Bottom of the morning from Mexico city (its a bit after 7). NIce you're doing Braxton today, as I will be doing the same on my own radio show on Thursday. Instead, I'll touch upon his work over his lifetime. All works. Braxton performed here some years ago with Mary Halvorson and Taylor Ho Bynum. I recall taking him to the Zocalo in the center of the city.

Braxton/Crispell/Dresser/Hemmingway created some great music, but I especially like Braxton with Dave Holland and Barry Altschul as rhythm section. This basic trio augmented at various times by Sam Rivers, George Lewis or Kenny Wheeler produced Braxton's best work (as far as I'm concerned).

Listening to this recording has made me realize another issue I have with the Ghost Trance era — which I like but not as obsessively. I’d been thinking the problem was primarily rhythmic sameness but now I realize that dynamic sameness (compression) is at least as significant.
Both factors of course being part of THE POINT when you’re talking about trance.

“It does, however, feature a charming rarity on the second disc: an actual encore, the only one Braxton played on this tour. A brief run-through of "Composition 40(0)" led by a fleet spray-of-notes solo by Braxton and featuring some comping by Crispell in the manner of her hero Cecil Taylor, it's proof that avant-garde jazz needn't be difficult or forbidding.”

Let's see... I have a Mac Tower running OS9 that I keep for primarily this purpose. It's running Roxio Toast software. The key thing is a little piece of hardware called the Griffin PowerWave: it has RCA inputs but the output is USB. That is, instead of routing the analog signal through the computer's "mic in" jack, the sound is routed through USB and thus eliminates ground loop hum.

If I were doing it today, I wouldn’t need to purchase the CDR authoring software. There’s plenty of freeware for editing audio. So really the only expense is something to eliminate the hum. There’s probably a newer gizmo that works fine (but I don’t know what it is). That’s what I’d search for.
The CD authorizing software is nice because I can make mixed data and audio CDR, and I can adjust the “countdown” gap between tracks. But the latter is an extra, not crucial. Ditto the former when CD drives are not standard for laptops anymore.
