This song is about Richard Nixon's visit to Cairo in the summer of 1974!
  8:37pm Andrew:

It was remixed in this electro-rock version following the Egyptian Revolution in 2011!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm WR:

Dunno why I find this remix of Nixon Baba so charming. Mostly liking the vocal, which I would guess was same on the original. So would like to hear the original as well.

There is still opportunity for the Huage to Wheel Kissinger down to Central Park East and whisk him away to a fair trial….
Avatar 9:09pm TDK60:

Paul R: Kissinger lives here in NYC eh? I'd like to find his apt bldg., blare Victor Jara on a boombox outside. But maybe the good news out of Chile is enough to fluster...
  9:11pm headcleaner:

@simongandrew
  9:13pm headcleaner:

I'd like to see Kissinger deported to stand trial at that soccer stadium where Jara (and thousands of others) met their fate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm northguineahills:

indeed, headcleaner!
  9:15pm headcleaner:

Interesting that modern capitalism (and its effects of forced obsolescence) can be as successful at eradicating physical cultural memory as some of history's most notorious dictatorships -- if not more so
  9:16pm ?:

Kissinger is on Park Ave. near 52nd.
Avatar 9:20pm Listener Gregory:

I told a story on another show about how I had a wonderful cassette of early fusion of jazz and Indian music, which after I while I felt used some very strange scales. Eventually I realized that the tape was stretching each time I played it, and the notes got slightly flatter with each playing. That is the problem with cassettes.
  9:21pm headcleaner:

In principle that can all be digitally reconstructed (if we can get over our legitimate "ick" at things digital)

@TDK: Henry Kissinger has an apartment overlooking the park…

LBJ (in private) considered what Kissinger did in Vietnam on the eve of the 68’ election to be treason…Henry sabotaged the peace talks @Nixon’s behest

"Treason." Among the most over- and misused words of our time, right along with "terrorist."
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm PaulRobeson1922:

@Rev Rabbit: The 13 part documentary is Ok. It’s good to gain a surface level understanding of the American involvement in the Vietnam War… but burns does not cover Hué in enough detail and the tone of the film lacks moral clarity… the war was profoundly immoral from the start. Ken Burns does not take a strong moral stance in the film.

There is a perfumed river in Hué & a mass grave in the strawberry patch there. Why? Ken burns tells you how but has little to say about why why why
  9:37pm headcleaner:

Can you enlighten us, as you always do, PR22?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm PaulRobeson1922:

No
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@PaulR: We've had this convo before. I think Burns' task was to give exposition to the entire History & all events - & in so doing did not spare any Administration exposition of its self-deceptions or lies - broadly. I think it was quite clear & skillful in this.
  9:43pm headcleaner:

Moralization is overrated. Better to inform. And in appropriate contexts, indict. (Which seems to overlap with moralization, but is quite different)
Avatar 🇰🇷 9:44pm tim abdellah:

Google translates Duniya Gharura as "Arrogant World"
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm PaulRobeson1922:

@Rev Rabbit: yes we have.

Burn’s Civil war coversge is much better. Did you notice Burns connect Racism at home to racism abroad? He told a tale of the Vietnam War without a moral high ground.

He failed in his retelling of the war for this reason. The Vietnam war, everyday it went on, was profoundly immoral and the film does not stress this clearly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Gary:

Now you're hearing the B side

  9:47pm Andrew:

Thanks so much @Tim! I appreciate it.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I certainly didn't get the impression Burns was trying to paint it as anything but a vast mistake. Did he give enuff emphasis to war crimes & horrors in proportion to, say, military strategies ? Might be a valid question. His task here was of course immense & hugely freighted. Think I'm leaning towards headcleaner on this one maybe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gary:

So happy you were here for this one, Tim!
Avatar 9:48pm Listener Gregory:

Gary, what is the instrumental background to this song (Duniya Gharura)? Horns? Some kind of loop?
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in the current culture - sober exposition of Facts is a Statement in itself - strong medicine even...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gary:

Hey Kids! Stick around for Sam Segal's If You Lose Your Horse after this, starting at 10 PM sharp! Tonight's episode "With All of Their Eyes, Horses Behold Openness" happens right here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm PaulRobeson1922:

@Rev: a sober exposition on Nazism stresses the profoundly immoral nature of Murder of unpunished murder… Vietnam was Unpunished murder everyday… do u understand that?

One of the lessons born out of WWII is that it is our humanity that is capable of these acts… Nixon did not learn any lessons… hippies would critique Nixon as “a little fucking hitler”

As early as 1965 Mcnamara knew for certain* bombing would never work to “win” the war… the state dept. knew bombing would never work on an agricultural country… but the
Bombs fell for nearly 9 more years
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

PaulR - I suppose every War - or even preparing for War - is that. I think Vietnam being the festering sore in U.S.American politics, foreign ploicy & self-identity for decades - Burns probly saw the shortest line between two points of healing being exposition of factual History. I mean - I certainly learned from it. McNamara was neither spared nor misrepresented in this effort.
