Avatar 9:58am Joe McG:

I'll give the movie a try eventually, but it's been some time since I thought a WA film had more than great style (they always have great style). "Moonrise Kingdom" had some heart.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:02am The Oscar:

@Miss G Not sure if you're talking about the political aspect (which I'm not sure I'm well-versed in enough to comment on), but tonally I thought it was one of his most well-balanced-- I feel like a lot of his post-Tenenbaums stuff doesn't quite blend the whimsy and melancholy, but this one felt much more natural to me.
  10:02am P-90:

agree:”Moonrise” is a standout, that one hit a real sweet spot for a WA joint
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:03am Hughie Considine:

Seems like Wes Anderson gets dunked on almost as frequently as Steely Dan and the Eagles. My family loves Mr. Fox, but Dispatch really needed a through line.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:04am Miss G:

The Oscar, I watched it in segments and not in the theater, so my feeling a bit sour about representations of police and student activists, maybe it was circumstantial. I love the old New Yorker and I loved the Benicio del Toro and Lea Seydoux sequence.
  10:04am Dayffid:

Personally I lost interest after the Darjeeling Limited.
Avatar 10:05am Joe McG:

"Fox" is great, and I liked "Bottle Rocket" and "Rushmore," too. Somewhere around "Life Aquatic" the ship began to take on water.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08am Handy Haversack:

I am pretty neutral on all except Rushmore, which I love, and Life Aquatic, which I actively and passionately loathe.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08am Webhamster Henry:

I like Wes Anderson - his movies are definitely Wes Anderson movies, look great and the ensemble cast is always fun. Watching Jason Schwartzman grow up is like watching Jean-Pierre Léaud.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:09am Brian in UK:

The Long Engagement was released around the same time as Life Aquatic. A wonderful film. Never thought a leg iron could be sexy until I saw Audrey Tatou wearing one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am melinda:

@Handy I thought Life Aquatic was pretty great. Why the loathing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am melinda:

Plus one for Rushmore. Most grounded of the bunch. Tennenbaums was indulgent infatuation with its young stars. Life Aquatic best for achieving his overarching vision. His stop motion films are also at the top, great fun.

Good day all. Happy birthday Joe. Big snow day here in Dundas, ON. Gonna wait till it stops before I start shovelling. Great day for a cozy movie inside. I am a fan of Wes Anderson but the film I can't stop thinking about is Titane. It's got to rank with one of the weirdest, most violent love stories I've seen. If you're a Cronenberg fan, as I am, you might really dig it. Not for the squeamish however. Titane won the grand prix at Cannes this past year and is directed by Julia Ducournau, the second woman to win the grand prize since Jane Campion's The Piano. The trailer itself is pretty exciting.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:58am Webhamster Henry:

@minkwest: I'm a bit scared of "Titane"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am minkwest:

It's so good Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Titane looks like a couple of hours of garbage. But then again, I don't think I'm in the target audience, whatever the heck that even is.
  11:03am Andres:

Hey, minkwest. 15cm here in Guelph. Bracing myself with music and coffee before I face the shovelling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am minkwest:

Hey Andres. Me too, coffee, banana bread and WFMU. I haven't measured but it's a lot of snow and it's still coming down. Cool, you're a fellow Canadian. Are you also a regular listener to Marty's show on Sat. night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am PaulRobeson1920:

Mark tellin it like it is!!!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:07am Miss G:

*yikes* Mark Hurst I might not be awake. ..left my garmento job when I learned that the men's khaki pants we were producing in China were made by prisoners. Just was not worth that.

Great spin, Joe, and good call, PR1920!

While that song played, I finished reading another tale of of revolution and justice seeking: The Broken Earth trilogy by N. K. Jemisin. Definitely worth finding and reading!
Avatar 11:18am Joe McG:

@Paul/Handy: Nice recommendations, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I can't decide if I should move forward with Google cloud certification or just say screw it, purchase a metal detector, and go look for old Zippo lighters down at the beach.
  11:18am Andres:

MLK Jr Day weekend sees a huge number of US visitors from the Detroit area travelling to Collingwood (ski town 2hrs north of Toronto). Sadly they weren't up this year or last. Looking forward to better times.
  11:21am ?:

Do you ever link to Independent record stores when you click on the album picture? Or just Amazon?
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

?: I'm afraid I'm in the dark on this one. Do you see album covers on the app? I've never used it. (I'm too lazy to put album covers on my playlist!)
Avatar 11:24am Joe B:

yeah, I don't see any album covers ...
  11:25am ?:

The covers appear in the pop-up player courtesy of radiorethink.com.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I like Herbie Mann when he leaves his shirt on.
Avatar 11:26am Joe B:

I remember seeing herbie mann perform on Wonderama. thankfully it wasn't for that album where he has his shirt off
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@?: Ah, good to know. I'd have to ask around, I don't actually know much about how that works. Thanks for the heads up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am chresti:

As long as the date is there, I'm happy.
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@Joe B: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 11:26am Joe B:

@? - i guess you'd have to contact radiothink.com, don't believe that is in our control
Avatar 11:27am Joe B:

@? but I am not 100% sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Joe B: Back when I was on facebook, I was in a jazz album covers group and they'd scold you to the point of banishment if you posted a pic of 'that' album. Ha!
  11:28am listener monica:

a musical conversation!
Avatar 11:28am Joe B:

@woods - ha! we are both scarred by that LP cover!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:28am pgalub:

Wow. Herbie really has a lot to say about his girl.
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

I know what you're all thinking: "I SO needed 18 minutes of Herbie Mann playing "My Girl" this morning. THANK YOU!" You're welcome!
Avatar 11:28am Joe B:

he was promoting hijack on wonderama so I guess it was soon after this album that Joe is playing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

The thing is, I kind of remember it being not a bad album...or maybe I'm thinking of Memphis Underground.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:29am Miss G:

Who can I sue for the trauma of looking at that Herbie Mann cover?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am chresti:

radioo rethink sometimes shows a different artist/cover if whats playing isn't in the database
