Sadly, this tasty morsel of 1920s storefront confectionary is no longer with us. However, the Eglise de Dieu (née: Rialto Theatre) next door still seems to be in one piece - michaelminn.net...

Ike:

Don't fly into a violent, destructive rage that someone else trod on your intellectual territory, but Scott Williams also had a horse-related show title today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for the research, headcleaner. Can't tell from the picture...is there a theater in that space now, or does it seem abandoned?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Sam Segal:

Ike! I'm glad to hear Scott also appreciates equine poetics!
  10:13pm
headcleaner:

Yeah, I had to cheat and use on of the streetview mapping services. The (rather handsome) former Rialto Theatre (now a church, probably largely gutted inside, but with the façade basically intact) is to the left. Currently on the site is a modern glass box health center.

headcleaner:

Interestingly: the "same" van is parked in nearly the exact same spot in both that photo, and in the Hoolie street view I've been looking at just now. And I'd wager that's the same tree, too. ("Hoolie" is of course a stand-in for a certain search company we don't need to name).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
chresti:

Maybe the family van?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
WR:

Flatbush for some reason is a place / street name that I'd oft heard long before moving to New York.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
chresti:

3 is a triple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Sam Segal:

Hold the phone, headcleaner, you're telling me that van's been parked there for near on 40 years?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
chresti:

Hi Sam and wondering horses!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
chresti:

The tree must've grown a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Sam Segal:

WR! Maybe "Lords of Flatbush" put it on the map, so to speak.
  10:23pm
headcleaner:

I have this theory that cars/vehicles are really spirits, and can (on rare occasions) be found to reincarnate (or rematerialize) in certain special contexts. That you have almost no chance of noticing unless you happen to be walking by at a certain time, in a certain frame of mind. Perhaps they aren't really there at all (for other people), only for you. This may be one of those occasions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for wondering and wandering in, Chresti!

I spent a lot of time in that area of Flatbush years ago. After playing soccer in Prospect Park to my friends' house off of Courtelyou Rd, and have cookouts and listen to bands play (ladybug transister amongs others lived there).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
chresti:

I think animals and people are spirits too.
Avatar 🥁 10:25pm
northguineahills:

Also, on Tilden Ave there used to be a cheap bowling alley w/ $2 Red Stripes run by an elderly Jamaican couple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Sam Segal:

Oh man...cheap bowling alley with $2 Red Stripes...that'd be my home base if it were still there, NGH.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Sam Segal:

I love your vehicular reincarnation theory, headcleaner.
  10:28pm
headcleaner:

@ngh -- It's probably a shuffleboard / tikibar / pop-up kitchen joint now, reknown for its imported DJs and $16 cocktails, and packed on the weekends

i changed it already, sort of
...it's somebody's sculpture in one "color" (white -all colors; or none, depending on perspective) of a funnel that i defaced with gimp

you can call it a piece. it's a piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

Hey, I suppose it is a piece. Everything is a "piece" of something, after all.

I like these rando street photos you've featured on the show pages. Some kind of surveillance stills?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm

@DL, they were taken by the NYC Dept. of Finance for tax appraisal purposes in the 1980s. They've got one of every single building lot in the five boroughs.

I've seen some of the originals in person, when I worked at the NYC Dept of City Planning.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Some older ones include a guy holding up each lot number sign, the same guy in every photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Sam Segal:

Oh wow, that's amazing Kenzo. Are those the ones from the 40s? I haven't delved into that archive nearly as much as the ones from the 80s.

Did get to hear some great jazz last night, though, at Town Hall (Redman, Mehldau, McBride and Blade). And caught Wilco on Sunday night, nice live music week!

DL in LA:

These street photos remind me of something you might see in a contemporary art gallery, but here they are more refreshing, and easier to get lost in. And just seeing them one at a time helps too.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
doctorjazz:

Meet Irene Trudel and Peter leaving the show last night (I think she doesn't miss any shows in NYC)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
doctorjazz:

There's always room (you can run over, of course... 😉)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Sam Segal:

Hahaha true, Doc, but limitations are conducive to creativity...that's what I've heard anyway. Both those shows sound great, by the way. Was Wilco playing "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
doctorjazz:

(The only depressing thing about last night's show was that I always thought of those players as what used to be billed as "Young Lions"... They ain't so young any more. Then again, neither am I...
Guess my timing wasn't completely off...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Sam Segal:

The jazz was spread liberally throughout the second hour of the show this week.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
doctorjazz:

They're on their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot tour... They added a string quartet and 3 gotten players.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43pm

DL it reminds me of a building on Wilshire near MacArthur Park
Avatar 🥁 11:49pm
DL in LA:

@doctorjazz That’s quite a lineup (Redman, Mehldau, McBride and Blade)! Are they touring together or was it a one-off thing?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
doctorjazz:

@DL in LA, Redman announced it was the start of a tour (though I don't know details). Definitely recommend catching them if they're in your neck of the the woods.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55pm

(He was also ecstatic to be playing for a live audience, just kept talking about that. As were we in the audience)

@chresti I actually live not too far from Wilshire and MacArthur Park! I can see what you mean. Maybe that’s partly why this photo is grabbing me.
