A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Rich in Washington:

Not to blow your cover, B, but B here is another legendary KBOO late night DJ - and hugely influential on this here DJ, now doing his fantastic show on Saturdays at Noon Pacific on Freeform Portland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Rich in Washington:

I was in on that Estrada phone interview. I had no idea what he was up to. Such a bummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Mr Fab:

ultradamno: hey-oh! Good thing Estrada didn't meet Gary Glitter when touring the UK.

having said that, I do really like the exotic-rock n roll "Jungle Dreams," a kooky 45 he cut pre-Mothers.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm ultradamno:

He's on three Magic Band albums, two of them good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah Estrada will likely die in prison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Rich in Washington:

I feel like Zappa looked into the future and saw the modern conservative movement.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm ultradamno:

I'm not going to look for it, but there's a video interview with Mark Farner on Twitter where he brags about bringing Zappa around to loving guns.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm ultradamno:

I mean, I'd probably have fired guns at Burroughs or Thompson, because they're scary. But Mark Farner....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm dday:

I remember being 12 years old & ordering "Freak Out" from RCA Music club for $2.99. At that age I didn't get it and sold it to an older brother's friend for $3.00. We are still in touch & he still has the LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Rich in Washington:

Oh that's weird. Maybe having his home invaded and being nearly killed by a crazy person also had some bearing on that. And Lennon. Zappa fans are even crazier, having been a to a Zappa show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Rich in Washington:

ooo. Forgive me for this Ryko 80s version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm dday:

Farner's like Nugent..gun nuts & shitty guitarists

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Zipperhead7:

I took a first pressing of "Freak Out" to a record store when I needed cash. The clerk took one of the discs out of the sleeve, and as he eyed it a long skein of drool ran out of his mouth and puddled on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm dday:

abbazabba .01 Woohoo! I think I invested that profit in the "In A Gadda Da Vida" LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm dday:

Zipperhead7: ewwwww :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Mr Fab:

I've heard of people drooling over collectible records, but that's ridiculous..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Zipperhead7:

It was pretty gross. But he gave me $50 for it. I think it was around '78.

It took a while but I had to find a copy of disc two of Freakout because my copy's disc was hammered beyond playability. Protip: Search out a record and hit lowest price and you can often find a single disc, no cover, etc.

I just spent the last ten minutes trying to figure out where Edgard Varese is buried, so I could dig him up and present his body to the body of Frank Zappa, and every goddamned "find a grave" website is just jerking me around, so forget it. Sorry Frank
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Zipperhead7:

That's a shame, Irpnybread. Jeremy Bentham is a different story. He was stuffed, with a facsimile of his head on top. The real head is in a box under his seat and is not very well-preserved
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm dday:

ironybread: Died in NYC ..he was cremated..burial site (if he was in fact buried) is unknown. Might be on someone's mantlepiece

Thanks for the heads-up dday. I'm going to burn some incense and then decide that Edgard's ashes are the same as the ashes of this "Incense of the West" stick of Juniper. I mean, no one can contradict me, so why not

One Mothers record listening memory, after a long enhanced night, decided to relax listening to Weasels Ripped My Flesh. The second side ends with the title track, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, which is the band going free form and going into a drone. I noticed that the sun was well up in the sky, got up from bed and noticed that the record was finished and apparently the Mother's drone had cross faded to the ceiling fan which I had been listening to for nearly an hour.

My introduction to this album was in 1969 when a bunch of bikers who lived down the street had a four track in the panel truck to load in their dirt bikes to take down to Mexico to race in the dirt. It was the house on the street that anything went. We would sit on the front lawn with the doors open on the truck with this booming.

I had to make a hard choice the night this album was recorded at UCLA. The night before The Grateful Dead were at The Hollywood Palladium. I went for The Dead. I'm not sorry, The Grateful Dead were on fire that night. But sometimes I still wonder if I made the right decision.

Frank’s dad worked on those germ bombs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Rich in Washington:

Well, at least this performance was recorded for posterity. It's not like ANYONE ever recorded Dead shows (')(')
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Rich in Washington:

That's true, sufferwords. I think that's also why gas masks are a recurring motif with Zappa stuff.

Jack in the box had the funniest commercial i've ever seen (lat 90's, i think. will bore the chat at another time with that)
  10:15pm sufferwords:

Haven’t heard this in ages- the references though- for a corndog the SFV decades since I heard Tom Reddin’s name etc. - it’s so SoCal specific
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Rich in Washington:

I haven't heard this in years. Hope y'all don't mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Rich in Washington:

My uncle has a Studebaker Hawk. It's quite an impressive machine. He offered to let me take it for a spin around the block but I was chicken that something would happen to it - it's so beautifully restored.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

When Frank got tossed off the stage later that year and was recovering, the band continued without him. Gary Rowels who was the lead guitar player in Love took his place. I saw that version of the band twice. Once opening for The Allman Brothers at The Hollywood Bowl, and once opening for Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at The Santa Monica Civic. They were so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I was gonna say, Zappa was likely still in a wheelchair when this was recorded.
  10:26pm sufferwords:

I was gonna Zachary All you a few minutes ago but I didn’t wanna hex the show-

It was recorded about five months before he was attacked.

That Zappa was one of the least loved SNL guest hosts is legendary, but that killer x-mas tree sketch is one of the most memorable moments from the show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm spodiodi:

yeah, thanks, Rich. this is great. even Mz spodi had to chuckle
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Zipperhead7:

What was the beef with Zappa on SNL?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm ultradamno:

Up there with Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Lobsters Take New York for me.

@Zip Apparently he didn't put in a lot of work faroutmagazine.co.uk...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Franco Twinkie:

Of course every kid in L.A. could sing Eddie Are You Kidding? soon after the album came out. One day me and a friend went into Zachary All to find Eddie. He was all sweaty ironing a pair of pants in the back of the store. "Get out of here or you're going to get hurt!" is what he said to us. We ran out of the store shrieking with laughter.
Avatar 10:32pm ironybread:

Eventually we'll release a reissue of Firesign commercials that will include David Ossman's ad record for Hot Rats which includes this song and starts with the immortal voice-over "Ladies and gentlemen, the lovely Frank Zappa."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Franco Twinkie:

WPLJ is the only record my mom ever told me to take off the record player. That was the cleaned up version. On the dirty one, Roy Estrada is saying the filthiest stuff in Spanish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Rich in Washington:

@Franco: Oh wow. I had no idea.
@ironybread: can't wait to hear that!

Tis the season to be jelly! Love it! Back in the days of tape trading, i asked a guy to send me some Zappa. He sent me this and some other obscure bootleg stuff. Turned me into a much bigger Zappa fan than i had been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

No other rock band on the planet Earth sounded like this in 1967.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Rich in Washington:

no indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Rich in Washington:

Hi asheville jon!
I used to own a fair amount of Zappa boot cds and the Beat The Boot series but sadly only have a few now.

The one boot I no longer have is The Hot Rats at The Olympic Auditorium. Not that long ago I saw it at the flea market for $150.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Transylvania Boogie is one of my favorite Frank Zappa guitar solos. The outro is mind blowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Rich in Washington:

Yes, one of mine too. That and Willie The Pimp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm dday:

I have Watermelon in easter Hay playing alongside Transylvania Boogie..interesting mix
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Zipperhead7:

His tone here sounds very similar to John McLaughlin circa "Devotion"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Watermelon is gorgeous. Kind of dislike the whole Joe's Garage thing but there are some wonderful songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, Zipperhead7. Zappa's guitar sort of led me to McLaughlin in a roundabout way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm dday:

It's the song i play for people who say Zappa 's solos are just too full of notes. Hay is plaintive, expressive, deceptively simple & in 9/8 time (a fave of mine)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Franco Twinkie:

1974 I heard It Must Be a Camel off Hot Rats with the craziest sounding maniac plugging a movie at The Las Palmas Theater in Hollywood on the radio. Of course I went. It was the L.A. premier of Female Trouble by John Waters. Hardly anyone was there. I think Solomon was asleep in his mothers papoose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm dday:

Sorry 9/4 time (typo)
