I find a well done PG-13 movie to be scarier than an R movie. R's rely on being gratuitously violent and gory (which I love). But PG-13 relies on all the other cinematic elements. If you can spook me with a PG-13 you're a master of horror.

i only watch horror movies for the entertainment and/or camp value. The 'scary' parts do nothing for me. I get more scared watching a well written movie w/ great character development to where you might have some empathy for some of the characters' outcomes....(yes, i'm that boring).

I saw The Exorcist (director’s cut) with the deleted scene when they rereleased it in theaters. I saw it in DC (2000-01) and was still disturbed by the film, especially the deleted scene. Honestly, a timeless artifact of horror.

One of most disturbing thing I remember seeing was Through a Glass Darkly by Ingmar Bergman. I was asleep on the sofa. When I woke up Karin the mentally deranged female lead was having a spiritual hallucination. She imagined some helicopters were ascending angles and was crying tears of joy. That seriously freaked me out.

Blood Quantum and The Only Good Indians are coming from similar places. Absolutely devastating.

Always say I'm into SciFi & Kaiju (Giant Monsters) & not Horror. But then I realize I've always been pretty much about Monster Movies - & the Monster Kid Radio podcast made me realize I identify as a Monster Kid. Much as one id's as Rawker culturally, for example. So - that's splitting hairs with Horror ...I say I'm sensitive & suggestible - & being Disturbed is not my interest. Than also the book 'The Monster Show: A Cultural History of Horror' by David J. Skal - which gives exposition to how the Imagery in Horror @ different times reflects what is in the social ~ collective subconscious then. The World Wars & Horror have a specific relation, for instance. As did the Depression.
...& that aspect of it fascinates & draws me in.
He also posits that Horror serves some 'function' this way - if not actually a total Catharsis - as an ideal Theatre, or Therapeutic or Spiritual process might.
But reading what you all say here - particularly as per the Literature - I wonder if I can stretch that to really fit the facts ?
What interests you in Horror, really ? The imagination of Authors was mentioned...

I pretty much watch only horror movies. Almost every "theatrically" released movie out there is about either the bourgeoisie and their desperate need to reinforce the family-as-locus-of-capitalism or about reinforcing the power of the state through spectacle. I find horror to be the only genre that goes around asking questions and probing at all the bits of our unconscious that we're afraid to poke at. That is, it does stuff, and most movies just want to turn brains off. I mean, I like The French Connection as much as the next guy, and Gene Hackman is up there in the greatest Americans convo, but why do we care about finding the heroin?

Let's just say that the zombies are nowhere near the point of 28 Days Later. And that's why 28 Weeks Later is just crap.
