I read somewhere somebody saying that Spike was the Frank Zappa of the 40s and 50s. To a degree I agree.

Mr Fab:

Interesting comment. That’s true in the sense that they were both “maximalists” - throwing in everything but the kitchen sink. And both of their musics did seem to proceed at a fairly manic pace.
It’s still a funny comparison as they come from such different places: vaudeville, a realm of pure entertainment, as opposed to Zappa’s background in self-consciously high-art music (as well as rock n roll).

And I can't see a Zappa show being sponsored by Coca Cola...

Hi Mr Fab, Mr Turkenburg

Jan Turkenburg:

but I think Spike Jones liturally had a kitchen sink included in his cow-bell-car horn, etc-instrument at one point.

The conteast is jarring to me, one week Heywood; the next, Griffin. Love it.

Wasn’t familiar with Eddie Heywood, but def will investigate him further. Kind of an Errol Gardner type?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Seems so, yes.

I know him most from the band he led in early 40s, some of Billie Holiday earliest recordings was with his band.
