So a bunch of young musicians are sitting around trying to come up with a band name, someone suggests "Mud." Yes, Mud. Brown, dirty, ugly stuff. Everyone nods their head and says, yeah, great name. And their manager, record company, et al are all on board with it. Okay...guess that's how things worked in those days.

ABBA's "SOS" had the "When you're gone/how can i even try/to go on" part which sounds very similar to that "Morning Bird." And "SOS" came out a year after "Morning Bird." Hmm...

They used to play Alvin Stardust perpetually on BBC Radio in the UK in the 70s. I have not heard "My Coo Ca Choo" in over 40 years until now - but I still know it by heart!

Sad about the Whiskey. They long ago went "pay-to-play" which is exactly what it sounds like. instead of a hip booker looking to book the best acts they can find, it's just: wanna play the Whisky? Give us $800 (or whatever), sell the tickets to your friends and family, and you get to say Hey, I played the legendary Whiskey a GoGo! I've been there like once in the last 30 years. Let's make red hats that say Make the Whiskey Cool Again.
Avatar 4:37pm
Mr Fab:

ha, that Cozy Powell was pretty much Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun" with drum solos. But that's ok, still pretty cool!
Avatar 4:38pm
Dolor-X:

Like a tourist souvenir, ugh. I touched the walls of the Whiskey and carved my name on a table or something.
Avatar 4:40pm
Debbie Davenport:

Yuck Mr. Fab. I hate hearing about the shitty stuff that happens to bands. It's not like it's a career that pays off in the long run. For most anyway. Yet they still share their art with us all. I sure appreciate the bands.

The Whisky is terrible. I was in a garage band in the 1980s when that pay to play thing was all the rage there. Whatever your opinion is/was on, hair bands, this created a market where only the upper class or truly tenacious groups could get an audience. The Whisky also had a terribly habit of forcing groups to make their workers load band equipment as if they were teamsters and it was Union rules. Then they charged $300 for lugging your amp 100 feet.

Becky Ebenkamp:

Yay, Kitten! I’. Playing that Teens song manana ; )
Avatar 4:53pm
Debbie Davenport:

Wow! Wow to all of it. I also didn't know it was happening in the 80's. I thought it was a 2000s thing. The shit people go through! Geez!
Avatar 4:56pm
Debbie Davenport:

but I hope Kitten Sparkles has a super time and a great turn out. None of this fucked stuff for him tonight!

Becky Ebenkamp:

Sort of related: These two dudes did the ultimate book on the Whisky (according to them) maybe 10 years ago and were on a panel with Domenic. It was getting some attention. So we took a look and it had photos of “classic” psychedelic posters from the 1960s—that our friend Dennis made post-2000 as art pieces. They advertise shows that don’t even e it’s in some cases.

Anyway, on the panel they are raving about the Whiskey and don’t know about pay to play. They are from Seattle and interviewed Mario and Elmer for the book. Total PR puff piece. Before those guys opened the club, they were grave robbers in Chicago.

Wow! Good thing Dominic was there.

OMG the show is over. Thanks for being there for us Don. Hope you have a great time tonight!!!

Did Dominic them straight?

I was reading some Cher biographies recently after Ronnie Spector died hoping to get some info about Phil S and that whole scene. I found a number of mistakes just casually flipping through these books.
