Not sure if you got your question answered from the end of a show yesterday, but: Marathon. The best time of the year! It's FMU's big fund-raising push where they try to raise pretty much the entire year's budget in two weeks. Every show has a second DJ come in as an MC to handle announcing pledges from listeners. There are giveaways for people who pledge during shows, special awesome specials, and massive amounts of fun and WFMU community. In prepandamnit times, listeners would go in to volunteer to answer the phones and take pledges. What that will be like this year is unknown. "But it's a wonderful time of year. "PLUS. For various pledge levels, you get SWAG. The DJs put out premiums, which can be anything mailable -- CDs, t-shirts, books, other stuff -- and the station usually has two or three special T-shirts available for various pledge levels. It's why many of us have such limited wardrobes -- all WFMU T-shirts!" Oh, and I promise you the SWAG ships to the Netherlands. Marathon! The only holiday it's still OK to be excited about!* *(And associated Hellraiser and SWAGVENT holidays.) Happy birthday, Monica! Hey, prof.fuzz!

	♥ 4:47pm mariano: Handy: Comus is the original krewe, and the Comus ball is still the highlight of the season for the local bluebloods (the joke is that if your family made its money after 1812, you're nouveau riche). They quit parading in '90 or '91 to protest a city desegregation ordinance that would've required krewes to publish their membership rosters. Even when the ordinance was eventually struck down by the SCOTUS, they still decided not to parade. The whole story is really interesting and detailed in a book called The Lords of Misrule, which is also a short history of the racial politics of Carnival in general. www.upress.state.ms.us...

It's FMU's big fund-raising push where they try to raise pretty much the entire year's budget in two weeks. Every show has a second DJ come in as an MC to handle announcing pledges from listeners. There are giveaways for people who pledge during shows, special awesome specials, and massive amounts of fun and WFMU community. In prepandamnit times, listeners would go in to volunteer to answer the phones and take pledges. What that will be like this year is unknown. "But it's a wonderful time of year. "PLUS. For various pledge levels, you get SWAG. The DJs put out premiums, which can be anything mailable -- CDs, t-shirts, books, other stuff -- and the station usually has two or three special T-shirts available for various pledge levels. It's why many of us have such limited wardrobes -- all WFMU T-shirts!" Oh, and I promise you the SWAG ships to the Netherlands. Marathon! They quit parading in '90 or '91 to protest a city desegregation ordinance that would've required krewes to publish their membership rosters. Even when the ordinance was eventually struck down by the SCOTUS, they still decided not to parade. The whole story is really interesting and detailed in a book called The Lords of Misrule, which is also a short history of the racial politics of Carnival in general. www.upress.state.ms.us...
