Olivia, could you play something weird from Stranger Things? Some of the music for that is pretty far out. Binge watching it for second time in a row. My 18 year old thinks its weird for me to watch a teen romance/adventure but I remind him about Hop and Joyce. Plus, I get to reminice about the 80's when people used phonebooks. My 18 year old wouldn't watch it with his friend but I told him its a must -see!

Ohhhh... The passenger side mirror is shaped differently!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
mrdonutsu:

The mirror is not flat. It's curved to provide a wider field of view — like a wide-angle lens. Therefore, the object swithin it appear smaller, which our brains equate with being further away.
Avatar 🍝 5:07pm
Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

but the OG is and always was "objects in the mirror are closer than they appear"
Avatar 🍝 5:08pm
Jeff Moore:

No!

Car mirrors used to be just plain regular flat mirrors...

Then somebody got the clever idea to curve them to make them show a wider angle of view, which kind of makes sense (less of a blind spot), but the wider view results in negative magnification (smaller image than if you were just looking back with your eyes), which probably started making people mis-judge distances to things seen in the mirror.

So then the warning.

This transition happened during my lifetime, but it'll take some research to figure out when. My first guess is the 1970s, but I could be way off.
Avatar 🍝 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Jason from Houston:

That's crazy to me but the Internet says it's true.
  5:08pm

Oh I got it wrong. The Mandela effect is a debate about the phrasing of the warning "may be closer" vs "are closer"

“Objects In the Mirror. . .” There’s also a phrase widely used by the French theorist Jean Baudrillard. He uses that phrase when he is talking about simulation and the simulacrum. In One of his books, there is a prominent photo of an American siding near the same language and printed on it.

Jeff Moore:

"In 1982, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111 was amended to allow greater use of convex rearview mirrors on the passenger sides of cars and light trucks in the United States. The amendment also provided that when a convex mirror was used to fulfill the requirement for a passenger-side mirror it had to be marked with the warning, “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” That warning was based on a concern that convex mirrors might cause drivers to overestimate distances, a potentially dangerous direction in which to bias judgments (“Preamble,” 1982)."

That's when it became legal in the US. I think convex mirrors were in use in other countries starting earlier.

Thank you Olivia! Good job!

The essence of faithfulness lies first in holding correct opinions and attitudes regarding the Ultimate. Remember that the divine order is intelligent and fundamentally good. Life is not a series of random, meaningless episodes, but an ordered, elegant whole that follows ultimately comprehensible laws.
