Heh…trying to be of some service to the 99%, at least a little bit each day!

Hey Handy, I’ve got what I’m told by the kiddies today to be an IPod classic. Holds 160gig of tunes, had that circular spin thing to scroll and you press a button to make it play. It’s been a prized possession (almost my entire cd collection on it), and had thought to pass it on to my kid someday.

For months now the input jack to play it through a speaker has progressively gotten worse; from very staticky to only playing half-connected (which was pretty cool in a way, like listening to a 60’s mono album balanced to only one side), to where it now won’t play at all.

Know any good tech people locally who might be able to fix the input jack?

Aye, Stanley. And good at their job!

Hey, Zinn, hmmmm. Having recently had to fix a laptop, I had called a bunch of places. I think that Mikey's Hook-Up does not do service anymore, though you could call them and ask for a recommendation -- that's what I did, as I recall, which led me to where I ended up. I *just* threw away my page of notes yesterday (well, "page": it was a folded-up envelope). But there was a place in Manhattan that did Mac repairs, and they were very nice when I called. Ah, that was Rossmann Repair Group:

Rossmann Repair Group
141 W. 27th St
New York, NY 10001
(347) 552-2258

Let me see if that envelope is still in the recycling.

Oh, and there was a guy in LIC who was very nice when I called him. Hang on, let me see what I can find.

That said, the Mac Store people basically started laughing at K8 as she would bring in her Ipod Classic for repairs.

@Zinn, you've probably already tried this, but it's worth noting that degradation of sound and eventual stoppage can also result from lint and dirt accumulation. Cleaning the jack with a wooden toothpick (keep at it a while) has often solved problems for me.

Thanks Handy, and Morphe’!
Man, it’s amazing that NYC.gov and 311 combined haven’t a fraction of the wherewithal that Handy does as a compassionate and connected citizen of this crumbling city (my partner told me of a disconcerting report she recently read about, that specifically said there’s a stretch of the BQE that’s falling apart).

I’m gonna start making calls, thanks to you wonderful folks. So K8’s been down the road also of trying to salvage the classic IPod? Man, I really hope someone can repair the jack.
Was already thinking of Mikey’s. Was hoping to stay on the Island here, instead of having to ride the bike into Manhattan. But that just may be the case.

Zinn: Late addition to the iPod repair suggestions: spray a bit of DeOxit on the tip of the plug and insert, spin, and remove it from the jack a few times. This is a regular maintenance routine on guitar jacks that start to get static-y.

Zinn: Also, battery replacement on iPod Classic is pretty easy. I've done it on 3 or 4 of mine. Next time I have a battery die, I'm gonna go all out and swap out the hard drive for a SSD drive and really jack up the capacity.

Thanks everyone!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

@HH I hear you, but if it's just an iPod they most likely can fix it. And, you run that risk with any repair service alas. The last time I needed a screen fixed OTOH Verizon sent a guy from a service to my building--I met him downstairs and 20 minutes later I had new glass on my screen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
prof.fuzz:

DeOxit is a spray (sorta like WD40) that removes oxidation and rust from electrical components. Radio Shack used to carry it. A hardware store should have it.

Battery replacement is really easy. When you order a replacement battery, get the "kit" with it. The kit contains a couple of small tools to open the case of the iPod. The battery itself just plugs in. If I remember correctly, the first one I swapped took me about 10 minutes. Subsequent swaps were faster because I'd already figured out how to open the case. Even a drummer can do it!

Morning 3M, I only learned of it recently after hearing the sound it makes.

@Threemoons - Pickleball is super popular in Washington. It's basically wiffleball tennis played by hyper-competitive Type A personalities who are trying with all their might to pretend to be good sports. It's pretty silly.

I remember playing whiffle ball, using bats.

NO PICKLE

I assume these signs are still at MLB parks, though I guess they've had to take down the NO GAMBLING signs.

Thank you for a lot of really good music, loved your fill-in show today Lil Stranger.

Hubig: a pickle is a run-down drill but was also a drill where a batter would hit gounders at a bunch of fielders standing waaaaaay to close. Too many injuries, so MLB parks started putting up signs to ban it.

Great show, Lil Stranger! Many thanks.
