Listener comments!

  9:25am Wes:

Buenos dias. Just had a delicious Mexican feast earlier this week at my local cantina, complete with jumbo texas margarita to wash it all down. (sadly they had no monster texas margarita) Unfortunately, they had terrible country karaoke instead of GOOD music like this. I sat outside.
  9:36am Frank:

Wonderful, as usual. Anyway to play something, anything from Perez Prado???

Love that Bumblin' bee! buzz me up!
  9:39am Pamela:

Mornin' from DC. Got any good fiddlin' music?
  9:39am pat:

from DC too, I think we're on the right track right now. Keep the resonator guitars coming...
  9:47am ?:

kudos from barcelona, spain
  9:48am Paul Sherratt:

A Lightnin' strike !
  9:52am Paul Sherratt:

" ? " from Barcelona .. leave some cds in that Discos & Baladas store for me ...
  10:00am krex:

mmm cooooooooooookies
  10:02am Scott:

If not for teh internets, I wouldn't have WFMU. I discovered it one day while sitting in the parking lot of a donut shoppe. And thats the only place on Long Island where WFMU comes in.
  10:03am Frank:

Good morning from Charleston, SC, shrimp'n grits for breafast anyone?
  10:05am Matt:

Shrimp and grits would be great now....sounds like it would be really good for a hangover.
  10:07am holly:

hey doug
listen live every friday
the best day of the week
holly from hamburg
  10:13am Pamela:

I'll take the grits... mmmm... would love some. Shrimp I could leave behind.
  10:14am Doug:

Pass the green sauce and I'm in!
  10:17am Wes:

Catfish and scrambled eggs isn't bad, either, or smoked salmon and eggs. I tell you what, the Rock Crushers had a fantastic sound, loving that tone! Really digging this set, daddy-o.
  10:20am david harrold:

Very well said regarding your impromptu commentary re: On Demand, its lifestyle which is the custom, And the affirmation for everything GREAT at wfmu __ like the advice about the random archive generator. I'm still getting to know my way around here. I believe it's only been about 4 days but I've been just diggin it to the virtual addiction. This is the best I've ever known. THANKS HEAPS from dave in new zealand [Amer. ex pat]
  10:27am Doug:

Hey David! Welcome to WFMU, where expectations get lovingly confounded. Glad to know you're now lost with the rest of us...
  10:34am pat:

huevos rancheros, black beans, rice, hot tortillas, shot of tequila, and a Tecate...
  10:43am Paul Sherratt:

Huevos Rancheros .. haven't heard them in a while !
  10:48am Doug:

There's an unassuming burrito joint in El Cerrito that almost had me moving to Cali a few years back. How come no one seems to get the tortilla just right in New York? (I guess it's like expecting a halfway decent bagel anywhere else.) Sigh.
  10:52am ?:

try an spanish breakfast: spanish tortilla (potato omelette) plus coffee or beer, depending on your risk tendency...
  10:52am Paul:

Groovy drumbeat.
  10:53am Paul Sherratt:

Cough ... !

Also

Down Home Music Store, 10341 San Pablo Ave, El Cerrito.

Arhoolie !
  10:57am gary:

well that nails it, i'm off to get a pile of tacos after the set's over. Also really enjoyed that number by Carl Belew & His Rock Crushers. Bit more info on his early discography here: http://rcs.law.emory.edu/rcs/artists/b/bele1000.htm
  10:58am dave in vermont:

Albert Ayler deserves more air play all over the world.
  10:58am pat:

10-4 on the bagel comment, Doug--you CANNOT get a decent bagel in DC.
  11:01am north guinea hills:

Paul, try grand morrelos on grand and graham in williamsburg, or castros on myrtle near classon in clinto hill, the only mexican worth mentioning in nyc
  11:37am Pamela:

For the DC/VA crowd, I found good Mexican, in of all places, Strasbourg (Rt 55). Christina's Mexican Restaurant. Mostly the specials. And beautiful patio seating area - tons of plants/flowers.
  11:41am Bob DuCharme:

Cal Massey is certainly my pleasant surprise of the day. And it looks like emusic.com has that album!
  11:44am Sean Padilla:

This is the first time I've heard "Portrait of My Stepfather," and I'm holding back tears because of the memories that it brings back of my OWN childhood. This is seriously one of the greatest soul songs I've ever heard, and I'm going to track this album down IMMEDIATELY.
  11:46am Doug:

Cal Massey: Highly, highly recommended. Highly.
  11:50am Doug:

Sean,

  11:50am Wes:

Last time I was in NYC I had Mexican at a place in Spanish Harlem, fairly upscale, very spicy, quite good. Very little english spoken.
  11:53am Bill:

Lorraine Ellison - wow
  12:25pm Hugo:

Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia - from your intrepid correspondent - on the road again (from Bergen to Belgrade and back again). Shall dip into the archives upon return ...
  1:52pm JLB:

question about the show that i didn't get to ask earlier...i thought i heard you announce a song by Kelly shay hicks but i don't see it on the playlist...? and also, there was a fantastic funk instrumental tune that followed the hicks tune...what was that?
  2:27pm Doug:

JLB, that Kelli Shay Hicks song was not actually part of this morning's show. I was asked to go on a bit early to fill in for the previous shift. The last track I played before starting this show was Kelli Shay Hicks's "Cash and Carry" from her new record "Buck Again." To hear that tune, you can go to the archive of my 6/2/06 show (here it is: http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/19245). The funk instrumental is the opening theme of Give the Drummer Some: "Jujus: Alchemy of the Blues" by Sarah Webster Fabio. (See the very first entry at the top of this playlist page.)
  2:31pm JLB:

thanks for the info doug. very helpful indeed.
  3:48pm Skylar:

Bumble Bee Slim, Mooch Richardson,  Luke Jordan, Lightning Hopkins, J.B. Lenoir,  Big Bill Broonzy.

Thank you Doug great set.
  10:40pm Doug:

Hi Sky, as I've always said, it's better to come late to Mooch Richardson than not come at all. Mooch Lives!
  9:01am eric:

Who played "I be cold"?
  11:45am Doug:

Eric, "I Be Cold" was by Yusef Lateef off his amazing live Atlantic record "10 Years Hence." (I didn't add that track to my playlist because it didn't fall officially on my show. I was asked to jump in a bit early to help fill in for the previous slot.) Sorry for the confusion.
  6:15pm Rob:

No more filling in either side of your slot please. My stereo cornucopias are stuffed full of juicy tidbits already.
  10:29pm Doug:

Rob, I hear you. Horns of plenty, indeed!
