Also of interest to WFMU international music lovers: Knoedel has a new release "aufschnaiter:in" There seems to be a lot of dialog in it, though. Their 2019 release, "Still (kaum etwas endet so,wie es anfängt)" is much more like the Knoedel of the 90s.

yarp, missed so much of Kyrgyzstan I almost ended up in Tajikistan (actually, most of the border/power disputes are w/ Uzbekistan. If you really want to see some boder gore leftover from the Russian Empire (the Soviets didn't address it), look no further then the counter-enclaces and exclaves here. Only Bangledesh and India had it worse, but they finally patched theirs up in 2019.)

i did research on this kind of music in undergrad, mainly the kazakh variety. looked at how soviet authorities tried to influence bards & other folk traditions to spread propaganda promoting soviet leaders & policies

Tuvan & mongolian songs have even more similarities to cowboy songs imo. all coincidental of course, they happened to have similar lifestyles as pastoral nomads in an open plain, yodeling & throat singing alike sound pretty in an open country & can be used to communicate over long distances. both also took inspiration from the clip-clop clip-clop rhythm of a horse
