Is "Karl" one syllable?
Or maybe it's two?

Speech variations like that is the only reason I have to really think on haiku to count syllables right. Admittedly Japanese has more distinct syllables, so can flow more naturally.

Some of us studied it in school (like myself), others are German (Guido of Cologne), but I think mostly because it's association with harsh, expressionist, contrasting and idealist art, music, film, etc. The first gasp of the "post-Modern", still in the "Modern" period. Definitely in sync with many listeners' artistic inclinations.

One thing's for sure, that was perhaps easier to accomplish back then - if you're in a creative waterfall, just KEEP RECORDING and issuing albums! (Like CCR during the triple album year 1969). Don't release albums every 3 years so you can record, tour, do movies, etc. If you've got the creativity, SPILL IT OUT while you got it!
