hi folks, happy mom day. yes, these are audio letters to and from ethel and her family from may 1968 while she was at a fat farm in durham, NC. found these on the street many years ago and the professor (of audio kitchen fame) cleaned 'em up.
  7:15pm
Jeff M:

The saga of Ethel continues, and we get more clues about why she's away.

It's all oddly compelling, and quite the snapshot of a family and a culture and a time.
  7:17pm
rachel jensen:

Jeff M:

I was wondering if the Rice Diet program existed as long ago as 1968... looks as if it started in 1939, so that may be where Ethel was!

Jeff M:

And completely off the topic of this evening's fabu music: earlier today I was chatting with Mr. Jones about how, a few weeks back, both you and Vin Scelsa had featured a Jimmy Durante song within the same week. Must've been a zeitgeist thing. And that got me to thinking about how most of the Kids Today might not immediately recognize Durante's voice, or have a notion of who he was -- which got me to musing about things like, in particular, the Ed Sullivan Show, the latter few years of which were still on while I was a nipper. And that was such an amazing, weird, wonderful bridge between the the culture of vaudeville and the stuff which was happening in the sixties.

Made me think Kids Today are the poorer for not having that background, but of course I bet that's what incipient codgers have always thought for their own reasons.
  8:33pm
miketp:

monica show only show i listen live on the internet. all others on the el radio
  8:33pm
tommy:

oh true that
  8:33pm

  8:34pm
G.:

tommy -- When I'm working online, I usually keep playlist etc. in my tray, and listen via broadcast (I'm in the NYC metro area) -- which also saves FMU on bandwidth costs... But listening online is totally fine if that's what works for people, and in some situations is the only option...
  8:34pm
texas scott:
