Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Who is singing this slowed-down version, does anyone know?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Zipperhead7:

This sounds like a Prince version that's been chopped and screwed

Avatar 8:11pm tim abdellah:

I Only Have Eyes For You - Jill probably remembers the Flamingos hit version from 1959. But it was already an oldie at that time: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Gary:

Wow, 1934
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right - & yet the Flamingo's version is practically psychedelic. In a spare way.

@RevRab - 100%!!!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Zipperhead7:

Always loved the Flamingos -- yes, RevRab, it sounds like a transmission from space

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Gary:

Would love an Explorer's Room Italian prog show ... good chance he's already done one
  8:33pm Dean:

Buddy of mine has a pretty extensive Italian prog LP collection. We were buying this stuff mid-'70s, when we had record store Meccas like Moby Disc in Van Nuys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Gary:

Nice, Dean!
Avatar 8:38pm CDToaster:

@Gary: Love your show and I think you have the coolest mom in the world. Appreciate her every single day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gary:

Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Columbus - 1492 - an Italian patronized by the Spanish...
Salient characteristics by you about Prog ! I always see it as after Psychedelia when people took Rawk *seriously* as Art - as Musicians & for Concepts...
Avatar 🇰🇷 8:39pm Listener Gregory:

Ms. Bodega is much more open-minded about this music than my mother would have been. I give her a lot of credit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ironic as I think the Osage sided with the white people often against other Nations...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...well - not that exactly :
en.wikipedia.org...
- more perhaps they were just in conflict with other Nations
- but notable murders by the whites happened for oil money & land as late as the 1920s apparently !
Avatar 🇰🇷 8:44pm Listener Gregory:

Gary, this is the very first music I have ever heard on your show that I actually own. I think you may be falling down on the job!
  8:44pm Dean:

My own "Mom reacts" story has to do with the Hair OST, which I acquired when I was 9 or 10. Playing on the family room record player, a track begins, "Sodomy, fellatio, cunnilingus..." and so forth. With moderate urgency my mom walks into the room from the kitchen. "What is that?!" "It's the Hair soundtrack, mom." "Oh...okay." And that was all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Gary:

Mom took my sister and me to see The Fantasticks, and I reminded her about that a few days ago, but she doesn't recall it
  8:47pm Jill B.:

Dean....I like to think that that was my attitude towards the music was listening to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Had a brother about nine years older went thru Hippe then Glam phases then was G.G. Allin's gittarist ...so much territory had already been broached I didn't have to ...still my Mom is one who puts the Fun in Fundamentalism in some respects. She's 90 this year after all.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Zipperhead7:

Ha ha Dean -- we had that record, and my dad was playing it one evening. "If your mother would listen to the lyrics she would have a fit," he laughed
  8:50pm Dean:

I mean, my 11yo daughter knows Cardi B lyrics by heart.

We (parents, Americans) can be such monumental hypocrites.

The Hair experience prompted my buddy (who saw the live show when he was 8) and I to investigate their dictionary entries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm zzz:

Bjork- there’s an artist i always absolutely love hearing but almost never play their music on my own. hey @Gary and all, been loving this mom reacts show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gary:

zzz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I guess you still don't put a stage full of nekkid persons on a Broadway stage too very often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but then I suppose there's much less reason to now...
  8:55pm Dean:

I can't wait to hear your mother's response to Björk. Because I know how I would respond if I were a mom.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Zipperhead7:

As Ms. Zip once said, "I love Bjork . . . she's such a space potato." This clip of her explaining the inner workings of her TV is classic: www.youtube.com...
  8:56pm Jill B.:

Bjork for the win!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'space potato' !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm doctorjazz:

Hi, I"m back!
As I noted earlier (since we're making mom comments), My mom (and dad), European immigrants, had no patience for my blaring Grateful Dead, Airplane, Beatles, Stones (though my mom had a soft spot for Tony Orlando and Dawn-Knock Three Time was on heavy rotation...). And I think she had a crush on Tom Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Gary:

Avatar 9:00pm still b/p:

doc, Did you find scallion pancakes at TJ! I can never get them at the local anymore...never never never anymore. I hurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

Still b/p!
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:01pm Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, that was the fastest Trader Joe's run I've ever heard of. Is it next door? My closest one is 40 minutes away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm doctorjazz:

Didn't see the scallion pancakes, still B/P, sorry (and my daughter requested the hummous snack packs, which they have, but were sold out).
  9:03pm Dean:

This is not how I would have responded. My maternal view of Björk's work is pointedly critical. I don't hear her as "art pop," but as an example of the excesses of New Wave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm doctorjazz:

@LG, there's a TJ in town, 5 minute drive from here, and had a short shopping list for Friday's dinner (left overs tomorrow, Sunday Sauce out of the freezer).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm doctorjazz:

This is such a cool show!

Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Zipperhead7:

This is great. A Vietnamese student said there's a TV talk show back home, sorta like "The View," that's called "I'm Not Coming Home Til It's Spicy"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Gary:

OMG, that is the best title I've ever heard
  9:10pm Jill B.:

Ziperhead.....WTF?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm zzz:

Well, there'll be no Japanese harsh noise, for instance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm zzz:

hey mom check out this new merzbow track
  9:12pm Dean:

Unsustainable Social Condition

My son jumped two feet when he first heard him.
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:14pm Listener Gregory:

I used to play Merzbow in my office from time to time, and colleagues would come in "to see if you're ok."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

You made mom laff, Gregory
  9:15pm Dean:

On reflection, my mom turned me on to Rachmaninov, Billie Holiday, Burt Bacharach, Tchaikovskii (the Christmas stuff), and, god bless her, Jonathan & Darlene Edwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Gary:

My mom turned me on to Richard Brautigan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm doctorjazz:

My mom turned me on to The Barry Sisters...
  9:17pm Dean:

Watermelon Pickle, sure. I'm probably closer in age to your mom than to you. Shoot, I bet I'm older than your mom by a stretch.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Zipperhead7:

I suspect Gỗ Lim doesn't put up with a lot of nonsense
  9:18pm Dean:

Zipperhead7, I gather you don't understand Vietnamese. The unifying theme of all of these songs is how she routinely puts up with nonsense.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Zipperhead7:

But she doesn't like it one bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm doctorjazz:

Love the Beefheart background!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm doctorjazz:

OK, a second artist whose work I own and know fairly well. Gary, what has *happened* to you??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm zzz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Gary:

Haha, well, the Cap'n's new to me -- I knew of him and had Bongo Fury but didn't have any of his albums back in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Gary:

She's clearly trying to figure out what's going on with the lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm doctorjazz:

Captain Beefleart is certainly a good one to use to try to get a rise out of mom (heck, my wife would run out of the room when I would play this).
Avatar 9:29pm still b/p:

She's gonna start a tribute band.
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:31pm Listener Gregory:

I wonder if early experience with Trout Mask Replica was a footstool to my later infatuation with free jazz.
Avatar 9:34pm tim abdellah:

I'm a latecomer to the Captain too. Finally got bit hard by the bug about 10 years back. Connected the dots for me between some of my 80s faves: Camper Van Beethoven, Robyn Hitchcock, and Tom Waits.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Zipperhead7:

Howlin' Wolf + Tristan Tzara = Capt. Beefheart
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:39pm Listener Gregory:

Captain Beefheart's lyrics can be funny and even silly, but often with a sharp point as well.
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:40pm Listener Gregory:

I like that Ms. Bodega refers to 50's pop singers as "be bop."
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Zipperhead7:

I remember hearing the Coldcut remix of this in a dance club and the crowd rippled back and forth like a field of wheat in the wind
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:48pm Listener Gregory:

Chuck D (I hope that's the right guy) really shouts and enunciates his lyrics, so you can actually understand them. Modern hip-hop often sounds like a foreign language to me, with the occasional word jumping out of the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Gary:

Chuck D = one of my favorite popular music voices of all time
