As promised last week, we will continue our documentary presentation about the life story of Alan Ladd during "Dimestore Revelations," later in hour two! For now, settle in for a couple stories from the Mid-Century of radio broadcasting!

Perhaps I have harped on this a bit, but here's another reminder: this episode was originally aired in December, six days before Christmas. This or the next episode would make sense to be the "holiday" episode of the show for 1948, but to my knowledge, there isn't a holiday episode, just evergreen stories. That's not surprising; an evergreen show has more function as a syndicated show. But holiday shows were also VERY common, and it wouldn't be odd to shoehorn one in.

If anyone can make a "holiday" connection for this episode, I'd be curious to see what you come up with.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Austin Rich:

Using a little bit of what we learned in the documentary about Alan Ladd last week, it is interesting to note how "clean cut" Dan Holiday is. For the most part, Dan has KNOWLEDGE of the underworld, but himself walks a pretty straight and narrow path. Aside from being able to turn a phrase pretty well, Dan doesn't really drink, doesn't really smoke, and seems to approach his writing with an almost 9 to 5 sort of attitude. He seems to know community members fairly well (even police officers), and people generally know who he is in public. (Like the kind of celebrity that Alan Ladd was.) While Dan talks more that Alan did, I suspect that Dan was supposed to be a little like Alan.

I was on tea and non-caffeinated beverages for at least three or four years. But the lure of real coffee is just too strong.
Avatar 6:15pm
Mr Fab:

and yet Ladd died at age 50 from booze and drugs. Guess he couldn't have been *that* clean-cut...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Austin Rich:

@spacebrother: what I like about lines like that is that is does sound like the kind of thing you would come up with on the fly, and then later revise to something better in your novel.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Austin Rich:

@Mr. Fab: you're spoiling the end of the documentary!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

But yes, Mr. Fab, you can't hide the truth, even if you make up a clean-cut character to sort of cover the person you are underneath. I think he liked the idea of being clean-cut in the show, and seemed to cover up his behavior in public... but those things always take a toll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Feldy:

Charles:

I love Jonesy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
Austin Rich:

I like this story, because the MacGuffin is actually seen and in the hands of the lead at the beginning, then looses it. Often in noir stories, the MacGuffin is missing at first, and then is recovered / found.

I love Jonesy, too. Thinking about doing a Jonesy supercut, someday.
  6:21pm
Charles:

All the regulars are great. Suzie, Cling..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm

Cling, while antagonistic, does seem to like Dan a little more than some police characters in old Radio Shows.

Still... #ACAB.

A subtle, but effective "radio version" of a "flashback," with Voice Over.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm

I also appreciate that we didn't have to listen to both the museum director and Dan tell that story. It works a little better when you just hear it the once.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

I know I've mentioned this before, but: I try to keep all the music I play for this show period for the era I'm re-playing the radio shows. So I don't got any later than the newest show, and usually, I tried to keep it to stuff that would be considered "hits" or "classics" in that period. Still, I fudge things now and then.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Austin Rich:

Not exactly the greatest sound this week for The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen. The originally recording was just garbage. While there are some digital artifacts periodically, as part of the clean-up, at least this version is much, MUCH more listenable.

Continuing to harp on the Holiday T-I-P, this episode aired the day before Halloween, 1947. Halloween was less celebrated on radio shows that Christmas was, so it's not exactly odd that this isn't a Halloween story... but the new characters do all seem to be wearing a lot of costumes and masks...

Charles:

Was this man the same announcer as the Box 13 one?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Austin Rich:

@Charles: Yeah. Alan Ladd is the star of Box 13. He started the radio production company with some of his movie earnings, to start a show of which he could be the lead.
  7:13pm
Charles:

No I meant that man promoting the movie just now. My english is failing me, sorry I can't explain more clearly.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Austin Rich:

Ahhhh! Yeah, in this documentary, Alan isn't interviewed. They do have clips of his films, and his son. But this is mostly just people remembering Alan Ladd.
  7:16pm
Listener Robert:

Ah, just as Nachum said, "Misremember the past, fabricate the present, fuck the future."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Austin Rich:

This story about his insecurity about his height sounds a little like the way Danzig insists on having raised sections of the stage, so when he's performing, he's the same height as the band. (Or taller.)
Avatar 7:18pm
Mr Fab:

the internet says he was 5'6"

Veronica Lake was several inches shorter.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm

5' 6" doesn't seem that short to me, but then again, people are insecure about a lot of things.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm

It's been so nice here in the Mid-Valley, I've been keeping the windows open in the Lava Lamp Lounge. I almost forgot to close them for the voice over!
Avatar 7:20pm
Mr Fab:

it's an inch shorter than Tom Cruise!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Austin Rich:

I wonder if Tom Cruise used that when he was coming up. "I'm an inch taller than Alan Ladd, and HE was a Star."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Austin Rich:

I can't remember how tall I am these days, but I think I"m more concerned with my waist, so maybe height doesn't seem so important to me.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Austin Rich:

For anyone who is keeping track: there are at least two more installments of the "Alan Ladd" documentary, before we'll be back to regular "Dimestore Revelations" installments. I might try to find similar material on some of the other radio stars on DRT, but for now, this is the only one I have plans to use.
Avatar 7:27pm
Mr Fab:

Creepy episode! Wonder why thou does speaketh in Middle English just because things get weird.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Austin Rich:

Good Question, @Mr. Fab. Maybe I should have a segment on Dimestore Revelations where we speculate on unanswered questions from our programs...
  7:28pm
Listener Robert:

From Penn Jillette I've learned another magician's use of the term "black arts": the camouflaging of operations against a black background -- black clothing, black drapes. Works a lot better than a white background, which I've tried.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Austin Rich:

There's a lot to learn from those two.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

Creepy, indeed! Not a holiday episode, but would have made a good Halloween story...

  7:36pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I recorded an audio file yesterday of a poem of Chris's yesterday, it's going to be our next Bast Awaking song, stay tuned! Oooh, the music would keep me away for sure

Ellen Lovebug:

And Thank you Austin, great to be here
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Austin Rich:

This particular episode shares a few qualities with some previous stories we've heard on "Dimnesion X." There is a sort of "house style" to the show, and a lot of stories sort of blend together in my mind. So I'm often surprised by the end of the stories.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm

Certainly the voice of the doll, and the song, and everything about the way the doll sounds, is endlessly creepy.
  7:38pm
Ellen Lovebug:

That laugh is horrifying
  7:38pm
Charles:

The Dimension X episodes with kids are something else. The one with the kids befriending alien invaders was the creepiest one for me to date.
  7:39pm
Charles:

To compensate for the Scarlet Queen, this episode is VERY halloween!
  7:40pm
Listener Robert:

Glad you're getting out again, Lovebug. I have a kind of agoraphobia when it comes to driving too; I get scared at speed on multi-lane highways, so I avoid them.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Austin Rich:

I'm really astonished that "scary dolls" still persists as a genre, as I have only met people who are horrified by scary dolls. There must be people who like scary dolls... but who are they?
  7:40pm
Ellen Lovebug:

That's rather unsettling
  7:40pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Nice analysis of Dan Halliday, Austin
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm
Austin Rich:

@Charles: I find a lot of sci-fi with children in them to be particularly scary. I think that was indicative of the authors of these stories: they were probably middle-aged fathers who were a little estranged from their children, and didn't know how to relate to them.
  7:41pm

Poor Blister. That's sad

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm

Wasn't there a detective dummy / doll episode, that sort of starts like this story, then the dummy switches sides and joins them? Maybe I'm mis-remembering that one.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

This, of course, is a uniquely "Dimension X" style turn. And I think this sort of happened on the Mechanicals episodes, too.
  7:48pm
Ellen Lovebug:

On Buffy there was a ventriloquist dummy named Sid that encased a demon hunter
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

That's the one. The first part of the episode, starts as if the doll is evil, and I think the first cliffhanger is Sid trying to kill Buffy. (Or one of the gang.) But after that, Sid joins the gang to help out.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm

I think they even refer to Sid as "Talking Tina" (a reference to the Twilight Zone episode).
