I like how Dan sort of flexes toward the librarian, and gets what he wants. The power of authorship!

This episode aired the day before the 4th of July. The 3rd was a Sunday, so it's likely that most people would have the 4th (and possibly the 5th) off from work, depending on how lenient your boss was. So I suspect people listening were enjoying their long summer weekend.

Austin Rich:

This episode sticks out for me, and I do recall hearing it originally, thinking it was pretty clever. Radio, of course, is the perfect way to tell a story for a Blind Listener. I also like the conceit of the secret message, that only another blind person could receive. It's a nice way to sneak a message out to someone.

We have a grand prize available this week, too. Which I will announce in hour two. But for a $75 donation to WFMU in this show's name, you can get this Grant Prize Package!

I'm trying to imagine an era where this kind of inspection would seem perfectly normal.

Not too late to make a $20 donation, where you can get the Mutants album as your reward.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Austin Rich:

Also available on CD, for a $20 donation, is the new Kid Congo Powers album, "Live in St. Kilda." Backed by "The Near Death Experience," this is the Australian "pick-up" band that backs Kid Congo when he's touring there. A steal at twice the price, it can be yours for $20!

@Austin do you do any clean up to your recordings or are they as is? Just courious
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
Austin Rich:

↳ joe @9:51
I do! I usually try to do a little EQ, boost the levels, and if I can, run some noise reduction over it. I can only do so much, and some recordings are already great. But later, when I get to Dimension X, you'll hear one I did a lot more work on, than normal.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:55pm

Yeah. I can only imagine that none of them have ever actually held a monkey wrench, and doesn't know how that would kill someone, easily.

-Sun Ra “Prophet”

Grab em before they disappear as quickly as The Mutants album did!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Austin Rich:

That line - "You good with socks, Ginny?" - must have been improvised. I know that Bogart did improvise occasionally on scripts, and often moreso when he's had a drink or two. But you can usually spot the improvs, as they have a sort of "Bogart-ness" to them that stick out.

True! I'm impressed when they talk about how much he drank. I would never be able to act the way he does if I were that sauced.

$20 is actually a little cheaper than it would cost you to order either the Sun Ra album, or the Kid Congo Powers album. So save some dough, and make a donation to your favorite radio station in the process!

Does this sound like the 1990 everyone remembers?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm

The source recording for this particular episode - like many of the last episodes of Dimension X - sound terrible. I did my best to clean it up... it's not great, but it's much better than it was before.

My friends and I always referred to 1974 as the Golden days, for sure, back in 90.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm

Of course! It was the style at the time. Robots caused so much trouble in the 90's.

The crashed my field hockey game that one time. Had to hit em with our sticks to continue the match.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Austin Rich:

This story has a quality that a lot of Dimension X stories have: the assumption that all men are unhappy in their marriages. A lot of sci-fi from this era seems to reflect that... which I assume was merely the POV what the writers imagined marriage was like.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Austin Rich:

I miss the "exact duplicate of humans" tech we used to have back in the 90's. I wonder what happened to that stuff?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Unless we get another big for the Grand Prize this show - The Norton Record Tote Bag - Then we have a winner for that prize, too. And: the Kid Congo Powers CD is still available! $20, and it's yours!
