

Cop tasers Granny
  4:59pm
Lizardner Dave:

You know while I agree with the TV B-Gone in principle, in reality the simple answer is don't go to a bar that has a TV if you don't want to deal with it. I've been on both sides of the fence - sometimes you want to watch a game in a bar because of the fun atmosphere, and sometimes you just want to talk. Pick the venue appropriate to your desire and no purchase is necessary.

Hmmm, that's probably far too reasonable an approach for our time, isn't it?
  5:00pm
Larry Fine:

I was there, I said - "Don't eat the brown acid you facocta shnooks"!
  5:01pm
Billy West:

Larry's right, you know.
  5:02pm
Dave B in NYC:

Amanda is the best.
  5:03pm
Cecile:

That would be nice in theory, Lizardner Dave.
Except the latest trend where I live is to put TVs everywhere...
  5:05pm
Marshall Stacks:

I use it rarely. The first time, I was in a restaurant with live music -- and the staff had put on the TV, too. So the poor guitarist was struggling to hold his audience.

Shazam... TV-B-Gone!

No one asked to have it turned back on.
  5:06pm
Cecile:

Yes, I see using it as a precise surgical tool only when absolutely neccessary...
  5:08pm
Spence:

I'll show you my best recipeeeeeeeeeeees
  5:12pm
Gumbercules:

Billy West? I love that guy!
  5:20pm
Lizardner Dave:

Actually, I'd like a version of TV-B-Gone that could be used to lower jukeboxes, bands and DJs in some places. Not turn off, just lower so you don't wind up with a blazing headache and a sore throat from trying to have a conversation.

Of course, if you're at a music-dedicated venue you should keep your mouth shut but they haven't made a remote control for humans. Yet.
  5:22pm
Cecile:

that sounds pretty good to me, LD.
  5:25pm
Marshall Stacks:

How about Cellphone-B-Gone?
  5:25pm
Ike:

Yeah, LD, great idea -- I need one of those for a great Lebanese restaurant in Clifton with an annoying singing DJ. He's a VERY LOUD one-man band.

I love that Metric song except that some of the lyrics are weirdly childish and annoying and get stuck in my head all day.
  5:26pm
G:

Muzak B Gone. natch.
  5:27pm
Irwin:

Ike, you started me on that Metric album. Your legacy.
  5:29pm
Writers:

He's right, actually.
  5:30pm
Ike:

I know. Now I'm owning up to the lyrical earworm that I spread. The goofiness of "Who would you rather be, the Beatles of the Rolling Stones?" (or maybe that should be double-quotation-marked) echoes in my head all day so hopefully it won't also echo in everybody else's.
  5:32pm
Cake and Pie:

Honey, we aint so bad either.
  5:32pm
Cookies:

She's right, actually.
  5:33pm
Ike:

Oops, that's "or." Not "of."

Ellison sometimes reminds me of Amy Goodman: Making good points, but too strident, or maybe even astringent, for heavy consumption.
  5:34pm
cosmic:

cheers bad ronald, yeah, long time! started a business so ive been busi-nesskeep the amanda comin irwin!
  5:34pm
Cookies:

We're for heavy consumption.
  5:34pm
Lizardner Dave:

Me want cookies too.
  5:36pm
cosmic:

just dropped my f-ing laptop. damage assesment
  5:37pm

It's kind of a secret, but I do M-F duet albums. Call my people.
  5:52pm
Ari:

Amanda could really enunciate "SQUEEZE MY LEMONS"
  5:52pm
Lizardner Dave:

I'd like to hear Amanda mixed over this calypso record. It sounds great in my head.
  5:56pm
happy listener:
