Nice Ornette-this I know electric, Prime Time, nice to hear it in acoustic style.
Avatar 🦀 10:55am
Listener Gregory:

It is interesting to me that Ornette in most of the 20th century seemed to be admired (by some), but you couldn't see much direct influence on the music. Then it was like a switch was thrown—maybe a new generation?—and you started to hear others play his music and music clearly influenced by him all over... even Branford Marsalis and other mainstream stalwarts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that's a very interesting point, @LG. We had to have more time to catch up to Ornette?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:57am
DJpeterDE:

@LG i wonder if Stanley Crouch had anything to do with it. Alongside the expected influences, Wynton incorporated a lot of Don Cherry’s phrasing. Wynton‘s best quality IMO
  10:58am
Dean:

Does Ornette use the theme from Rite of Spring, or were ADK adding that?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:59am
DJpeterDE:

Crouch basically recuperated Ornette for neocons is what I’m saying. Emphasized that he played forms not free form. Pointed out that there are “rhythm changes” on Shape of Jazz to Come
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:59am
doctorjazz:

Hey, @Dean.

@DJpeter: where/when does Crouch do that? In the Voice?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:02am
DJpeterDE:

Let me go looking… Wynton definitely does, in an interview
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:04am
doctorjazz:

Gary Giddens also champoined Ornette, used to read him in the Voice regularly.
Would one say Trane was the way most jazzers found their way "out" early on? I do think Ornette was heard and influenced musicians, but mostly they didn't get much play. (would Ayler's sound be out of Ornette?). It took a long time for Cecil Taylor's playing to make its way into other free music as well.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:04am
DJpeterDE:

I’m finding lots of mentions actually. Here’s Branford
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:05am
WR:

I don't know that Ornette tune well enough to react. What else ya got (JK). And we did not buy bananas either but we are only two thirds through our shopping rounds.
Avatar 🦀 11:06am
Listener Gregory:

Yeah, I think Coltrane took up most of the oxygen in free jazz circles. Ornette's music also requires a closer group integration (I believe), which could be harder to achieve.
  11:06am
Dean:

Thanks, all. Here's the earliest review I find in Billboard, Dec. 8, 1958:

Something Else!
Altoist Ornette Coleman stars on this new release from the Contemporary label, and he displays a sensitive and interesting modern style; one that is warm and appealing in the current genre. The tunes in the collection are all Coleman's, written about five years ago. Coleman's style is distinctly his own but basic and emotional. Accompanying him on this LP are D. Cherry on trumpet, W. Norris on piano, D. Payne on bass and B. Higgins on piano [sic]. The group is much better than average, with Cherry a strong support. "Invisible" and "The Blessing" are worth hearing.

Hi Jeff and de OUTies!

Dean:

Here's George Lewis on Crouch on Coleman, Current Musicology, spring 2001:

In his regular monthly column in the now-defunct men's magazine Players (a kind of African American Playboy), Stanley Crouch, who performed on drums in several of the performances on "Wildflowers," reviewed the live performances that the recordings later documented. Crouch hailed the new music on these recordings as "significant for its variety, its craftsmanship, and finally, its often breathtaking beauty and clarity of its artistry." For Crouch, Hemphill was "masterful," while Mitchell's performance was "almost as exciting and great as anything I've heard from Coltrane, Rollins and Ornette Coleman" (Crouch 1977:6).

Just getting around here from chore-space. I've been reading, in succession, A.B. Spellman's "Four Lives In The Bebop Business" and John Litweiler's "Ornette Coleman: A Harmolodic Life" (nearly done with that). Both fine books, and they include a lot on the mutual influences flying around between those guys back in the day. Lots of quotes from 'back then' reviews, also. "Harmolodic Life" is out of print -- you'll have to sniff out a used copy, but "Four Lives" is easily available.

Steve Colman talking about Ornette's influence on Coltrane:
"First of all, there is no such thing as freedom. We’re human beings, we’re creatures of habit....
But the thing about structure is that you don’t get fooled thinking that you’re doing whatever you want to do. To me, Coltrane’s life is the perfect example of that. He used structure to get to a variety. The word I would prefer to use is not freedom but variety. So you can see that he was playing a certain way and he stumbled on certain kinds of structural things around the time he was doing that Giant Steps stuff, which he felt he needed to investigate. He definitely investigated them to a ridiculous degree. He did it on standards, he did it on originals. He got a lot of response from that. A lot of response from inside the music community itself. Even from the musicians in his band. Some people were saying, “man, why do we have to play all these chords?” Other people outside the group were saying, “well, you know, that’s kind of stiff, playing all these chords.” And other people dug it. He gave an interview where he said he was talking to Ornette Coleman. And Ornette Coleman said to him, “if you want to play all these chords, go ahead, but why do you have to impose that on the rhythm section?” And so he thought about that."

Listener Gregory:

Album covers are flashing before my eyes! So, this is how it all ends. My family warned me of this, if I didn't stop buying CDs.

Three, @DJpeter. One for the playlist stuff; one for playing the music, and one for the outgoing broadcast piece (this one is also recording a local safety copy of the show, just in case).

Loving the show, but gotta run. Thanks, Jeff!

Bye, @Doug, @doc, @mic_a!

Hello, Stork Club, coming up next over here: wfmu.org...

John in England:

Doug -- I thought Four Lives in the Bebop Business was the original (1966) title and Black Music: Four Lives was the later (1970) retitling.

This music all seems very... international. If we had no idea who was playing, would listeners detect the roots of Iberian music in these performances? Hints of fado or flamenco or something? I don't know enough about those genres to detect them if they're there, but someone here must.

Interesting. Now thinking of 'Lonely Woman' as a sort of Fado ...probly quite wrongly...

Jeff: thanks for the pick behind the curtain at the magic that is D:O Radio. I think I speak for everyone when I say: how come there as few technical glitches as there are! (I kid.)

@John in England! How the heck are you!

@Andrew in Toronto: thank you!

@LG: I did not sense any kind of Iberian roots either, as I listened.

@rw: Glad you stopped by (and got good sleep)!

I suspect that there is a more mainstream jazz scene that might incorporate Spanish or Portuguese roots more.

Jeff, I caught the bulk of the last hour in bits and pieces while getting up, etc. Thank you as always!

It appears that you are correct, John in England, but it gets more complicated. A 2004 "new" edition published by U. Mich Press notes on t.p. verso: Originally published under the title Four Lives in the Bebop Business by Pantheon Books. Later published as Black Music: Four Lives.

And yet the 2004 edition is title Four Jazz Lives.
