I'm sure a lot of people who were rich enough to own radios didn't realize there was a wrong side of the tracks to be on... because on that side, you wouldn't hear about it on the radio.

This episode really lays it on the line: "I don't go against the law." Dan hasn't yet learned about #ACAB.

	🎸 ♥ 6:13pm Austin Rich: One hallmark of "hardboiled conversation" that seems to carry over in a lot of media is a sort of "homoerotic subtext" to so many interactions. There's a lot of, "Thanks lover," and, "don't treat me rough," kinds of conversation, that sort of speaks to the tension of beautiful, tough men all working together often. I'm sure there's a few papers in there that I could write.

	🎸 ♥ 6:21pm Austin Rich: If you like the dialog in this show, I love watching, "Millers Crossing," for that same reason. The dialog in that movie is sort of on the same level as other noir-type stories, and it's a great movie, too. But I mostly love listening to the way people talk in that movie.

	🎸 ♥ 6:24pm Austin Rich: I think most adults listening knew that was a joke. (Or, at least, untrue.)
	🎸 ♥ 6:27pm Austin Rich: In a way, detective / noir fiction is all based on the notion that the police are incompetent, and a real "hero" is needed to get to the bottom of things. Having police say lines like that can't be taken seriously, when Dan keeps saving the day.
	6:27pm Listener Robert: But it wouldn't surprise me if those involved in the making and airing of the show needed to score those points with the authorities. Like what came out a few decades ago about the consideration TV stations, networks, and producers received in trade for writing favorably about the government.

	🎸 ♥ 6:33pm Austin Rich: Certainly, anyone listening to this show on Christmas Eve in 1947 was probably expecting some holiday content from the radio. I suspect this idea (Christmas on Christmas Island) was in the works from very near the beginning.
	🎸 ♥ 6:35pm Austin Rich: Not the worst sound this week, but I did a little EQ to help reduce the background hiss and up the mids. It doesn't sound as good as other episodes, but it's certainly better that some of the others.

	🎸 ♥ 6:40pm Austin Rich: There was another character earlier that was sort of screaming, and it was unclear who that might be. So: still no new names of the other crew members. Yet.
	🎸 ♥ 6:45pm Austin Rich: We are in the end-run of our "Scarlet Queen" presentation. There's 10 more "proper" episodes, and then two "Pilot" recordings. (One, a different version of a story we've already heard, and another, with an imagined new version of the show, set in the late 50's. We'll run those after the primary episodes, and #37 will the the last time we'll get to enjoy Voyages on The Scarlet Queen.

That leaves four crew members "referenced" early on, but not directly referenced in the show anywhere so far. So our crew is, so far: Phil Carney - Captain Red Gallagher - First Mate Neilson - Crewmember Four - Cook. Five Six Seven. Eight.

Each episode is between three and five hours long, and there's over 100 episodes. Lots of amazing raw recordings of old radio broadcasts.

I thought about running click removal on the recording (I already did a fair amount of EQ and editing to help improve the sound for this one), but when I tried to do the click removal, it just mangled the sound badly. So a little noise comes with the territory.

I thought about running click removal on the recording (I already did a fair amount of EQ and editing to help improve the sound for this one), but when I tried to do the click removal, it just mangled the sound badly. So a little noise comes with the territory.
