I got Smash Hits when it was first released in 1969. It came with a poster of Jimi, Noel and Mitch dressed as desperados on horseback on a ramshackled western street. I had it taped to closet door in my bedroom. Years later, when I was a set dresser, I worked for a famous commercial photographer. We did a homage at the Warner Brothers backlot on Laramie Street for Sports Illustrated with a bunch of cowboys in in/on/in front of a pick-up truck. IT WAS THE SAME DAMNED STREET! Full circle for me.

Okay ...so :

b.) & what is the Statement ? Is it Relevant ?
As with visual Special Effects in Movies - Analog means Hand Made, & Digital too often means Push Button.
If made by Hand - you've got something Different & Human every time almost.

That's exactly the thing with Gittar ! Bach did not Write for Gittar. He wrote for Cello & Lute. They're in the Classical Western tradition. Gittar ...Romanian Gypsys ? Who knows ! It always was what it is now. Which is great.

no doubt...no question the fretboard was a later idea. and the harp would've had just a few strings, if not only one.

The Diddley Bow has been mentioned. (From which obviously BoDiddley took his name.) That was when African-American sharecroppers took like a broom wire & nailed it into their shacks, & played it like a slide with a bottle or something. A lot of Blues masters say they started like that !

is that the diddley bow,Rabbit? i've read the term used for other "primitive" stringed instruments...homemade guitars/banjos out of repurposed items... and that referred to as simply a "one-stringed slide" or one-string barn slide

ngh @1143 well, yeah! i mean, i don't think they had metal wire, or nylon string... but then, catgut/sinew (sp?) is extremely durable and a reusable instrument might've been made 10,000 years ago

i think it's more keeping the 'strings' keeping its elasticity and tautness, as well as the durability of the frame (and keeping it from warping, etc).

Pianos with all those Strings have a metal skeleton. Prior to that - Pianos imploding int the middle of the night was not unusual. First thing a Gittarist does is look down the neck to see if its Warped or not. Serious business.
