A visit with Christopher Blenkinsop, Kiki Sauer and Dirk Trageser of 17 Hippies, the defiantly acoustic band from techno-mad Berlin that was drawn to the music of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin wall. 17 Hippies will be in NYC on Monday January 12 at the Highline Ballroom playing a world music showcase in conjunction with APAP, the annual Arts Presenters Conference along with Mamadou Diabate, Rob Curto’s Sanfona and Vagabond Opera. (Rock Family Tree note: Founding / current bandmember Lutz Ulbrich and sometime collaborator Harald Grosskopf are members of the legendary Krautrock band Ash Ra Tempel. )

Listener comments!

  7:06pm john:

Great stuff reminds me of Devotchka
  7:08pm John:

Thanks for showing me something new !
  7:11pm Your DJ:

Yes, in a way it's the same kinda thing; most of these guys are rock musicians who then became interested in Eastern European music rather than growing up with it, and they continue to mix in other styles - although the members of 17 Hippies are quite a bit older.
  7:12pm JOhn:

Im from Denver and used to roadie for Devotchka and now work for a band Called everything absent or distorted
  7:14pm John:

Thanks for the different flavors
  8:10pm scott:

As it's a bit slow on the comments tonight, I'll just chip in here and say this is still my favourite show on WFMU. Keep up the good work, and happy holidays!
  8:11pm steve:

That Woody Guthrie was nice. Luvd' it.
  8:43pm katie:

always good to hear the fiddles, especially with the winter wonderland outside.
  8:44pm Your DJ:

Wonderland?
  8:50pm katie:

yes, a land of wonder - just ask Noodles.
if you release an xmas record you can't complain about caroling.
  8:09pm alan t:

  6:10pm China Clipper:

I am a long time fan of the hippies. Thanks of giving me the chance to enjoy them again and get to know something about the background of some songs.
