Live performance by That Thing Over There
Mega-improvisational/electronica ensemble That Thing Over There, as guitarist Ian Smit describes them, "creates little spontaneous compositions, or at least attempts to, which are cloaked in the ambient /trippy /world beat gone astray realm. The players for this performance are two members of Monkeyworks: Smit on guitar/loops/alterations, and Steve Meltzer on electronic percussion. They are joined by Richie Arlington (Einstein's Music Fair) and Barry Leaman on similar, but certainly personalized instrumentation, respectively. They all have more toys and make more of a racket than should be allowed! The music should be lite, heavy, dark, and the other light! Yep, that about covers it."

Listener comments!

  3:07pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

Cloudland Canyon is making me wish I was out somewhere in a cloudland canyon.
  3:57pm fred:

Don't sweat it Irene, for those who know about him, Getatchew is more than enough to drop everything and get there. Others should heed the call and just get there and hear this living legend, the guy's not getting any younger, so now's the time, people. I saw him last year with the Ex, and that was a capital-E Event. I already booked my ticket for their Paris gig in September, and to anyone who stood in awe at a The Ex gig: it's even better, see GW Sok stand in awe for a change, and for good reason.
  4:23pm north guinea hills:

  4:25pm hand sonic bender:

  4:49pm north guinea hills:

  4:56pm north guinea hills:

  4:56pm FJ Torres:

  5:16pm FJ Torres:

I was into it. You should record a couple pieces like that.
  5:17pm FJ Torres:

I was thinking- "These guys also do noise! Cool!"
  5:18pm Doug:

I just walked out - whats this?
  5:18pm 4'33:

i was actually into it as well and it sent my opinion of the group even higher!
  5:24pm Irene:

Oops! Caught me! I was intent on getting a couple of pics of the guys and ran out of the studio as soon as it started. It did have a kind of an ambient stereo quality to it...
  5:47pm G:

For about five minutes I was wondering if it was really really experimental, or if the transmitter had gone out !
  10:04pm c2677:

i'm reading all these comments first, before listening to the archive. this sounds like an awesome show, as ususal, but with a twist.
  10:24pm Steve:

Steve here from TTOT...thanks to all who posted and listened. The disc with ambient data noise was an FMU effup. Sorry.
  8:42am Irene:

Yep! Steve is right. WFMU's crummy consumer-model CD players won't play some CD-Rs. They've caused me the occasional on-air embarrassment. Sorry guys!
  4:56pm leaman:

So wonderful to play to an actual audience! We can share music with all of you soon... ++0+ will have a myspace page posted with downloads this week... so sorry that I wasn't ready for actual interest in what we do. PS to Sonic Boom... my wife said about your comments "Someone knows who Microstoria is besides you? Wow!" Interest from anybody that wishes to sleep around with us (in a musical way) is perfectly welcome and perfectly normal. You may check out http://coloringpad.blogspot.com/ to find my new page, and I will be posting any/all music I am involved with there. Until the future...
  12:04pm Geek:

Sounds like yams on ice
