This is the first episode that was broadcast, after the pilot, and where Candy was heard by a wider audience, too. Unfortunately, we don't have a complete run of Candy Matson, so we only get to hear a smattering of shows that happened to survive into the modern age.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm

This story - like a lot of Candy Matson stories - really shows it's San Francisco-ness, with a lot of place-names and local references of the era.

Hey Austin! This script is hilarious. “He was stone cold dead on Market” is a LOL reference to a calypso song “Stone cold Dead In the Market.”

"This mediocre dialog is getting us nowhere." Candy Matson really does enjoy making meta-references and breaking the fourth wall. Candy often references the announcer at the beginning, too.

While Candy Matson gets pretty dark at times, this show marries humor and a touch of romance in a way that a lot of detective shows never did.

The "Live Organ" in Candy Matson was a creative choice to save money while making the show. In 1949, you COULD fully produce a show with music cues and sfx, but you needed a modern studio, which wasn't always available to just anyone. So they decided to make Candy "live," with live organ and sfx. This is also probably why there aren't many surviving into the modern age: there weren't transcription discs made, so ones that do exist where home-made.

Oh yeah. And actually same with hard boiled/noir films and fiction. Again, just saw lots of parodies on things like tv variety shows- the guy in the trench coat and fedora, sultry dame, sax music, etc. Until i read Raymond Chandler and was like holy crap, this is the greatest, why is everyone making fun of it?

I reverse-engineered my interest in noir. I loved Roger Rabbit as a teen, and soon enough, found Hammett and Chandler at the library, looking for something else like that. But it's the same with music: we hear the covers, and eventually find the originals. It just takes time.

Candy is the best. I like that she drinks, and smokes, and makes her own way at a time when most people expected her to be married, and as described in the pilot, she dresses however she wants. He was mistaken for a "Lady of the Night" by one bartender.

I wonder if anyone has written a cultural history of the organ. It was called the King of Instruments, and it really was: radio soundtracks, church, skating rinks, classical, EZ, Voxx for the rockers, Hammond for jazz and soul, baseball (and other) games…are today’s kids even familiar with organs?

The coded gay sidekick is astonishing for a late 40's radio show. I still haven't found anything else that has a character like that from that same era. I think I can safely say he's the first gay man in old radio dramas, who is represented positively, and not just the butt of jokes.

This story appeared at least twice on Dimension X, and was a fan favorite. For this version of the story, some scenes were re-done and re-written, and since this was a few years later, the music cues and sfx are a little better than before.

The original story - Mars is Heaven - is a Ray Bradbury story. But this version was adapted by Earnest Kinoy, who did a lot of work for Dimension X, and X-Minus-1, and was a Sci-Fi author on his own. But he did a lot of great work writing for radio.

This is the fourth episode of seven in this "trial" run of episodes, as first commissioned by NBC in 1955. The show would be so successful, that one month later, NBC would pick up the show in a continuous manner, for a number of years afterwards. Some stations actually aired re-runs in local markets, keeping that time slot alive in the minds of listeners. (Some stations, that had kept their old Dimension X discs, ran some of those, instead.)
