@wmfromD A brilliant, hilarious question. Aristotle says half full, Plato says half empty, the Buddha says completely empty, and Laura Nyro says both, so let’s save the country.

PT:

Good Morning BB and all who travel with him! I thought the Billy Boy Arnold song was “Rockin’ It Is”, as in “You want rockin’? Then rockin’ it is!”, but it’s actually “Rockin’-itis”, as in the Rockin’ disease. I spend a whole lot of time thinking about this stuff.

MORNIN', BOB! I heard you say you were around 10 years old when the Shirelle's "Mama Said" hit the charts. I waa in 9th grade then and had just turned 14 a couple of months earlier. It was indeed a smash among all my classmates. One of the records our gym teachers would often play while teaching us how to "social dance." We loved Shirley and the girls!

BOB, you can play Aaron Copland all day long if you wish! He is one of the nonpareils of American music.
Avatar 12:25pm
Bob Brainen:

Hey Gerry from Miami! I would have been 8.
Shirelles were local favorites/heroes, from the city my whole family came from: Passaic, N.J.
  12:29pm
Gerry from Miami:

"Mama Said" was released in April 1961. It was their follow-up to "Dedicated to the One I Love."

Simple Gifts is a Shaker song, did I say Quaker?
  12:37pm
Gerry from Miami:

What I most liked about Copland was his insertion of hymns and folk songs into his pieces. Just like Charles Ives. And "Simple Gifts" is a Shaker hymn, not a Quaker one.
  12:38pm
Gerry from Miami:

Simultaneous realization, BOB! LOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
pgalub:

Also I think Ives uses that same hymn in his 4th symphony. Guess it got around!

Too bad the Shakers stopped shakin’ and died out.
Avatar 🥁 12:43pm

Upon second thought, the Shakers did keep shakin’. Their demise was due to the refusal to rattle and-or roll.

Avatar 🥁 12:54pm
(Mr) Bill:

Less distance between Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan than I perceived in my younger days.
  12:56pm
Gerry from Miami:

@pgalub. Ives used a lot of hymns in his 4th Symphony, but I don't think "Simple Gifts" was one of them. "Nearer, My God to
Thee" and "In the Sweet By and By" are quoted, though. I find Charles Ives to be one of the most fascinating figures in American music. He became rich through the insurance business, but devoted himself to following his artistic muse, composing some of the richest, most complex music in the catalog. Amazing!
  1:03pm
Gerry from Miami:

BOB, your second dip into the Ornette catalog today is an interesting one. Trying to "vocalize" his music is no simple matter! Kudos to Jocque and LeScott!
