A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Yay, more monster songs! This 45 is one of the greatest things ever. The song on the other side, "Graveyard Rock," is just perfect lunacy.

Hey Austin, folks!

Mr Fab:

Yup, Tarantula Girl/Ghoul was a tv horror host! Don't know if there's any surviving footage of her surviving.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Austin Rich:

No footage that I know of, but there's some great photos and articles about her, that recount some good stories and behind the scenes stuff. But that record is really the cream of the crop. Still trying to find a real one that I can afford.
  9:09pm
Charles:

For some reason I want to see King Kong looking at tiny monkeys.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

There's gonna be at least one more "Monkey Madness" episode, so if I omit your favorite monkey / jungle song... there's still time!
Avatar 9:11pm
Mr. X:

Syd is my favorite acid casualty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Pauly from Clifton:

I would have loved to experience shows featuring the likes of Tarantula Girl/Ghoul or Ghoulardi, but as a kid, I just got reruns of the House of Frightenstein and later Elvira. Both are great, but not really homegrown.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
Austin Rich:

Elvira is pretty rad... and Svengoolie is still doing a pretty faithful old-school horror host thing. And I would say our very own Dr. Sarcofiguy is holding up the torch!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Austin Rich:

I'm a sucker for all the Syd stuff. But I'm not sure if he or Roky are my faves. I love both of their work a lot.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Austin Rich:

See! The Trashmen did other stuff, too! (And they're pretty good.)

But bird is still the word.

Everybody knows that the bird is the word!

Austin Rich:

I would say this volume of "Back From The Grave" has informed FAR too much of my taste over the years. And I'm okay with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Pauly from Clifton:

Austin, this "Back from the Grave" comp looks like a must have. And somewhat reasonably priced. My next discogs purchase.
Avatar 9:25pm
Mr Fab:

proto-ska!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Austin Rich:

Those Crypt Records reissues are well worth your time... and pretty cheap, compared to tracking down all the original songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Pauly from Clifton:

Oh and Dr Sarcofiguy is a National treasure.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

Have been reared on MST3K, Horror Host based TV seemed pretty normal to me. I would love to make my own someday. But there's plenty of radio to make in the meantime.

This beats the Credence version.

Lydia does have her way with covers.

And some men, if the stories are true.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm

(She tells stories like that, so I don't think I'm saying anything controversial.)
Avatar 9:31pm
Mr Fab:

for those of you who thought the Gun CLub's version of "Run Thru The Jungle" wasn't, well, "primitive" enough
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

Some of the mixes and transitions sound a little... rushed to me. I'm sure I'm the only one that's noticing. But still: I do enjoy this mix, and I think there's a few inspired choices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm

I heard that can open! Cheers all!!

I sort of thought you'd like that beer-opening opening to that tune. I forgot how much I love that Heartaches record!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm

I mean, the monster's a metaphor... but... this song just rules too much not to include it.

Any excuse to play My Dad Is Dead.

Also: an actual "flub" in the broadcast helps prove it's actually live! D'oh!

I'd have more to say to Jerry Lewis, but Joan or Arc would be a great hang, I bet.

Avatar 9:45pm
Mr. X:

Trying to think of a Bowie song about apes...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

In a lot of cases: the narrative connections are tenuous. I just mostly wanted to listen to a Gits song at this point.
  9:46pm
Heather:

I'm just grooving away tonight! You know better than most how bad I am at movies so I have no Kong refs!

Mr. X, same...... hmmmm.... TMBG has loads but Bowie? Hmmmm
  9:46pm
ramencity:

Moonape Daydream?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, I found like six TMBG songs that DIRECTLY reference monkeys in the title. (And others that mention apes / monkeys.) They were an easy choice.
  9:47pm
Heather:

@RamenCity ahhhhh love it!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

Again: I just love Mission of Burma. Mostly because ramencitykid would play it around the house all the time, and got me hooked.
  9:50pm
ramencity:

Maybe King Kong is what is on at the Drive In Saturday...
Avatar 9:50pm
Mr. X:

I rescind my last week's comment about Guided by Voices. Mission of Burma kicks way more ass.
Avatar 9:51pm
Mr Fab:

Hell yeah, I love Mission of Burma! I haven’t heard that one in ages.
  9:51pm
Heather:

Modern Airline has some very good B-Movie sci-fi type songs. Trying to think if they have any Kong specific... (I apparently think King Kong and I are good enough friends I can drop his title. Arrogant of me.)

Maybe King Kong WAS a piece of Teenage Wildlife?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Austin Rich:

I assume all those post-apocalyptic songs that Bowie writes are ape-taking-over-the-planet based apocalypses, but he just never got around to writing the songs that connected the 1984 stuff to the Planet of the Apes stuff.
  9:51pm
ramencity:

Oh, wait, I got it Heather: "Shhhh.... Apes of Things."
  9:53pm
Heather:

RamenCity I'm dying over here!!

Scary Monsters. Obviously he means Kong?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Austin Rich:

As the movie reveals, Kong is his real name. The title "King" is a show-business promotional name. But Kong never uses it. He's just "Kong" when you meet him. Super humble.

I tried to locate the studio recording I made of this band when they appeared on the radio in 2007, and I was the engineer. But I couldn't track down the file in time for the show, so I went with the album version. I think it still fits.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Austin Rich:

coelacanthø! Always a pleasure.
Avatar 10:05pm
Mr Fab:

Thanks for the tip on The Modern Airline, Heather. Looked for their music and found - well, whatdoyaknow - live on WFMU.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. X: there was a scene, last week, where a crew member discovered all the gear that the director brought along, implicating that the director knew they were in for trouble when they got to the island.
  10:07pm
Heather:

Mr Fab, Modern Airline is super cool! Features 2 members of 90s Rochester rock legend Dog's Life, too. I get so excited when I hear their music. They're just so good!
Avatar 10:08pm
Mr Fab:

This track…no way..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Austin Rich:

ramencitykid can speak to the period in my life where I just listened to Daniel Johston tapes over and over and over again for... well... years on end. So the fact I'm keeping it to one or two songs per show now is pretty impressive!

And sometimes I go weeks without playing him! Baby steps, they say...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Austin Rich:

I love a lot of Dub Narcotic stuff. But this is totally their best release.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm

Mr. Fab: have you not heard that Jad Fair / Daniel Johston album before? Seemed like it was always on college radio in the 90's.

Avatar 10:25pm
Mr. X:

More dinosaurs mixed in with apes?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Austin Rich:

That's why I had to play that song, Mr. X. It was too perfect.
Avatar 10:27pm
Mr. X:

I think there was an issue of Turok Son of Stone involving a Kong-like giant ape, among the usual assortment of dinosaurs.
Avatar 10:27pm
Mr Fab:

a great ape like Kong might be miffed to be lumped in with lowly simians like monkeys. As orangutans demand equal time!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

I tried to find some orangutans music. Might just have to play the theme song to that Clint Eastwood movie. (Weren't there two of those movies, actually?)
Avatar 10:29pm
Mr. X:

Everything the Coasters did was sheer genius.
Avatar 10:29pm
Mr Fab:

Otis, er, "Leland" played the Coasters earlier today. Keep the Coasters comin!

Didn't Serge Gainsbourg have a song called "Orang-utan"? Don't recall exactly...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. X: I think all the the "Big Ape and Dinosaurs" together stuff comes from King Kong. (Which, itself, was borrowing from the "Lost World" book by Arthur Conan Doyle.) So Doyle and Kong are most likely the reason people later just put big apes with dinosaurs.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Austin Rich:

There's always time for more Coasters.

I'll have to check on that Serge song. That might make the cut next week!
Avatar 10:32pm
Mr. X:

Ah, it all makes sense now. Gorillas, dinosaurs, Sherlock Holmes. Astute deduction, there Austin.
  10:32pm
Heather:

This is one of the ones I've been waiting to hear!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Austin Rich:

While specific to a different monkey, I think Kong has felt like this from time to time.
Avatar 10:34pm
Mr. X:

So Lux and Ivy of the Cramps compiled these? They have impeccable taste.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Austin Rich:

I remember - in the year 2000 - thinking to myself, "New Devo! And it's good?! We should be so lucky!" Little did I know that they would have another new album several years later... that was also great!
  10:36pm
Heather:

Mr. X, only chiming in to scream about enduring love and admiration for Ivy and Lux always and forever.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Austin Rich:

Those Lux & Ivy comps are compiled by Kogar The Swingin' Ape, who does a lot of uncovering of cool old rock and roll songs. (And, with the "Lux and Ivy" series, it's all songs that they have specifically mentioned in interviews, as being songs they like. Or songs they covered specifically.)

Ha! Maybe all of the interweb went down everywhere at the same time, so it wasn't an issue?
Avatar 10:49pm

Good info on that Lux & Ivy link. Thanks Austin. So they still get credit for having good taste. It's just that someone else put together the compilation.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

True! Yeah, Lux and Ivy sort of created modern rock and roll taste in a lot of ways. They were the first to do a lot of things that everyone takes for granted now.

I would only add, about that Lux & Ivy Christmas comp: assembled by Kogar!

And: assembled from a found photo, of an inset, of a mixtape that Lux actually made for a friend. Once Kogar saw the tape - with the track listing - he assembled that digital comp that's been floating around the internet.
