My wife is a, um, noisy sleeper, so I normally sleep with earbuds in, tuned to noir radio streams. Hopefully I'm not conditioned to fall asleep...

G'day again Austin & Home Theatre Goers!

Ha! Yeah, that is the peril of the stuff we use to fall asleep.

Nice to see you in the chat, Scott67!

Since this show was originally broadcast / aired in the fall / winter, I'm sure a trip to an exotic location was just what people wanted to hear leading into the holiday season.

Carnation in a lapel? Alan obviously does not wear WFMU tee shirts everywhere like the rest of us

Thank you! You, too! You know the cliche about someone you'd listen to even if they were reading the phone book? True for me and Alan Ladd.

I missed the name of the city, too. I'll have to listen back, Mr. Fab.

Box 13: Triple Cross. A letter in Box 13 leads Dan Holiday to a Nevada casino where he wins $100,000 at a rigged roulette wheel. Trouble comes when the $100,000 is stolen and the man who rigged the game wants the money from Holiday. Original Air Date: March 24, 1948.

When I was a kid, I never had Ginger Ale. But in my early 20's, someone brought some to mix a drink with, and left a couple bottle of Ginger ale behind. I was curious, and I've been a fan ever since.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

I quit drinking for a long time, when I first learned how to drive, so I didn't get any DUIs. I would just drink Ginger Ale at shows, and give people rides home afterwards. It was a lot less expensive than drinking.

You could be right, Phillippe.
  6:20pm
Charles:

Wouldnt have worked as well here in Canada. Ever seen a picture of a moose ?
  6:20pm

I was usually the ride for everyone and their gear for shows, I was always designated driver since I generally am pretty straight edge

this is surprisingly gripping in a cheesy kinda way

I hope to hop on briefly tomorrow. I liked the brief musical interlude :) Perfidia means disloyalty
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm

This episode was in surprisingly good shape; many of the Scarlet Queen episodes have terrible audio. But this one did have a little here and there that I cleaned up. (Mostly tape hiss and some high-end squeal.

They are always in such trouble everywhere they go. And so rarely is Kang actually there when they are supposed to meet him...
  6:36pm
SW:

They put some effort in the dramatic music department
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. I do enjoy the music for The Scarlett Queen quite a bit.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

We are almost to the half-way point of the run of Scarlett Queen episodes. We'll probably run out around October. I intend to run some horror and then holiday shows for the end of the year, but we should probably start considering what to play next.

Mr. Fab has voted for some comedy. (I think you voted for some Marx Brothers or something?) Any other suggestions.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Austin Rich:

I think this is the first overt reference to actual pirate stories in this radio show, which makes sense. I'm sure that most sailors were familiar with Robert Louis Stevenson work.
Avatar 6:42pm
HyperDose:

Horror yes! :)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

Phil's resistance to the notion of marriage speaks to the homoerotic subtext of so much of this show. Red and and Phil often court the same girl, and then get drunk together afterwards. Phil seems interested in women, but can't commit to anyone by Red. I think the gay sailor / pirate trope is pretty well known now, and I don't think the author intended Phil to sound as queer as he does. But There's a lot of stories that seem to indicate that Phil is only temporarily interested in women, and more often wants to hang out with men.
Avatar 6:45pm
HyperDose:

I was not aware of the gay sailor/pirate trope. Interesting
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Austin Rich:

There's a new TV show that really embraces it: Our Flag Means Death. I guess most of the pirates in it are queer in some way.

SW:

Hammocks are good for snug cuddles
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm

I know Joshua Plague (of Behead The Prophet No Lord Shall Live) used to have a gay pirate zine in the 90's, with lost of ridiculous "gay pirate-isms."

Matt Berry makes it. It's hilarious
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm

Matt Berry is ridiculously good.

I enjoy his show, Snuff Box? I think it was one of the first he did after Garth Merengi's Darkplace.
Avatar 6:56pm

He played a grifting professor in an episode of Community. His improvisational skills are insane
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm

I think I heard that he was on Community. There's a lot of episodes of that show I haven't seen.

Avatar 7:02pm
Mr Fab:

Actually now I'm not sure if you should add some comedy, since there will be a new Sheena's show featuring vintage comedy. So maybe wait to hear what he's playing first...
  7:06pm
Charles:

Mr Fab, are the new shows coming in at the same time as the wfmu schedule change?
Avatar 7:08pm
Mr Fab:

no Charles, we roll them out at our own pace. First, we wait til the Marathon madness ends, then it just comes down to whenever Ken can add them. It's the one area that I have no control over. Ken is the Schedule-Meister.
  7:11pm
SW:

Well it's midnight for me so I better go to bed lol. This was a cool show to stumble upon. will have to tune in again.

"There are many tales told on the radio, but only one... Mid-Valley Mutations!" is an edit I've been meaning to make.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks Charles!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Austin Rich:

re: Future Shows To Air. Good point, Mr. Fab. I'll get a sense of where they are going with that show, and I'll maybe plan around that.
Avatar 7:30pm

Tomorrow's Mutation is going to be epic
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm

The sound on this episode is not great, as it was recorded by a fan at home. (Which will become apparent as you listen.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, I think people will enjoy tomorrow's show.
Avatar 7:33pm

You mean we're going to hear mom vacuuming, dog barking, etc? Sounds fun!

"Then, we take off for the moon." <dramatic music>

I love that transition.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Austin Rich:

We're in the "back 40" of this episode, as my grandmother used to say. Any other questions about this show as the story winds down?
  7:37pm
Charles:

Sorry for being crude but ... baloney!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Austin Rich:

"Baloney!" Isn't that Judge Judy's catch phrase?
Avatar 7:38pm
Mr Fab:

I have the movie soundtrack to "Destination Moon" but pretty sure this is different music. ALL versions need to use the Dinah Washington song "Destination Moon."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Austin Rich:

Leith Stevens? That soundtrack is supposed to be pretty good.
Avatar 7:40pm
Mr Fab:

that's the one!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Austin Rich:

I think all the "Dimension X" music is the same for every episode. Which sort of limits the range of emotions they can express via the music, but they do okay, I guess.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

More "Dimension X" style drunk jokes. Pretty common on this show.
  7:42pm
Charles:

What's the radio theater show with the most episodes? Would it be Doctor Who or something like that?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Austin Rich:

Hmmmmm. Good Question. I'm not sure Dr. Who started running continuously until recently. (I could be wrong, but I think the TV show has the most episodes of a TV show. I'm not sure what radio show holds that record.)
Avatar 7:44pm
Mr Fab:

why DOES buttermilk exist?!
  7:45pm
Charles:

That's space milk alright.
Avatar 7:47pm
HyperDose:

I figure that's the vibe you're curating with Dimestore Radio, Austin. Gather the family around the radio for dinner and a story.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

"daily weekday episodes since 1951. a total of over 18,950 as of June 2019. The Archers, "An everyday story of country folk," is the longest running radio soap opera on radio."
  7:49pm
Charles:

That's a lot of episodes. You'd be set for life having this on Dimestore.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Austin Rich:

The Archers is more of a soap, as I understand. (Never listened.) But if I run out of content... and I live forever... then yeah, I'll probably need to think about airing it.
  7:50pm
Charles:

The planet Moon?
