Morning, Michael, Baby, and all the Shelle Gamers! Gonna go make snow brunch but radios are on. FM sounding great in Brooklyn with the signal bouncing off snow and clouds!

Double-est D That first set of your latest show was Hall of Fame Radio. I can’t stop listening to it.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 11:06am McGroovey:

Signal is great in North Bergen, except that when I sit down in one chair where I like to sit, it fuzzies up the radio.

Making waffles, waiting for the waffle iron to heat up. Teenagers are waiting patiently impatiently in their rooms for me to announce that it's time to come and consume.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 11:07am Squints:

This might sound stupid but could that ELO track (or any ELO track of that era, really) not be rearranged just as fully for Strats and Teles and make fantastic Ventures records?
  11:08am clarke:

move that chair, McG!!
  11:09am clarke:

i learned long ago - never force a drive!! there's always a way to wait.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 11:09am Squints:

My only knock on A New World Record is that production is a little too... blended enough. A bit more separation, maybe, and make the sound really pop. Wouldn't change a single actual note or part.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 11:10am Pedro in Arlington:

Bummed that Marty Stuart got postponed in DC on Thursday. No indication as to why. What say you, No. 1 dj?
  11:10am clarke:

agreed Squints - at the time New World Record came out, i was anti-disco - that stance has eased (a bit) these days, and this record stands up.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 11:11am Squints:

Signal fine as always fine over the interweb tubes.

Power, however, has exhibited quantum behavior.

The idea of CSG was to prevent center panned stuff from building up and swamping side panned stuff. Without it center panned stuff would sound 3dB louder than side panned material when played in mono. However, the cure was worse then the symptom.

Love Los Lobos. During the time I was regularly buying vinyl, usually from J&R Music in lower Manhattan, I remember buying "Will The Wolf Survive." I finally got around to buying the CD and was then able to listen to an unblemished copy of the album. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

No doubt, flatwounds were the standard until the later 60's. But consider how many sessions Osborn was playing on a weekly basis, and the fact he never changed his strings yet was never off in the intonation up the neck is pretty amazing. Hot damn.
  12:34pm gf2002:

I've had people ask how to get that 60's LA electric bass sound, and I always say get a Fender bass, use a pick, and play through a Fender guitar amp or Fender amp simulation. And use flatwound strings. It was a pretty basic setup but the players knew what the **** they were doing to get those sounds on tape
  12:34pm P-90:

I think (not sure) McCartney is using roundwounds on his Ricky by the time of “Sgt Pepper” (prominently on things like “With a Little Help…”’ and “Lucy in the Sky” etc.)
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Frank In Queens:

The flatwounds make a world of difference.

  12:35pm clarke:

what guitar amp do you suggest??
  12:35pm gf2002:

@clarke Almost all those LA studio guys were heavy smokers

I order from Happy Mug online shipped coffee means to my house. They also do ground AND decaf FYI. Great stuff.
  12:36pm clarke:

speaking as a non-smoking drummer - you have to huff and puff other people's fumes.

David Bowie's "Sound and Vision" always makes my ears think of Nick Lowe's "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" - even though they're not really that similar sounding. maybe it's the rhythm track I don't know

Carl Smith whose 2nd wife was the GREAT Goldie Hill
  12:38pm annette:

@kotz. nothing like half decaf w spices.
  12:39pm gf2002:

@clarke For original Fender amps, I'd say a Super Reverb like Kaye used. But make sure it's modified first so you don't blow it out like I did to my '67 Bandmaster head when I put my Jazz bass through it lol. For simulations and modeling amps/software, anything that says "Black Panel" or "Twin" usually does the job. It's all about the voicing and the EQ, and I've found as soon as you run a Fender bass through a 60's Fender emulation in that software, it gets close. But the pick is essential to really nail it.

I love the listeners, but I have all these cinnamon rolls to eat and a crackling fire to sit in front of out here in snowy St George...

clarke, I was trying to find for you the Bloom County strip where Opus is caught between a chain-smoking Steve Dallas and a chain-pastrami-burping Portnoy, but the internet is letting me down. Take the effort as genuine sympathy, though!

  12:45pm gf2002:

My Bandmaster and Jazz Bass sounded amazing for a few minutes...that classic tone you always search for...then literally it just shut down as I was playing. Cost a bunch to repair it, and then I was informed you have to do a few mods if you want to run a bass through an old Fender tube guitar amp lol. Costly lesson.

How about that recipe for the dessert you brought to Don and Margaret's house? THAT was a #1 hit!
  12:52pm P-90:

I only have one bass, a 1969 Rickenbacker. Always roundwounds, played with a pick. You could argue that the. Rickenbacker and the Fender bass are two different instruments, rather than two versions of the same one…
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Handy Haversack:

Rex, do you have the ingredients for several rounds of ICE STATION REINDEERS?
  12:52pm Christina Ginger:

Super easy to veganize if you use JUST egg, or a flax egg, as the flax would get hidden in the texture of the cake. For the topping, there’s no reason why you couldn’t use a good dairy free milk with lemon juice and the rest. Or make a thinned out homemade almond/cashew cream… does that cake really need 3 cups of sugar, though?
Avatar 12:52pm Michael Shelley:

Robin - cheap shot - if you know Coco (and I do for 30 years) you would know that she's a great cook - and Rex, not so much
  12:52pm P-90:

And I haven’t baked a Bundt in years, so what do I know?
  12:53pm paul:

If the Doors were founded in 1957, they would have sounded like the Embers.
  12:53pm gf2002:

@P-90, totally agree. The Rickenbacker is and always has been its own thing, nothing else sounds like a Rick bass.

  12:58pm P-90:

@gf2002: I realized a long time ago that you could do a band with a bassist playing a Fender, even a five or six-string variation, and another bassist playing the Ricky, with a pick and playing up high on the neck a lot, almost in baritone guitar territory.
