One of their worst transgressions was the 1927 decision of Buck v. Bell.
This case decided that states were permitted to enforce compulsory sterilization of the unfit and undesirables. This included people with low IQs , the feeble-minded, women who were deemed sexually promiscuous, Jews, Italians, Catholics as well as others.
This case was born out of our Nation's embracing of Eugenics and our fear of the massive influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe
There was tremendous hate and fear of European immigrants from Eastern Europe but an actual welcoming of Europeans from Northern Europe (like Norway)who were seen as superior humans.
The Eugenics movement was born in England as an offshoot of Darwinism, with the belief being only the best and brightest should be allowed to have children.
When the movement came to America it exploded and was backed by many influential Americans including Teddy & Franklin Roosevelt, Nikola Tesla & Margaret Sanger & Oliver Wendell Holmes among many others. It was seen as a far less expensive way to keep the superior white race pure other than doing total segregation.
Just sterilize the undesirables so that they can't reproduce and send them on their way.
It is believed as many as 70,000 Americans were forcibly sterilized.
Eugenics only began to diminish in popularity because Nazi Germany became enthralled with the idea of Eugenics and took it even further to mass executions, death camps and of course The Holocaust.
At The Nuremberg Trials a oversimplified line of defense for the Nazi war criminals was "How can we be guilty of these crimes when your own Supreme Court (Oliver Wendell Holmes)said this is legal.
My long overstated point is that our Supreme Court has stood up for crimes against humanity before and please be aware, although it has been weakened, Buck v. Bell has NEVER officially been overturned by the Supreme Court.
Please research Buck v. Bell and decide for yourself how dangerous it is that it is still precedent and has never been overturned.
