Yes, McGroovey, the prime time soap opera based on Grace Metalious's best selling novel lasted 514 episodes with Dorothy Malone, Barbara Parkins, Ed Nelson, Mia Farrow and Ryan O'Neal among others. My mother wouldn't miss it. And with our one-TV family, arguments ensued. I always lost. The daytime soap ("Return to Peyton Place") was on from '72 to '74 for 465 episodes. So the whole "Peyton Place" phenomenon was quite a big deal back then. The original theatrical film with Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Lloyd Nolan and Arthur Kennedy was a big hit as well. Wikipedia says Franz Waxman was responsible for the music on the primetime TV series, so I'm not sure what Randy Newman had to do with that except for the issuance of the Epic album that Joe played. America fell in love with that fictional New England town and its cast of sleazy characters.

A kind of pared-down sound (a five-piece if you count Doktor Avalanche) worked really well, though I miss the back-up singers sometimes. Played a lot of new stuff but mixed in enough of the old hits as well. I was very much in once "Ribbons" was the second song! Opener was A Primitive Evolution. Hey, I need to look for that bin and get me a copy of this.

I got the last album Dunedin Spleen when it came out, and accidentally bought two copies of it. I may have actually given the second copy to Handy. (If I didn't, I must still have the second copy?)

They are REALLY trying to cater to a very wide fanbase. Every show consists of what would fall on a greatest hits album gets played as well as a handful of new songs that have been kicking around and and a few deep cuts. Then there are about 4 or 5 spots in the set list that rotate at every show as R Smith has mentioned that he knows there are folks who go to multiple shows and he wants to give them something different. I myself will have partaken in three shows by the end of the tour.
