Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from July 19, 2022 Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I like this era of Devo, because they sound a little more like the Residents, and less like their future sound. I still love later Devo stuff, but this early stuff is just so weird and wonderful.
Avatar 10:16pm
Mr Fab:

i regret missing some classic bands, but at least i caught The Ramones a few times. Utterly exhilarating.

There was a Ramones exhibit at the Grammy Museum in LA a few years ago, and seeing their stage gear on display, like a stuffed and mounted dead thing, filled me with such unexpected sadness knowing that it would never be used again. As I stood there, staring forlornly at the speakers, amps, boxes, etc, it really hit home that I'll never see em again. i hadn't realized how much I miss Da Bruddahs.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

What Andrew Bunny said about Zappa, I said about The Ramones. "Oh, next time!" and then the last tour came and I couldn't go. Very poor planning on my part.

I'm not sure it was ever made clear anywhere, but Dantro is not human, and is not from Earth. (Slats, the sidekick, is human.) I think the writers of this arc sometimes forget that detail about Dantro, but regardless, it helps to know that Dantro isn't human. He's The Planet Man.

If I remember the story correctly, I think Los Punkrockers are singing these songs "phonetically," and don't actually know what they are saying. Which sort of explains how they don't really get the lyrics very close in a lot of spots.

no feelings a great song, a fave

I saw TMBG do a version of this with another song (a slow version, then a fast version stitched together after). So I decided to do my own version with their two versions of this song.

Ah, this is a good choice!! And a good version you've done!!

i'm Thankful i saw ramones and devo when i did. when freedom from choice came out i considered it the beginning of the end for them, in my world. the guts were gone and i just barely liked it, despite good lyrics. same thing when end of the century came out (except i despised that and considered ramones already over)
but i went to see them anyway and in both cases they were Fantastic! ramones played almost totally from their first 4 albums.

In recent years on Facebook, ZBS has been posting photos of life on their commune. It's pretty interesting. Kind of puts a face on their endeavors.

ZBS still make / release new stuff, too! You can support them very cheaply, and get access to their digital content.

That is, after you are current with your Sheena membership.

Love the cover art on this Servotron album.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Austin Rich:

At Servotron shows, the band would stay in character as evil robots who hated humans, and would insult the crowds between songs. It was half Andy Kaufman style comedy, of them insulting audiences for most of the show, then playing songs about hating humans. It was amazing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

The covers of all Servotron releases are worth googling and checking out. They were pretty inventive.

As a Cometbus reader, I'm a sucker for all his bands. I love the spirit of the songs, and the bands are usually better than your average pop-punk.

I know I've mentioned this before, but Hyped To Death records does not exist anymore, and a couple of house fires have wiped out all the material he used to make the comps. So if anyone out there was a nerd for the Hyped To Death Comps, I would love to try and get a complete set. Since they are out of print, I think trading make sense, right?

I just re-watched Escape From NY, and I find it very re-watchable. It holds up, 40 years later.

I play the hell out of this "Brain In A Box" comp, but in my defense: it has the most bang for your buck, when it comes to sci-fi songs and music.

If you're going back in time, coelacanthø, can I give you a shopping list? There's a few things I'd like to get that you just can't get now...

Brain in a Box is great. A friend of mine had it, and I ripped the whole thing. Luckily, because her copy got stolen.

I know I also play the HELL out of the Lux & Ivy Comps by Kogar The Swingin' Ape (who is also a WFMU DJ), but the Lux & Ivy comps are ESSENTIAL listening. And Kogar is just great, and the research he's doing on those comps is a massive undertaking, which he deserves awards for. And you can get them all from the WFMU Blog, I believe...
